    Good demonstration, I have sadly ignored my surface gauge for many years. I like the use of the 123 block for squareness, simple and quick. Enjoyed the video, cheers!

    Thanks for showing Mike. Great description of some of its uses. Handy too on a mill or lathe for certain indications instead of a magnetic base. Regards from Australia.

    The video came up in my feed. I'd left a comment about a month back and have acquired 2 General surface gages, as in the video, since then. The first one was reground by its previous owner. Did a nice job. The second one is completely stock. The General is heavier than a B&S 621 or a Starrett 57/257A and works great as a base for a bench magnifier, which is how I use it. Old eyes. It's more rigid than the Lufkin 520/522. Slides around beautifully after stoning. I'd recommend it. Comparable to a B&S 621. And it's inexpensive. Why fight it?

      Way back when I bought that in 1964, I was a starving apprentice. Even though it's not a top brand, I've been very happy with it. And you're right it's just slightly bigger than the starretts, B&S etc.

    Nice! Just a comment on checking for square. I saw a gentleman using the ball end of the mast in place of your block. Great demonstration!!!!

    Yes Mike it has become my go to for height stand and I do like how handy it is on the machine. The Cadillac height gauge I have is the split type you have the option of under or over on each inch. I cant thank you enough for the stand.

    Just watched a 8 yr old video about rebuild cylinder 5 1 and was like that cylinder turned to easy for this guy and thought to myself is this guy still making videos and looky here you did one 2 hrs ago , what are the odds.

    Nice run thru Mike. I think my gage block is very similar to yours... including the rod with the hooked end. Scribed lines invariably easier to see after adding some blue, even when light. I do like my height gage too and that gets used most - when that is I even manage time in the shop any more! :)

      It's nice to hear from you Chris. I hope all is well with you and winter isn't too harsh in your location. Now days I see guys using their calipers for layout lines. I'm hesitant to do that with mine. I understand there are calipers with carbide tips for that purpose. Thanks for your comments. Tc, Mike

      Around Christmas things were pretty tricky with extreme lows, wind etc - not a fun 5 days! Expect you had it pretty rough too. Health continues down hill - particularly back etc - trying to adapt to hobbling! I think calipers OK like the way Clickspring uses his - but that's on brass usually and very light on bluing. All best. :)

    I’m glad you mentioned the slip pins as I was watching your video to work out what they actually were. I’m just curious as to why you’d want to set something up parallel on the surface plate?

    • @michaelmurray9154
      @michaelmurray9154  ปีที่แล้ว

      No reason for being parallel on the surface plate. It was just a demo. Tc, Mike

    Just so you know in California we call it a surface gauge

      We call it that too. I may have misspoke.

    3:05 - Does the indicator holder comes with the surface gauge or test indicator? 5:05 - good to know that it's not great for accurate scribing, what other scribing methods is better? 13:23 - Would it be ideal to slide the surface gauge on the edge side of the granite surface plate since it's not finished/lapped?

    • @michaelmurray9154
      @michaelmurray9154  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      3:05 sometimes yes sometimes no. You can find anything you are missing on line.
      5:05 depends on accuracy requirements. Generally there are better methods. I prefer hand tools such as scriber, square, compass etc.
      13:23 I slid along the surface place as a demonstration only. I can't think of an occasion to actually use an edge of a surface plate. All the best to you, Mike

    I have one where at the end of the mast , opposite to the ball end there is a small ~1/2" disk that is shaped to, looks like, 60deg angle and is sharp, screwed into the end. Shaped like that -->
    No clue what that is for. Anyone have an idea?

    • @felixf5211
      @felixf5211 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the ball end of the rod is used to gage for square, one can remove the disk to switch out, say, an indicator.
