I love this guitar. It's pretty great to be able to swap out P90's, and I think Firebird pickups also fit in there. That finish is great. Nice one, guys.
Thanks for a great comp. My 79 Deluxe,I bought new, is wine red. When they reissued the deluxe in the early 90s , they offered it in wine red, and that color has also been offered on the traditional. I still have it. I guess it’s vintage now, as I am.
Beautiful guitar! Excellent sound and grateful a real player demo played it for us! You'd be surprised how often an occasional player demos a guitar. Cannot really tell what the guitar sounds like unless the playing itself runs through styles that show off the tones, brightness, bass and depth. Thank you for that! Big Time!
I started gigging Gibson Les Paul deluxes from 1980 And never looked back, I have never even needed to take the truss rod covers off ! ( Three piece neck 🙂👍🇬🇧 ) You cannot beat the deluxe mini humbuckers ! Never mind so many other manufacturers making their version, ........ Stay with THESE mini humbuckers.
The decision to use the Mini-humbuckers in the P90 covers, was that of Jim Deurloo. When the doors at Kalamazoo, closed in 1984, Deurloo, along with JP Moats, and Marv Lamb, started the Heritage Guitar Company, renting a small portion of the Parsons St. complex.
Nice demo guys. I have the mini's in my Firebird, and I really like them. A bit brighter than the full-sized humbuckers, but all of the growl, clarity, etc.
Great comparison, thanks! Really impressed with this one - only listened to the clean section (if it sounds good clean then OD / Distortion / whatever will be fine IMHO) and the balance and clarity were excellent. Great looking, too - ok . . . shallow comment but the burgundy is right up my street - I bought the Epi Cantrell 'Wino' to mod pick-ups and wiring and the colour played a part along with the ebony board and overall build.
I had a '60's Kalamazoo made Epiphone Wilshire 12-string equipped with mini-humbucking pickups. I've liked the sound of mini-hums ever since. I finally got a Goldtop Deluxe a couple of years ago. Super cool guitar, IMO.
Fantastic reaction!!! Have alwayz heard of and wondered about Mini Humbucker s. Great tid bit of history and i learn something new on all of your reaction s. Who knew Zack was filming this whole time ala Jimi Hendrix style , left handed. As said b4 i purchased the EPIPHONE Worn Cherry SG with P 90s, only because it was just $20 cheaper than Zacks Faded Pelham blue, but i had my eye on it and LOVE THAT COLOR. The Deluxe looked and sounded great. As you say , its just a tad brighter. And a real consideration for a future addition to my collection. As always keep up the great work.
Back in the day around 1980 i helped my friend install a dimarzio distortion bridge in his , i think it went in without any wood carving , just installed by mounting the pu ring ! I now own one but it had both pu's converted to regular sized nickle cover gibsons. i'm thinking of installing mini back in but its scarred , took out a pickups and saw the wounds !
thats a nice guitar....... its a shame though that the Standards price was jacked up again..... $3K..... whew..... thats alot of dough....... I hope Gibson realizes alot of folks just cant afford that kind of coin for a guitar.....
@@jarredbaca8112no it wasn't. That was the faded models that were that price and you can still get them for that. The regular finish les pauls were 2800
I’m late to the party on this video, but still want to comment. I had a Deluxe in that same color back in the day. It was a 1976 model. Multi piece maple top with the sandwich body, and three piece maple neck. I loved that guitar, but sold it in the early 80’s do to financial problems. So, when this version was introduced, I was excited. But the first ones were all cherry sunburst. However, a used one became available to me. It is the cherry sunburst model. It is a 2022 model. I LOVE the sound and playability of it. The new ones are (in my opinion) built much better than the original 70’s models were. They are a solid mahogany body (not a sandwich build) with a two piece maple top (not a three piece) and they have the mahogany neck, which I like better than the three piece maple neck on a guitar like this. The other big advantage to the new models is, if you noticed when you removed the pickups, there is a metal plate that will accept the P90 pickups. Not modification needed. However, I prefer the mini humbucker, but the P90’s are a great sounding pickup as well. I will keep this one forever (unless I am offered a wine red one in a trade), I love playing it, and it is a good alternative to my Heritage H-150 (Les paul style built in the old Gibson Kalamazoo plant). These are great guitars, that many simply overlook just because of the mini Humbuckers. And yet most have never actually played one. Great video
My 1977 Les Paul Pro Deluxe Came with P-90s and in Wine Red and I have same year Ebony . I’m not not a weight relief guitarist by no means. And I have a 1972 Wine Deluxe with Mini humbuckers I prefer as a back up I’m a P-90 guy.. either through JCM. 800 Marshalls or Hi-Watt all three Smoke best ones I’ve ever owned!!!!
Honestly, I have regular humbuckers, will likely pick up a P 90's 50's but for a semi similar tone I'ld prefer the thunderbird since I have other les pauls.
I would rather win the Les Paul deluxe than the custom shop guitar, wonderful thiugh it must be, but I love those red mini humbucker deluxes, because I used to own a beautiful sounding black one, and stupidly let it go swapping it for an amp which I don't even still have! I allways wanted the dark red ones I saw but couldn't track one down.
Well, it's a pretty guitar....I love this looks....BUT the model with the full-size humbuckers is what I prefer. The sound is fuller and "more mature" if that makes sense.....more suitable for jazz and western swing.
I’ve only seen a handful of early 70s Les Pauls with the mini humbucker like mine, that have “Gibson” embossed in the pick up covers. I’ve seen a lot of review reviews of these newer versions of the 70s deluxe, but no one has really explained to me how come some of these guitars were fitted with the Gibson branded/embossed pickups. Anyone care to try?.
Love the deluxe. The first Gibson Les Paul I ever put my paws on was a Deluxe. Don't recall the year but it was a natural finish (not sure it was factory) and the thing was AMAZING!!!
I had an early 70 deluxe with mini humbuckers in wine red. They were definitely not as nice as the guitar you’re looking at. The mahogany body was a sandwich of a number of pieces of wood by that I really mean a sandwich split right down the middle with a thin piece of wood between them. The wine red was darker you had to put it in full sun to see the wood grain of the top. Also the workmanship was sloppy. There’s a very good reason guitar players started looking for older instruments in the 70s because Gibson and Fender were putting out junk. Making them as fast and as cheap as possible. The new guitars of today are much better. That includes many made overseas.
nothing wrong with 70s guitars compared to earlier. the real reason some players used older ones is the same as now, or the promoters wouldn't pay them enough to buy new ones.
Side comment here... or rather a request. There are plenty of arguments for and against coil tapping and or splitting versus non tapping/splitting. For the sake of simplicity, despite the real differences in the two methods, let us call it "splitting" for this comment. Any chance of a video showcasing the features, and an honest opinion when buying an expensive Gibson, let's say, if the "split" is SH*T, or if the feature has no detraction and all plus sides? Also welcome is a dive into split vs tap. I have guitars with and without, and I do find I actually enjoy the option. I just do not know if I am losing a quality of sound on the humbuckers when not "split" on models that have been built with that option. Thank you in advance for any feedback.
I'm sure others can chime in too, but my simple answer is that if you are going to have this feature on a guitar, I generally find a coil SPLIT to be better than a coil TAP. A coil tap to me, like on the Gibson Les Paul Studio, sounds less effective to my ears from what most people expect when they use either term, which is a humbucker/single coil sound. The split, as found on for example the Epiphone Les Paul Studio, sounds more true to that effect in my ear. However, it does bother me, and there's not much of a way around, the loss in volume with the split that occurs when splitting the humbucker. The coil TAP I see as more of a "tone modifier" switch rather than a single/humbucker split. I know many people prefer lots of wiring options on guitars. Me personally (and everyone is different) I prefer very simple controls and don't need extra switches, and even in the case of the coil split, it does have an effect but it doesn't sound as good as a true single coil sound. I would rather switch guitars in a set and go from Les Paul to Tele or Strat or whatever than have a "one guitar that does everything," but that's just me. Many players I talk to love the split option. This is a good topic you bring up, and thanks for watching
I really love the color of the 70s but the sound is off imho. I was watching a few videos and it sounded thin-ish. Not exactly the sound I would expect, lest to say to pay 2600 for.
haha so weird to want $3000 for a copy of something i could have had for pocket change back in the '90s. i passed up a nice black deluxe then that i wish i'd snagged but i was totally into strats for some insane reason
It's too bad the new ones doesn't come with a maple neck (as the late 70's ones did). All Gibsons should have a 3-piece maple neck with a volute. It's a much better construction than the one piece mahogany ones.
That's an old finish. I had the energy red finish on my Les Paul Studio back in the late 90"s. Gibson is really pushing the envelope with their finish choices 🤣😂😂
This guitar is nice and I love the color but I already own a Firebird with mini humbuckers and would rather have a Les Paul standard with either burstbuckers or 490 series. However, Gibson does not currently offer a Les Paul standard with this color and if anything it’s just a testament to how Gibson once again doesn’t listen to its customers but listens to some idiot with a college degree!
@@AJ-rr4xi I’m not exactly sure what you’re getting at. Every Gibson Firebird (reverse, and non-reverse) I have seen come with mini humbuckers or mini P-90s. I have seen a few with full-size humbuckers but they were modded on.
The standard sounds the best to me 👌. Had a 1978 ebony standard I sold to help finance daughter's education abroad. Miss it.

Oh man!!! got that G.A.S. feeling. Why is the "next" guitar, NEVER enough!? What a guitar. Thanks for sharing guys! Great work.
I think I fell in love with the mini's. They definitely split the difference in sound, and I thought the clarity was dead nuts on. Beautiful Axe!

loving that SG - thanks for the comparison edits

Excellent playing! That Les Paul is gorgeous 😮

I'm very lucky to be an owner of this guitar model. They are fantastic -- easy to play, wonderful pickups. Really cuts through in jam settings.
