The ordeal was traumatic to say the least and caused me to attempt suicide at 14 (I almost died and stayed in hospital for 6 weeks ...then was transferred to an inpatient psychiatric hospital for teens with 'issues' for a year. That turned my world upside down and I felt like it was a punishment for telling an adult I had been having sex ('consentual' and not with a man in his 60's who was my foster father from the age of 12). She told the police, not me (as should as a responsible adult). But my teenaged brain didn't understand and I vowed I'd never speak about any of the others. Only in my late 20's (which was just 3 years ago) I began to share the full extent of the rape and sexual abuse I experienced with 2 friends and a therapist as it somehow felt safe (finally). Sexual trauma like that can scare you into silence for many years or a lifetime, until you feel safe enough to share and be believed...
