      @Violet’s Equines Chill out. Crystal is fine, and this person obviously cares about ehr as well. Joking around makes us feel better and less stressed, and that in turn will make crystal feel calmer as well.

    Tips for you if your horse is colicing:
    Signs of colic:
    *curled top lip (sign of being in pain)
    *excessive groaning
    *not wanting to move(not walking forward/wanting to lay down)
    *rolling (horses roll to try and relieve the pain and pressure of their stomach but in the end sometimes twist their bloated stomachs)
    *not passing food (not pooping)
    Good things to do if your horse is colicing:
    *keep them moving
    *Give then access to water
    *if they aren’t pooing DONT LET THEM EAT, it can cause fecal compaction and the stomach will bloat dangerously and can cause death
    *Although if they have passed a bit of Pooh but still have signs of colic sometimes it is good to let them snack on extremely green watery grass if recommended by your vet
    *get the vet out to oil your horse, this is where your vet will sedate your horse and put a tube down to your horses Stomach and put oil in it to try and lubricate the of bowels and Pooh
    *Take them for a trailer trip!!
    this is what I have been recommended by vets on multiple occasions and the tips I found the most helpful for horses that have coliced in my presence! Remember colic can be caused by an under active bowel OR an overactive bowel. Listen to your horses stomach to hear their bowel movements and try to pin point which has caused it. With Underactive bowel you won’t hear much movement, with an overactive bowel you will hear lots of bowel movement :)

      Sometimes you don’t even have to move the trailer, just load them and they’ll poo

      This will be SUPER helpful to those just starting out with a horse. Colic can be SO dangerous and is caused by tons of things so it’s extremely important to always be aware of it, although it’s a pretty common misconception that a horse rolling will cause the intestine to twist. My horse just coliced about a month ago and i was full of questions for the vet and she told me that it is actually a pretty bad misconception because sometimes, the intestines are already twisted and the horse rolling will scare the owner into doing anything and everything to get the horse up but only causes more stress in the process. It is still not good for the horse to roll because they end up scratching and bruising themselves on the ground but most of the time a horses intestines aren’t going to twist due to rolling.

      My vet says that laying down is perfectly fine, as the pain messes with their electrolytes and makes them tired. Small rolling can be ok depending on what type you suspect, although he said to try and keep them from doing it very much. The colics that I've had on my farm have either been because of grass clippings (once, mare) or weather/gas (three times, gelding). Hay is good for gas colic IF they eat it by themselves, vet said it was like carbonated drinks for humans.
      Gas colic has another symptom of making the horse want to trot. My gelding's gas/weather colic was only about 4 hours long before he started nibbling on hay. But it was 4 hours of letting him trot around and then letting him lay. He also let out a watery poo and some pretty massive farts when he started getting better around 3.5 hours. Once he started nibbling on hay the vet gave us the clear to go inside and check in an hour or two. We did and he was eating hay much more. Original colic was at around 4 or 5PM, and we were out there untill about 8:30. Last check was at 12AM. Morning feed he was perfectly fine, if a bit tired. Ate breakfast just fine.
      The other two weather colics he had were in the middle of the night. We just noticed in the morning when he ate really slow and seemed really tired. Luckily he hasn't had an episode in about 3 years.
      Grass clippings colic was my fault. I didn't know. We stayed with my mare for a while and she finally started nibbing hay. Once she got a bit more vigorous with her hay munching we went inside. I don't even think she was that tired the next day.

    Heyyy girl I don’t want to bash or anything but, at the feed store they have some boot looking things that we use on our race horses to ice their feet you just put it like a regular boot and fill it with water and ice and your good to go you def should get those for future events they tie at the top so horses can’t take them off 😊😊

  • @kali-bk1vs
    @kali-bk1vs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My mare had colic, and here's what we did:
    We watched out for any lip curls, because lip curls can be signs of pain.
    Made sure she was drinking or eating, if she wasn't it definitely meant she had colic.
    Keep her moving. If your horse doesn't poop or anything, keeping them moving, walk and trot for a long time will keep their gut moving and with all of the other vet related things that help, it will help process the poop through their gut.

    • @NoThankUBeQuiet
      @NoThankUBeQuiet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Umm...Ive been through A LOT of colic over the years, some horses will eat grass when colicing. You only need to keep them moving if they are thrashing, you can cause more damage if you make them move too much and their intestines arent solid.

    Hey Cindy, just a little tip in case you don’t know since you didn’t mention it in the video, but when a horse might be colicing it’s good to listen for gut noises and make sure she is pooping haha! Also from my knowledge, you don’t have to put that much mineral oil in their feed. And if your horse is actually colicing, don’t let them eat because that will just cause more of an impaction.

    Better for her digestion if she's walking around anyway.
    I'm sure I've said this before, but I love how much that mare trusts you.
    You're doing a great job. Keep it up!

    I'm glad crystal seems to be doing ok. Even though the chicken feed could give her colic, I recommend also giving her sand clear since they could always be eating grass with sand in it. One of the horses I used to ride awhile ago had sand colic and she sadly passed away. So I recommend taking a lot of precautions and if you need to walk her around and not let her roll or lay down in general. But it seems she's doing really well so I hope got the best

      Glazed Donut well it didn’t kill her. My brother in law left out a whole bin of chicken feed and basically ruined my nice barrel horse. Founder has been the worse and it gets to where she can’t walk but the other day she tried to trot. Planning on breeding her in 2-3 seasons
