This channel has always been philosophical, making you really think about the issues in any given video but this is next level. The amount of time and research that must have gone into this video alone blows my mind.
I belive we have two diffrent kinds of politics in video games. Politics as a theme And politics as a message Themes are great and allow for really interesting settings, situations, and setups. Messages are just a current agenda and in time will age quite poorly. You can have both of these things, but generally speaking. You dont want a message, you just want a theme. So the player can decide how they feel about a thing. It's the same reason why you start to hate a lot of kiddy shows when you grow up. You dont want to be told how you should feel about a thing, you want to understand it and come to your own conclusion about it. Skyrim is politics as a theme, it dosnt tell you that you're wrong for choosing one side like the stormcloaks. The empire just hates you're guys for it, and the same thing happens if you choose the other side. There's not message in there saying that officially you made the wrong choice because X is actually the bad guy here. That is the way things should be in games, let the player decide what's wrong or right. They will be much more invested in a choice THEY made rather then the one "you" made. So TL;DR: When it's said to get politics out of games it (should) mean to get political messages out of games. Not themes.

I disagree, bioshock is a critique on ayrn rand's philosophy. It has a clear message, I think that a message can work, but you actually have to understand what your talking about.

Maybe I was just present in a particular bubble of Twitter at the time, but the talk I'd see of "keeping politics out of video games" seemed to revolve around tacky political pandering on contemporary topics rather than the presence of any political themes. At least, that's how me and the boys felt and still feel today. I appreciate the sentiment being expressed here, but I don't think it actually addresses the complaints people were having.

Just hearing your opinions on certain things and having them mirrored with my own provides a really solid ideological grounding point that I havent found in many other platforms. There is a difference between having a game that has politics in it, like The Witcher 2, that deals with political implications of the assassination of a king, and having games that shill current mainstream politically loaded political messages. The dislike that some have of having politics in videogames is the latter. Nobody wants "the message" or any type of propaganda shoved down their throats, especially since it is already something that we deal on a daily basis and don't need it in our escapism from reality or funtime moments.
I always look forward to your videos each time you upload also politics invading the video games has been such a debbie downer lately ruining communities not letting us express ourselves not as effective we wish to but as a whole we can push back against the government with civil disobedience, furthermore I do say having conversations involving politics is good because it gets the important stuff to circulate ideas and mindsets to part take in arguments with intuitive routes on how to confront matters such as we face nowadays within games and their communities I wish to go more into what I think about but this is all I have thank you for this well articulated and philosophical video.

I think for a piece to be political art, the primary focus should be the discussion, critiquing, and (idealy) possible solutions to the systems that or may not be controling us. New Vegas, Wolfenstein fit this. I don't view Overwatch as political, the politics are extremely inconsequential to the game itself. It doesn't matter who you're fighting against in canon, everyone on the opposing team is your enemy, terrorist, heroes, yourself. A political work HAS to say someting, not just have political elements in supplementary materials. If I understand the video correctly, then Overwatch can be considered Queer art cuz there are characters who are gay/bi/etc. and some of the people working on it are queer or even simply have opinions on queerness. When we go with this criteria, then everyting can become anything. Consider Corey in the House. Corey lives in the white house and hangs with the president, but its not a political show. The show isn't about the president and what he's doing to the country or what he feels about his position. Its about Corey going to school, playing in a band. Borderlands 3 post game it’s pretty good, didn’t like the story except the Atlas vs Maliwan and Bandit that was good. I love and hate overwatch and I still playing this game. It really lacks is updates and hero’s balancing. Finally they have hero ban that’s a big step so I’m fine as is as long both games I play keep updating it will be fine. My notifications just pop up that you make a video about Video games and politics. That is well thought and I didn’t see that till you tell me your insight what was going on. Its not about politics in gaming, its the narrative that some games like overwatch try to funnel feed you. Forcing you to ‘Be acceptive or else’ when ironically that same message is removed from the Chinese copy of the game for their sweet hard earned yen. The reason why it didn't bother people till recently is because it wasn't attempted indoctrination like it is with Overwatch. Lets give an example. You just destroyed your for honor disc because you didn't like it. Well imagine doing the same thing and being called a sexist bigot racist masaganist ableist homophobe, because that is the exact thing you are labeled as for disliking overwatch. People don't like the idea of having to be forced to listen to a narrative they don't associate with. We get these games to escape from reality, not to be reminded that we are human scum because game developers think that ‘gay’ is a character trait rather something that people on a day to day basis struggle with, and have openly admitted that these characters dont represent them and is more of a characature then a true blue representation. Its things like this that get on peoples nerves. The pandering, the wishy washy way they cover up said pandering in the Chinese version, and of course the blatant dislike of straight white men. But hey, whatever makes you that extra cent right?
