They only have so much time to view various areas, and a hot desert would make thermal at long distance unusable. It would be hard to spot a small cluster of infantry in such a broad search area. The drone pilot would have to zoom very far which would reduce the area to cover, and he had to also watch the back of the convoy for vehicles sneaking up, as well as investigate all vehicles from side roads.

Doubt the Americans would be allowed to have helicopters supporting them on Mexican soil. On top of that, there are no US military bases in Mexico. I ain't sure how the fuel with these works, but I guess that could be another issue?
