It's when God raises his voice then goes to him and says, "Oh Moses". Almost as if he's picking him up to hug him like a father does with his toddler. I shed a tear every time. I miss my father.

@@liliantan2379 The universe is big, stars are born each and every second, galaxies perish and planets collide constantly. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." This is a law like that of the laws of physics that keep our feet to the ground. It is only when we are pardoned by the grace of God and are in him and accept him that we enter the kingdom of God. No amount of Good via our own might will stop the law of sin and death. If you would like, I would love to lead you into the sinners prayer to accept Jesus into youd heart and be graced and forgiveness by God.

Creating needless suffering to prove the point that “I can make you suffer, but I won’t as long as you’re faithful to me”?
From what I can tell, god allowed suffering of his people, let it continue for a while til he decided “nah, they’ve had enough”, then killed the innocents of the other population who did nothing wrong. Sounds like your god is more than a little petulant and abusive, and perhaps a bit genocidal

What I love about this scene - the voice of God is a mixture of all of the actors’ voices. The whispers, sighs, shouted overlays, etc. The voice that is the most prominent is the voice of Moses (Val Kilmer). In one of the behind the scenes, a producer said that they did this to show the how in Genesis, God breathed His life into man, and so God speaks His truth through those around us and speaks internally to us (our own inner voice). If you listen closely, you can pick out the voice of Rameses(Ralph Fines), Miriam(Sandra Bullock), Aaron (Jeff Goldbloom), and Tzipporah(Michelle Pfifer), Jethro (Donald Glover), Etc.

Moses was so human in this film. To have to play the role of being God's messenger was terrifying and it would mean he would go through so much. It would even lead to him to allowing the Angel of Death to kill his nephew and completely breaking his relationship with Ramses, someone he really loved and wanted to be with if only the situation was different. It's even in the lyrics "and even now I wish that God
had chosen another". Moses was portrayed to be a person just trying his best to finish his duty but it didn't mean that he was this brave, fearless, all-wise leader. He was scared, confused, and suffered mostly through this journey which is how most people would feel if they were in the same position.

It also seems to me that God is the only being that actually IS. As in, all the rest of us (angels, humans, animals, plants) exist only _through_ Him. As if being cast into existance and kept in existance by the delicate yet firm thread of His breath, His word. We exist, because He continually wills us into existance.
But that is just speculation on my part. God's nature is beyond any possible understanding by any of his creatures.

I think the part of God's anger to moses was also clear in the Bible when Moses made so much excuses. It was also said in Exodus 4:14
Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you.

  • @EclipseHedgehog
    @EclipseHedgehog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +323

The line "How can I even SPEAK to these people?!" is a nice little abridged version. He literally meant by the term 'speak' in the bible, saying “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue." God didn't want to hear any excuses because He chose Moses and that was that. Which is why the first question was "who made man's mouth?" The LORD did, and He makes no mistakes. Also a little fact when Moses was making excuses showed he feared the people more than The LORD. That changed quickly as soon as God raised his voice afterwards. This is still my favorite scene in the entire movie bar none and still tear up to this day, the music composed by Hans Zimmer is still fantastic, some believe the Holy Spirit came in to help him with this score.

Moses gave God 5 excuses for why he shouldn't be the one to go to Egypt.
    1. "Me?! who am I to lead these people?"
    2. "They'll never believe me."
    3. "They wont even listen"
    4. "But I was their enemy, I was the prince of Egypt. The son of the man who slaughtered their children."
    5. "How can I even speak to these people?"
Then declared that God has "chosen the wrong messenger"
No wonder God got upset with him.
And lets not forget that in the actual story, God gave concession to his objections. Showed him many signs and Moses still objected.
And yet, don't we all do the same thing?
Then, God immediately comforts Moses and assures him that He will be with him. A very powerful scene.

These days the church changed a lot the meaning of God like an entity that is perfect, knows everything and is everywhere. I really prefer the Bible version of God as it is really more similar to us (it is written that he made us like him, so if we have doubts, anger, love and dreams, so does he).

After going through this story in the "Bible in a Year" podcast on Exodus, I couldn't help but want to watch this clip again because I remembered how good it visually displayed the burning bush, Moses/God's conversation, and music to add the extra emotions to it.
Watching this now, I really appreciate how when Moses cowers when God tells him to Go even though he doesn't feel he should be his messenger, he comes to comfort him like a good parental figure would do in a similar circumstance. Our parents always push us to be the best versions of ourselves even when it makes us uncomfortable and even though we might doubt ourselves, our parents will typically and without pause remind us how they're with us no matter what!
I know that God and our loved ones are with us, but you can't help but imagine how shaken up Moses was after hearing from the Lord himself that God will be with him because it's what any Christian would always cherish to the end of their days!

For anyone curious, God still does this miracle of the fire not burning you (as depicted in the film) every year on Greek Orthodox Easter. A priest is locked in the Holy Sepulcher (Christs tomb), where both the tomb and chosen priest is inspected to make sure there is no trickery to be had (e.g, lighters, matches, flint and steel, etc.). The priest is then locked in there, and he prays until God lights a fire on a candle, in which this candle does not die out until every person attending the ceremony has lit their candles, and this fire does not burn those who hold it to their skin, nor does it burn the clothing. Truly, God is amazing. Praise be to the Almighty!!

We're talking about how Val Kilmer made this scene what it is even years from now, and I'm not arguing that aspect, but we also forget the instrumentals that made it possible as well- Hans Zimmer's best work, I'd say, is the 7 minutes and 17 seconds of the OST The Burning Bush for this movie. I listen to it- it along with this movie, was what made me question my atheism for the longest time before turning to God. hearing Hans Zimmer's Burning Bush made me feel like weeping with how overwhelmed my emotions became. I felt wonder, awe, fear, questioning myself and Him, I felt self-0hatred for what I did before, and what I've become now, and eventually I began crying because I felt forgiveness for myself from somewhere I didn't have within me. I can say with full confidence, that I feel as if God is with me now, where I had doubts I had no right to have before. all that from one actor and one musical composer... Hans Zimmer and Val Kilmer are legends in this movie, and may they NEVER be forgotten.

For God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son that who so ever believe in him shall not perish, but have ever lasting life. Moses is a good example of how we believe God can't use or forgive us due to any sin we have committed or who we might be. Let God work through you. Let God forgive you of your sins and turn away from them. Then you'll feel the holy spirit which is what Moses felt when God comforted him and guided him. Cry out to Jesus and he will not turn you away. You might laugh at my comment now, but we all come to terms with God at some point in this life and for sure the next. I pray for whoever you are that you know Jesus loves you so much and he will deliver and make a difference in your life. Trust in him just like Moses did. In Jesus's holy name...Amen.

This scene moves me to tears. Every time I hear “WHO MADE MAN’S MOUTH?” It floors me.
So often I’ll get caught up in my head, trying to convince myself that my inner struggles are too great, even for my lord, who literally parted the sea. If he can part the sea or so, so much more, who am I to try and convince myself that he can’t know the inner turmoil in my heart?
From the first time I saw this movie at like 8 years old to now as a 31 year old man, for some reason this burning bush is how I imagine God. The same God we hear here shouting and whispering simultaneously. The same God whose angels Felled Lucifer. The same God who sent his son to save us and so, so much more. That God can do such thing and so much more yet still have such a powerful hand on our life and know us and love us beyond our comprehension is flooring yet so assuring in the darkest times.
“I am that I am.” No matter how much or how little I try to explain that statement to myself, I kind of like being aware that God’s being is beyond our comprehension.
All Praise be to the lord of lords.

What I like about this is how, while from God's perspective, He's right to be angry when Moses questions Him and His judgement God quickly calms down, seeing how scared Moses is and remembering that humans are flawed beings that lack divine perspective, basically embraces him like a parent would a child and softly tells him it will be alright and he need not be afraid.

WHO MADE THE DEAF, THE MUTE, THE SEEING OR THE BLIND?

4 years since my last comment on this video and I cannot praise the absolute beauty of this scene enough, it moved me when I was younger and it still does today. I love how mature the story of Moses and the Passover is, yet even while I was learning it as a kid I (and the rest of my Sunday school classmates) was not really disturbed by its contents. Even children are intelligent enough to comprehend these sorts of themes and events.
The filmmakers could've incorporated more detailed depictions of the unsavory details in Exodus but chose to remain tactful, while not being afraid the show the harsh realities of people who lived in those times. People of all ages can watch, enjoy, and reflect upon this masterpiece.

This movie was legendary. As a Christian theologian I had pretty much no complaints since it's understandable that the movie takes certain little freedoms. I still think that it is good to remember that biblically, Moses never had a good relationship with the Pharao, and that the woman who adopted Moses was very powerful and the only one able to defy the Pharao who ordered the genocide. Also, the Pharao who was alive when Moses went into exile, died during that time. Moses came back 40 years later as an 80 year old man to face a new Pharao (not Ramses, altough there is a debate among conservatives and liberals on the dating of Exodus). For those interested in this you can order Eugene H. Merril's book - The Kingdom of Priests
Btw, when you read Acts 7 it would seem that Moses always knew who he was and was seeking to deliver them by his power (This explains why he killed the Egyptin beating a hebrew slave) but God had to humble him and teach him that it is not him but God who will deliver His people.

I just noticed that when God admonishes him, he's not raising his voice in an angry or scolding way. He's doing it to prove his strength and wisdom as a reassurance that he KNOWS Moses is the man for the job, then becomes quieter when he realizes Moses misunderstood his tone as wrath. Sort of like "Ha, you think I would make a mistake like that? LOOK UPON ME, AND KNOW MY- oh right, you aren't used to that sort of thing."

I have always loved this movie as a kid growing up. I watch it every Passover whenever it came on. It's not just that the animation was incredible, but the amount of research to get this movie as accurately as possible, even down to the quotes from the Exodus itself. Plus the portrayal of God is so unique that it almost looks like an ethereal spirit that can be overwhelmingly raging and powerful but also comforting and understanding. It still bugs me that this movie didn't win awards. But I'm glad it's being appreciated now as a work of art.
