A fascinating trip to Transylvania - the place where Count Dracula lived, the location of one of the most beautiful tracks in the world according to the Top Gear rating, incredibly mesmerizing mountains, waterfalls and the architecture of ancient castles.
The first stop of our trip is the city of Brasov. The founders of the city are considered to be the knights of the Teutonic Order. Brasov has the Gothic Church of St. Bartholomew (circa 1260), the Town Hall, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin in the neo-Byzantine style.
The next stop was the city of Bran and of course we visited the castle of Dracula ( Vlad III Tepes ). The castle was built in 1212 as a fortress on the way through the Rukar-Bran Gorge, which crosses the Carpathians. The castle is built on a rock using stone and brick. The building has the shape of an irregular trapezoid in the horizontal plan, and consists of four levels in the vertical plan. Today, the owner of the castle, the grandson of Queen Mary, leases the castle to the state for use as a museum. The legend of the vampire Count Dracula made the castle one of the most visited tourist attractions in Romania.
After we went towards Transfagarasan. This is a mountain road in the Carpathians, connecting the Romanian regions of Wallachia and Transylvania and passing through the Fagaras mountain range. It was built in 1970-1974 by order of Nicolae Ceausescu for military purposes. Today, this highway is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world and is one of the attractions of Romania. Due to the late snowmelt in the highlands, through traffic on the road between the northern and southern slopes of the Carpathians is open only from June 30 to November 1 and only during daylight hours - from 06:00 to 22:00. In 2009, the Top Gear presenters tested their sports cars on this road, and Jeremy Clarkson called this track the best for driving sports cars.
And the pleasant end of this little journey was the city of Hunedoara, where we visited the castle of Corvin - the family nest of the feudal family of Gunyadi. The father of Matthew Corvinus, Janos Gunyadi, built it in the middle of the 15th century on a high rock near the river Zlaszte. The fortress had an oval shape, and the only defensive tower was located in the northern wing, while it was closed by a stone wall on the southern side. In 1409, for his military merits, Vyk (Wojko) Gunyadi, the father of Janos Gunyadi, received the fortress and the adjacent land as a gift from the King of Hungary, Sigismund. Since 1724, the castle passed from state to state. First to Austria, then to Austria-Hungary, now Corvin Castle belongs to Romania.
It is said that due to the loss of favor of Gunyadi, Vlad III Dracula spent 7 years in the dungeon of Corvin Castle.
