I don't think Luke was changed but his situations changed. Even the Cassadine saga didn't keep him from loving and reuniting with Laura. Her illness was written in among other silly things the writers did so Laura was gone. Luke did what he had to do under different circumstances, from fighting off Stefan, killing Frank Smith, letting Stavros fall into the pit, framing helena for Catherine Bell's apparent murder, shooting Helena on the Yacht, selling off of Stefan's 200 Million overseas charities, it was always a clever and funny Luke with the dark elm street and rape haunting him as well as obsession with his love for Laura. Luke never changed. Geary made sure of that.
No, Luke did change. He seemed angry and drank a lot. Geary wanted Luke and Laura to come to an end so they gave him his way. But quite frankly, Genie was what made him and how they became known. @gerardfonz

He wanted to take Luke in a different dark direction and he knew the fans would have insisted that Luke and Laura be together if she was on the show. JFP seemed to think TG was the whole show and gave him what he wanted. A dark, drunk Luke who did not even resemble the Luke we knew here in 1981. The worst rewrites were the addition of an affair with Holly Scorpio which produced a son after Laura was pregnant with Lucky. Not just a slap in Laura's face but also to Robert. I'm sorry but the Luke portrayed here and in 1983 and 1984 would have never cheated on Laura.
When Luke went to the waterfront and talked to Scorpio, I wound up crying, first Scorpio brought up Riley, then he confessed that he was happy not to leave Port Charles. This is the closest thing to a brother Luke has. It was a beautiful moment: "No matter where your future takes you, no matter what kind of trouble that Aussie grin get you in , if you need help and you don't reach out I will hate you". For Luke, that is the most important speech he's ever made to another man. This is his brother from another mother.
And speaking of reaching out, right now in current GH summer 2020, Robert has reached out to Luke to help him find out the truth about Holly. So that promise still holds.

Even back then though Luke did not want to settle down with a job, a house, and a little wife with kids. He should have let Laura be since that is how he really felt deep down. That is the Luke that came out later and broke our Angel's heart.
