    As a patreon of this channel, I am happy to go to sleep knowing I have helped to bring your knowledge and insight to others. I continue to support you because I am learning too, and bring what I learn to my bike and funnily to my cars also.

      Hi Martha, thank you for that reassurance... we seriously rely on the Patronage to keep us going, doing videos of this level is costly, in equipment, time and materials... so we always strive, hopefully, to deliver a value for money return for those special people like you that stand by us - thank you, D&Px

    hi del I've been a fabricator for 33 years and I'm impressed with you're fabrication, it does take a long time to work some jobs out , great channel

      Cheers Carl, good to hear from a professional, this wire frame was a challenge, as there are many angles but it seemed to work when I started with a single back bone which I then cut out once the frame was constructed... a little bit more to build in to it yet, plus a metal tray for the speedo, but can't wait to get to the point where I can bond it to the tank and start glassing it in ! Thanks for your input, always good to hear from those who know how to do it properly, all the best, Del

      Sure thing mate, appreciate that, with the ability to click forward the average watch time of our videos is less than half their length anyway... busy lives, people don't set time aside to watch things, but they do keep up, even if it's just with watching the results !

    I'm liking where you're going with this build. It looks like it's gonna be a monster cafe racer kinda thing when you're done. I thought of a name suggestion, but I'll save it until you ask. Seeing you fabricate makes me want to get a welder and learn that too. You're an inspiration, sir. Keep it up!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jamon, am interested to hear your name suggestion... they are all welcome, just the choice that won't be made till the bike is done... ! If you wanna start fabricating, just do it buddy ! Life is just too short to say 'some day'... there's a hidden fabricator in all of us , all you need to do is get practising, and I hear you can get basic MIG welders from Harbor Freight for about half what we pay over here... !!!!

    Ciao Del!
    First of all thanks for posting up this update, and do not listen to those who complain about the njmber and the length of your vids.. as you said: plenty of quick before/after out there, what we want to see is all the tinkering and faffing that lies behind the final result.
    Secondly, I'm very happy to see your free hand skills applied to yet another fabrication. I'm amazed by how easy you make it look!
    keep them coming
    Matteo

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matteo, great to hear from you again, hope you are well... you're right, perhaps the revelation to many of the impatient ones is just how long a bike build takes... unless you are bolting together accessory parts, then a fabircation build will take at least between 200-300hrs work, and people wonder why a hand built custom bike costs £20k...lol ... this build is only partly to produce a bike at the end, it's more about passing on a few tricks that folks may want to use !

    Zero to nothing over spray issues when airbrushing. And I'm using water base colours too - no odour. Unless we're spraying candy colours...these I have solvent base, but it all depends on the main theme of the project. Obviously clear coating is a bit more messy process. Looking good!

      Thanks mate, it's a really old tradition that I first spotted being used on custom cars back in the 1980's, you can build all sorts of fun things with almost no weight to speak of... min. 3mm wire and mild steel is best, as it welds nice and beds with your fingers, get creative buddy, it's loads of fun!

    Anyone who criticises you for documenting your project rather than just doing a before & after video. You can always do a before & after video when you've finished. Personally I love the fact you're documenting all of your successes and failures.

    @greggferns3278 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know this isn't exactly relevant to the current subject matter,and you may already know about it,or have used it,but there is an aluminium brazing method(not strictly welding,but with the same result),called HTS 2000.I've just got my grubby mitts on some and can't wait to start.Obviously lighter than steel,works at 400 deg c(ish),with a propane torch.Ideal for modding,methinks Del,without the big initial outlay of welding plant.Keep up the good work.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, I have heard of it, looks cool, but it's a longer process and brazing always involves heating the metal slowly, and even at 400' prolonged heat processes cause further conductivity along the metal, heating up the whole frame, which when this thin can lead to distortion, MIG welding is instant, and far more localised in heat terms, so the distortion is very minimal ... but I do love brazing and soldering, good ol' school processes!

    Certainly one way to do it , however I would have shaped the console out of closed cell foam since the goal is to use fiber glass anyway to cover it and bond it to the tank. It would be as light and also could be shaped in any desired design.

    • @dntower85
      @dntower85 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wire may work but foam ideal would work better. Del could use the wire frame to make paper templates, to transfer to the foam.

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you ever spilt petrol on closed cell foam??? I wanna solid steel frame that will stay there under the fibre galss, as I don't plan on laminating it up 1/4" thick to be strong enough, like you say, many ways to do it !

    • @Herzankerkreuz67
      @Herzankerkreuz67 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Moonfleet41
      I might not have explained myself precise enough but of course the foam has to be properly sealed against the gasoline which has to be done anyway before using paint and the right paint job will make it gasoline resistant anyway !
      But however you do it is of course up to you, non the less covering the wire frame with fiber glass will require a lot of filler to smooth out ...

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely right my mate, once you seal the base foam in with fibre glass and paint, it's out of harms way, but there is an issue (and I did consider this at length before I started) with the tank cap area... as you fill, you can often spill fuel around the tank cap, as we all know, and it would be pretty impossible to seal the foam againstt he surface of the tank, and all up inside the console, and am pretty sure if you've ever split gasoline on expanded foam, you'll know the way it instantly dissolves it, like boiling water on ice, so I thought, just to be sure, to avoid the use of it altogether... I know I have chosent he harder route with a wire frame, but I feel it is a safer one long term...

  • @jayjayk4915
    @jayjayk4915 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    We like the long videos, if we didnt we would just look at before and after picrures on the internet. The details are why were subbed

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure mate, I think 99% of people do that,but there are a minority on You Tube with the attention span of a May Fly, who like 2min videos that give instance results, and are seemingly very quick to tell us so...

    very good my amigo..se allows me to hum hint .. use the hair dryer to heat and remove the stickers on the tank side .

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tank decals cannot be removed with heat as they are lacquered and bonded in... feel the decals on the tank yourself and you'll see they are buried under clear coat... normal, un-covered, decals will come off by pouring hot water over, or a hair dryer, but not tank decals .... the method here is to slice them off, very carefully, trying not to damage the paint below, then rub down the mark left behind, so it's all level ....

      Hi Paul... i did it a dis-service by saying "battery opperated", its far from that mate... it is in fact, an internal power cell, charges by USB, and is at least the quality of a reasonable mobile phone...and cost £80..!!!! It's way more accurate than a magnet dial speedo, and a lot easier to read.. Its the very best item i could find without going for a full datalogger which is three times the price..!!

      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think my answer to you was at all pompous or sarcastic my friend, and I meant nothing of the sort... to me it is obvious to put a drain pipe at the lowest point, and remember when I'm recording this I don't have a script, I make it up as a go along, and say it as I think it... it did occur to me whilst I was talking at that point, that any drain tube should go at the bottom, but elected not to say so because I don't want to teach people to suck eggs - it seems sometimes I can't do right for doing wrong... perhaps, it's possible, you took my answer the wrong way, I'm not a pompous or sarcastic person, my intention is only to share what I'm doing and entertain people, if you feel I offended you, I apologise, you clearly don't know me very well...

      Hi Daz, I was very concious along the way of not making it look like a web, but just a base frame, so I can still change things a bit...
      The song 'Sirens' is one of the Transitions rare orginal tracks, to have been recorded, they have much original work, but it's only ever been performed at live gigs - however , as they are primarily a covers band, which is how they make their living, virtually none has been recorded... and no, we haven't used it before !

      Metal frame is best, it's permanent and always provided strength underneatht the fibre glass - I need a strong frame to hold the speedo try, and fibre glass alone won't provide that unless it's 1/4" thick...

      They are a great tool, but have tested mine using the car, and they have about a 5sec delay on logging your speed and if your speed is fluctuating, say in a residential area, then they get 'confused' and start registering 200mph then 10mph lol ...

    As always great vid and given me a couple of idea for mine. Slightly off topic but is there any way i can test a tank for leaks before painting. I recently painted in with a half decent finish and found once it was on the bike it had a pin hole leak or is there a way to seal them? Cant wait for the next vid.
    Lewis

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lewis.. yes you can test any tank using petrol itself....it will find the smallest leak even if its just oozes out of a pin hole... all you need is about a pint and roll it all round till you've covered every surface..!

    • @Cyclerepairz
      @Cyclerepairz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Moonfleet41 is there any way to seal a pin hole?

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      There sure is, if you cannot weld it, then sometimes you are solder it, which is a little easier, and as final belt and braces, line it with an epoxy lining product such as PetSeal, available on Ebay... also it will seal in any flakes of rust and stop it getting worse...

      It's really compact little unit, but at £80 it is a basic one, takes about 2-3 secs to 'catch up' with minor speed fluctuations but way better than some crappy little Bates style speedo, which is a bit done to death after 30yrs!

    Hey Del, did you try a heat gun to remove stickers and such on the gast tank? I've successfully removed stickers before with a heat gun and just a knife with minimum effort and without scratching the paint (which obviously wasn't an issue for you in this one)...
    Keep up the good job!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rami, the decals on this tank , as with all petrol tanks, are lacquered in with a fuel proof clear coat, and no amount of hot gun will get that off... it works on regular decals, that are uncovered, but on fuel tanks they are sealed in ...

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It gives a bright LED speed reading, with numbers almost 1" high, which can be read at a glance, and I want the bike minimal, and the console is more about re-defining the shape of the tank than accomodating the speedo, if that's all it was about, then I simply wouldn't have one at all, as I want it minimal... like all streetfighters should be!

      Hi mate, brake cleaner wiped off the tiny bit of glue on the tank pad, but the Kawasaki decals were lacquered in deep and the front decal had the fuel proof glue on it, and lighter fluid just don't touch that stuff , it's the same as the unleaded stickers they put next to filler caps now, they are a bitch to get off with any chemical, even thinners, but when you are painting the tank, you can afford to be brutal aye?!

    The console skeleton looks awesome, makes me think a bit on the camel bag i use over my tank,, therefore the way it's attached to my motorcycle, i got a base similar to this one: www.advpulse.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ktm-tank-bag-attachment-rin.jpg, if you buld one like that using steel, the you can just screw it on the tank itself giving it a robust/solid attachment point, also will be easier to unmount if required.just my two cents, i hope it helps.
