I got a cookie press for Christmas when I was around 10 years old. I loved making spritz cookies and I still have the press 60 years later! I haven't used it in years but I think I'll break it out this weekend. Thanks John!
I love the way stuff was made before, it was made to last not get replaced. I had several vintage appliances including a hand-crank ice cream machine that was a wooden bucket on the outside, unfortunately when my dad passed away when I was younger a lot of that stuff was lost.
My son and I made these every year when he was a kid. We still do when we're able to be together for Christmas baking (he lives in San Diego; I live in Oregon). One year, I had run out of sprinkles, so I mixed up some cinnamon and sugar to use instead. He liked them so well I have to do some with cinnamon and sugar every year for him. Brings back happy memories. Thanks for always making me smile!
I spent the weekend before Christmas at a friends farm several years back, and his mom baked a ton of these for us to decorate/eat. Different shapes, tons of sprinkles, and colored icings. Never made these before, so it was such a fun experience for me. She then packed them up for us to take back home.. Good times. 🥲
I never comment on videos. This recipe is legit. I have a 60 year old electric cookie press that belonged to my mother. I have been using a recipe from an old cookbook for 20 years that usually gets me mixed results after a lot of yelling at my cookie press. I decided to try something new this year. Followed the recipe exactly as written and it every cookie came out on the first try. Thank you for sharing this recipe!!
First I LOVE your style of teaching. You make it fun. Now on to cookies. When we first married my husband would gobble these up as soon as I had them made.. He loved them, so I made them often. Sadly we lost him this past June to cancer...however I will be making these cookies to give out to friends. And who knows, maybe heaven has a Spritz cookie bakery . If it does I am certain he is their best customer.
This is AWESOME! I've had a cookie press for maybe 10 years or longer, never used it because..just because. I thought of getting rid of it several times but thought the day would come that I want to use it and thanks to John, it'll probably be this weekend!! Thanks John!!
I've had a cookie press for many years. Last time I used it, the cookies spread all over the place and I was disappointed and never used it again. I will try your recipe now and my cookie press. I trust you! Thank you
I fortunately have an electric cookie press that was purchased by my mom 50 years ago for making spritz cookies! Planning on making these cookies this holiday season. Thanks John!
I have my mom’s cookie press it’s older than I am, which, I must admit, is quite old. Lol. I watched with interest to see if your recipe matched hers and they were very different. My mom’s calls for a mixture of butter and cream cheese. Her recipe also calls for a teaspoon of orange zest, and a touch of cinnamon - vanilla extract only. My mom’s recipe is AMAZING! You just can’t eat one of these cookies. Her recipe was called Snowflakes and it came with the original press. I love your videos. So much baking to do. So little time. 😊❤️
I just made these!!!!thank goodness one recipe makes 100cookies they are an all time favorite of our families, especially during the holidays..they freeze well too
I make these every year. I have gone through a few presses over the years. These are my sister's favorites and she has been known to use them as "spoons" for cool whip. I'll be making them later this week. Doing something every night to build up my stash for gift giving. Last night was choc chip w/walnut and tonight is my grandma's roll and cut sugar cookies (we will decorate them on Christmas day). Right now it's all about baking and freezing!
This was the preferred cookie of our Christmas household! We seed the bar turned on its Sid for ribbon cookies! Then we glazed them with a light brush on milk glaze. Day 2 we go back and decorate elaborately. My mom started it when I was a child. My baby just had her first baby so it will be fun this year!!
Oh! Me too!! Spritz cookies are my favorite. I prefer vanilla and lemon flavorings. My favorite classic shape is the tree. I recently bought a set of Russian icing tips. Wow....I can crank out hundreds of little rosebud cookies out of 1 batch. For extra fun I stripe the bag with food color. My rose buds look artistic and professional. Thank you for your videos . I appreciate your kind manner.
My grandmother made these every year. I actually have one of those presses. It was gifted at a secret Santa. Never used it because I never learned. Still have no idea why I never got rid of it. I'm not a fan of baking. But, I give it a go every Christmas. May try these.
My favorite Christmas cookie to make. It’s not Christmas without them! My moms recipe calls for adding evaporated milk and the flavor is exquisite. Recipe from back in the 60’s or earlier. I love old recipes.
Hello John. I haven’t made these Spritz Cookies in several years but you have encouraged me to dust off my Presses (I have 4) and make these for my Christmas dinner using your recipe. My husband and I greatly enjoy watching your shows and we always get some wonderful ideas and short-cuts. Merry Christmas to you and your beautiful family and we wish you all the best in the New Year.
My mom had her mom's crank-handle cookie 'press' (early 1900's) and passed it down to me. I recently passed it on to my niece who was super close to my mom & loves to cook & bake & she loves it!
My Grandma use to make these at christmas. All diffrenrt colors and shaps. Love em have no had em in over 10 years, After she passed no one made them. This year I am going to hopfully they taste like hers.
I have my grandmother’s copper cookie press… they are my son’s FAVORITE cookies ever. It’s funny how impressed everyone is when they receive them, they are so simple to make.
I just made cherry pie bars with this type of cookie bottom, cherry pie filling, some more cookie batter placed on top and drizzled with almond glaze.... Sooo good especially chilled!!
Oddly, I just made cherry pie bars this evening too. They’re cooling, but later I’ll drizzle them with powdered sugar drizzle icing (I use bourbon instead of milk) and then sprinkle with slivered toasted almonds.
I use the same recipe and make plain, red and white spritz in different designs. One suggestion though, I use the silicon baking pads and they come out perfectly. Like you said no parchment paper, and no wax paper. I didn’t have much luck pressing the cookies directly on to the baking sheet. They seem to stick too much. I love decorating the cooks with all the different sprinkles and crystals. I also use the coloring gel because it’s thicker. If you use too much of the drops the dough can be too liquid and not hold together properly.
Omg I remember making spritz cookies in home ec class! I had bought a cookie press years ago and made spritz cookies at home once but haven’t made them since. They are easy and fun to make so I think I’ll try making them again this year. Thank you for the recipe!
I mrake my spritz cookies with cream cheese and lemon extract or powdered lemon peel!! Then I put a small dollop of raspberry jam in the middle of the wreath shape. Delicious!!
Love Spritz, they're one of my favorites to make and give as gifts. I have my Mom's cookie press from the '50's and my favorite disc to use is the little gingerbread man.
I have colored a little dough red and piped it with uncolored dough using a tip that makes the cookies look like variegated poinsettias. Merry Christmas!
My favorite too! I do half batter almond extract and half vanilla. My mom had the old metal copper press. I would love to see you do more of these retro type holiday cookies, like the ones from the Betty Crocker Cooky Book from the 60's. Happy holidays to you and your family!
My absolute favorite holiday cookie. Our sitter would make these and other cookies every years for Christmas, they were the best cookies, ever. My siblings still talk about them decades later. Thanks for the video, and Merry Christmas to you and your lovely family.
Love! Love! Love! ❤️ My Auntie made these every year and it brings back such fond memories. Thanks John! 🤗❤️ I just moved close to my grandsons and this is the first Christmas that we are close and everything is unpacked. I’m going to get out my spritz maker and make some memories with my grandsons. 😁🎄🎅🏼
I no longer have a cookie press. So I rolled them in a ball and smushed them down with the bottom of a cup. Have to get another cookie press. But they turned out great. My fav cookies 💕💗💞
Sometimes I will make little sandwich cookies with them; little hearts or other shapes that work well; a little raspberry or apricot jam or Nutella in between, then sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar; yummy!
I adore you! I bet you are a fun Dad. I imagine as your kids grow they will love to spend time in the kitchen with you and your partner too. Have a fabulous Christmas holiday.
i’m so happy i finally know how to use a cookie press! my grandmother gifted me hers i believe she got it in the 50s, it’s the older crank version but i’m so excited to try this out for the holidays!!!
Used to make these with my mom every year for Christmas. She gave me her cookie press a few months ago and now there's this video so I guess this means I have to make some spritz cookies!
My MIL would make railroad tracks with the disc that has a thin line with a straight edge and a zig-zag edge. She would make long straps, sprinkle them with decorations and then bake. When they were ready they would be broken in to small cookie size pieces. To this day, my husband and I are 64, we still make them using his mom's hand cranked cookie press.
I make an eggnog version of spritz cookies that are just delicious! Every year I make Christmas trees with a glaze and sprinkles, wreaths and flowers with candied cherries, and candy canes dipped in chocolate with chocolate sprinkles. The candy canes are always the first ones gone.
Since I was raised with swedish traditions which spritz cookies is part of those traditions. My mom would make 3 batches green red and white. She would let us roll them and make wreaths and candy canes
I almost didn’t watch because my cookie press is in storage in Colorado and I am in France. However, so glad I did! I will try with my piping tips-that I did bring-and use the sprinkles a friend brought me from NYC. Oh the joys of baking treats from my past in France.
This year I decided to give out cookies to friends. I tell everyone I give them to that they are your recipes. Your sugar cookie recipe has become a tradition in my house.
This channel is so awesome. I don’t make 99% of the recipes and yet I still love tuning in. Brightens my day instantly when I see a new vid in my inbox. You have a gift, John. Thanks!
We have this exact cookie press and tried a different recipe from yours. The cookies were way too sticky and wouldn't come out clean from the gun. I'm going to try your recipe this time and am guessing I'll have better results! EDIT: the recipe worked great. The dough came out of the gun clean every single click. Thank you!
Literally was saying I wish John would make a spritz cookie recipe video and ten seconds later voilà I received the notification!! Thank you so much these look amazing and can’t wait to try them with my vintage cookie press!! Happy holidays everyone!! 🎄
Spritzkuchen. One of our family traditions. Thank you for helping to spread the word. Easy delicious little cookies! Now if you make kringla I’ll be in heaven! My favorite shape is round. Hubby like the Christmas tree.
These look entirely different from the ones we make in Germany, but also so, so delicious... and beautiful too! 🎄🤶🎄 Thank so much you for ALL your great videos and recipes! 🙏🍀
@@Ms7of8 Hi, thanks for your answer - and your question! I hope I‘ll be able to to describe the differences in a way that will help you to get the right picture... which includes using the right vocabulary... Hope I will manage... When we make „Spritzgebäck“ we usually use either a piping bag (the dough has to be a little softer) or - more old old-fashioned - a grinding machine with a special attachment for spritz cookies (you‘d want a more solid dough for that one). My mother‘s recipe which I usually use is well adjusted for these machines. The typical German shapes for spritz are horse shoes, rings, stick-shapes or S-shapes. When you use a grinding machine you form the cookies (we call them „Plätzchen“ in contrast to all-year cookies which would be „Kekse“) in one hand while using the other one to work the machine. There are recipes with or without nuts (my mother‘s uses ground hazelnuts), even some with marzipan or nougat, with or without chocolate glaze. We usually don‘t use food coloring or extra toppings, but the „modern bakers“ are open to many variations! So the basic recipe on this video is indeed similar to several of the various recipes we know in Germany. The difference is mainly in the shapes and little extras. I‘m a rather nostalgic person, so I love to use my late mother‘s recipe. She always started the Christmas baking season with it, and I love to follow that tradition... All the best, take care, and enjoy this wonderful season! 🎄🍀🎄
@@hrbooksmusic7878 Thank you for your in-depth reply and for edifying me in the traditional ways to make these cookies. How wonderful you still have your late mom's utensil to make them. Your English and articulation are beautiful -- thanks again. Have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!🌲✌🕉
@@mamziemay1575 Thank you so much for your kind words! Strange as it may sound, coming from a person I do not even know (and I‘m sure you must be a great person!) they mean even more to me!!! All the best to you and your family! 🍀🍀🍀 Enjoy this wonderful time! 🎄🎄🎄 (May I ask you whether you are American...?)
@@hrbooksmusic7878 You are so sweet! Yes, I am from the States. The time and place where I grew up, we had many immigrants from Europe and Eastern Europe. One of the bakeries in my neighborhood was German. After Sunday mass, my mom would take us to the German bakery and let us select any, one only, cookie we would like. It was very special because my parents were very strict with sweets. I always chose the spritz (Spritzgebäck) cookies. Other than the holidays, when the spritz cookies would look more like the ones John makes (and I make those too with my press!) the cookies appeared to be piped, not from a press. There was a choice of plain or ones with chocolate sprinkles. Thanks again for your description of the authentic Spritzgebäck cookies. May you have a happy and blessed Holiday!
The cookies look aesthetically pleasing... Would love to have some but I haven't seen anything similar to the cookie press you are using..! Great efforts 🌟
I so enjoy cooking love baking with love and giving to everyone throughout the year and iv not been able to for while I hope to have a awesome kitchen someday and cook a lot of love thanks I made these many times!🌸✨🙏🤗☕️
I have been making a recipe from a magazine I found years ago. I use a jam and chocolate mix to sandwich them together. My recipe uses blanched almonds. They are so yummy and my favorite cookies. Thanks for sharing. I may try some of your ideas. I do like to add these cookies to neighbor cookie boxes. And I love them in my cookie jar too. Happy Holidays!
Thank you for the inspiration. I will finally break out my cookie press that hasn't seen the light of day for at least 5 years! Also, the video of your adorable boys making the banana muffins is cuteness overload!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your lovely family! 🎄
My mom always made these for christmas! Your trees look almost exactly like hers! Same sprinkles, except ours are waaaaaayyyyy more green! I'm making mine right now!
Spritz are one of my favorite cookies too. I made your pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving and now I have a request to make it again for Christmas. It is very yummy!!
I always do that with vanilla, but never with flour or sugar and I'm pretty good at estimates. I'm also pretty bad at dumping too much into the bowl if not measured.
Hi John 👋, thank you so much for the cookie inspiration and other baking dreams! I truly enjoy watching and learning from your channel, plus I'm sure my kids will love the outcome!
I made spritz cookies with my mother when I was very young - more than 50 years ago. In college, I bought myself a real cookie press, made of metal and with a screw on one end that you twist to extrude the dough. I hate those plastic ones that have a trigger that clicks, since they don’t give you precise control over how much dough you extrude. Each year I make little green Christmas trees with multicolored nonpareils, which I sometimes dip very lightly in a white frosting glaze to make them look snow-covered. I also always make wreaths with a quarter of a candied cherry in the center; I’ll make half green with a red cherry in the center and half red with a green cherry. I’ll usually make at least one other color, like blue stars or yellow pinwheels. I have a flat saw-tooth plate for my press that pipes out a flat (with ridges) ribbon of dough, and I’ll make a homemade version of Fig Newtons with it. You pipe out several long, flat ribbons parallel to each other on a cookie sheet, then you place a thin strip of some sort of fruit filling down the center of each one. I’ll make holiday flavors like cranberry-date or orange-raisin for my filling. You then top each ribbon of dough with a matching ribbon, pressing down the sides of each one to seal them. Once baked, slice them into little bars.
Thanks John for sharing the recipe. The cookies look so gooood…. I will try this spritz recipe. I had tried a few recipes and has not been so successful.

Woah! That's incredible. Are they made of metal to last that long?
They’re easy to make, and nice that they’re bite sized.
I love the way stuff was made before, it was made to last not get replaced. I had several vintage appliances including a hand-crank ice cream machine that was a wooden bucket on the outside, unfortunately when my dad passed away when I was younger a lot of that stuff was lost.

1 teas of orange ( fine)
2 & 1/2 c flour
1/2 teas salt

These look entirely different from the ones we make in Germany, but also so, so delicious... and beautiful too! 🎄🤶🎄
Thank so much you for ALL your great videos and recipes! 🙏🍀
Hi, I'm curious, how do they look different? Do you feel the basic recipe on this video is similar to yours in Germany? Thanks much : )

Hi, thanks for your answer - and your question!

Thank you so much for your kind words! Strange as it may sound, coming from a person I do not even know (and I‘m sure you must be a great person!) they mean even more to me!!!
All the best to you and your family! 🍀🍀🍀 Enjoy this wonderful time! 🎄🎄🎄
(May I ask you whether you are American...?)
I'll have to try this recipe. I gave up on spritz long ago as I couldn't get them to stick to the pan. Time to try again.
Hello how are you doing
Oh wow I made these over the holidays and they were so perfect and delicious

Thank you for the inspiration. I will finally break out my cookie press that hasn't seen the light of day for at least 5 years! Also, the video of your adorable boys making the banana muffins is cuteness overload!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your lovely family! 🎄

Such a nostalgic classic cookie from childhood! I've always wanted a Spritz cookie press, will make due with my star piping tips until then.
My mom always made these for christmas! Your trees look almost exactly like hers! Same sprinkles, except ours are waaaaaayyyyy more green! I'm making mine right now!
This inspired me to dig out my moms old 1960s cookie press……Her recipe is very similar to yours but uses regular salted butter and has no added salt.
Thank you for sharing . The recipe for Spritz cookies . Looks so yummy and pretty . Have a great evening .
Besides looking forward to making these cookies myself, I really appreciate letting us know what products you used and where I can find them.
Every cookie is awesome and mouth-watering.
My grandmother used to make spritz cookies !
Spritz are one of my favorite cookies too. I made your pumpkin cheesecake for Thanksgiving and now I have a request to make it again for Christmas. It is very yummy!!
Anyone else amazed to see him adding flour and vanilla etc without measuring? Just dumping it out of the canister?!
Yup. Into the bowl over the scale. Not surprising, but a bit odd considering that it's John
I always do that with vanilla, but never with flour or sugar and I'm pretty good at estimates. I'm also pretty bad at dumping too much into the bowl if not measured.
Cookie gift’s 🍪 🎁 are the best! John, thanks for sharing this recipe. :) Merry Christmas.
