This is why lots of people love a 223 bolt gun for a trainer... They shoot great and the cartridge especially in a good bolt gun is boringly accurate. I love this series of you pulling out the old guns and doing some plinking with them. Really great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Do you think that's why the military uses the 5.56? Lightweight very little kick and as stated boringly accurate. Keep in mind many people joining the military have never shot anything in their life.

Loving the .223 videos for your grandpas bolt action rifle. I started loading for 6.5 Creedmoor right off the bat and everything costs so much more. I eventually bought a Savage Predator in .223 and now learning all the variations and subtle changes that affect accuracy isn’t costing me a ton of money to figure out. It’s going to be a great series. And I’m with the guy who wrote in saying who cares about the SD numbers when your shooting dime size holes? Grandpas old rifle is shooting lights out.

Another great video. I'd love to see exact same loads built with a variety of dies. That is a rock solid baseline. I haven't used a lee neck sizer in ages, but I put together a bunch of great hunting loads in my old '06 with one back in the day. Maybe I need to pull out some old rifles outta my safe.
Biggest issue with the lee neck sizer is the reliance on good brass annealing. Once the cases get a bit harder, you will have issues getting proper neck tension. Also you really need to work that handle to make sure you get a good squeeze. Other then that, they are excelent on managing runout and create extremely even necks.
@@jmkhenka Back then I never did any annealing, not sure I even knew it existed in the reloading world. I would load until the shoulder pushed forward enough for hard chambering. Later I got a full length sizing die, but back then everything was just so much cheaper than today that brass life was not a major concern.

Die tests seem to be hit and miss with many people getting different results from various dies but it's still always interesting to watch. If you ever get the time, what I'd love to see even more is a press comparison between your T7 and the Rebel, and perhaps even 1-2 more if you felt like throwing them in the mix. Although it seems like your T7 is probably more capable then most people can shoot. So that may throw the reasoning of buying a tight single stage press out the window for most of us.
While not an amazing sd, the 10 shot group of h335 at 27.0 is hard to argue with. 2 things i would try. Magnum primer helped sd and es with ball powders for me. And although it only has 2 firings maybe anneal the brass? Also looks like cartridges seated a little stiffly. Perhaps full length size to bump the shoulder.
Now I'm off work and really watching close that thing is a tack driver. Nice. You should try the big bore ar. Lots of fun. Great videos always looking forward to the next one
Hell with the SD's.....look at those groups! Thats insane. I've had 3 boxes of these bullets sitting on my reloading bench for a year......i think they're next.
I wish my Grandpa had left notes as detailed as yours did. All the info I have on his 53gr 22-250 load is just from his occasional comments and from the components I found in the basement. So far I only know he filled the case with one of the IMR powders he had and shoved a Hornady 53gr match hp on top
I used a Lee collet die on a T-7 press for years and it worked great. The key to the collet die on any press is to get it adjusted just right. Once you get it adjusted, it's magic.
Shannon the way you feel about this rifle is exactly the same I feel about my Krieger JRB clone build. I freaking love shooting it it’s just easy to make small groups with.
I got a couple of those dies in different calibers, it helps to put a dab of grease on the contact areas of the collet. But with that weight bullet, I'd definitely suggest h322. That's where it shines is with light bullets.
I love my .223 bolt gun, one of the Cabela's special Savage Model 12 FV's. It has a 9" twist, and with 68 grain Hornady HPBT Match bullets and Reloder 15, I can choose where on a 3" dueling tree plate I need to put the bullet to get the plate to swing around at 300 yards. 223 bolt guns are just so easy to shoot.
I commented on your last installment of the 223 load development, in regards to how well handloaded 68gr HPBT's shoot in my Savage 16 in 223 w/1:9" twist 22" bbl. What I didn't mention was how well it shoots factory loaded 40gr Vmax bullets, from both Hornady and Federal... Usually 1" groups if I do my part, with factory ammo !
Must be some kind of magic with the Hornady 68gr hpbt & 1in 9 twist. I have a TC Venture it is so accurate with that bullet I don't even mess around much with other loads anymore. It hammers coyotes, fox & shoots the nicest 5 shot groups @ 100yds I ever seen. I have the best shooting with Hodgen LVR close to max.
I have a vls in 243. Tac driver! I swapped the stock with a hs prescion and Timney trigger. My LTR in 223 loves 27 grains of benchmark with 40 grain Noslers and 60 grain vmax with 25.2 grains of h4895 and 25 grains of benchmark. The loads will shoot .2” at 200 yards when I do my part.
I use an 8 twist Sako 223 Johnny and it loves the 40 Vmax although i have to seat mine almost 100 thou smaller 👍but ye cracking results there my friend.
At the State Fair of Texas, the second group would win you a prize for shooting out the bullseye in the air gun gallery. Of course, the air rifles they use don't use 3600fos projectiles.
With that light of a bullet you could probably get some interesting results with N130 or even N120. The accuracy was outstanding already, so I couldn't blame you for not changing anything.

That first group of H335 without the cold bore shot would of been a dream group! This is why I want to pick up one of these older .223 Remington 700. I have one in .308PSS and would like to get my wife a .223 to shoot along with me. That's why I was asking if you still had the Varmint Synthetic stock. They make for great stocks!
Hey mate, I've been trying to get a good load in my tikka .223. Where I'm at is 10 shot group all exactly in a horizontal line about 2 inches across. It was a little windy but not that bad. Would you stick to that powder charge and tweak the seating depth next? Thanks, great shooting by the way
I bought a bunch of h335 when the powder shortages began. I have had good luck in .223 with it when running heavier projectiles out of 1:8 twist barrels. My experience with it is that it burns very dirty though
I load for a bunch of varmint calibers and I use a lot of the old standard powders including H335 & BLC-2 in the .204 & .223, but give IMR4198 a try. Near max in my Browning it shoots tiny bug holes with the 50gr. VMax's......and btw, the VMax's are about all I use anymore for varmints.......they're cheap, plentiful, and accurate. That's coming from a huge old school 1980's Sierra fan to lol
I have a few 500 count boxes of VMAX 40gr. Gonna start working up some loads. I had some loaded with 27gr of BLC2 just to screw around with and they shot great.

Recently found some 40gr. v-max to load in my 221 fireball with 22 inch barrel 1x14 twist. Think I will try some LiL Gun, since that is what I have. I have a 22 Cheetah with 1x16 twist 27 inch barrel. Might be fun to see how fast these will go before they start leaking lead.
I would love to see you do a light bullet shootout. I know that you typically do heavy for caliber, but some light weight lasers! Or something for a single shot “Thompson contender” stuff.
I would try accurate 2230, That powder has worked excellent for me. Also annealing your brass, and seating depth. Are about your best to Avenues to increase accuracy.
What a sweet rifle! I've tried the 40 grain Vmax in .22-250, but didn't have great luck, but I also didn't have many powder options. That gun had a 1 in 14 twist; I have since sold it and got a new rifle in .22-250 with a 1 in 12 twist, so I doubt it will like the 40 grain bullets. Love this bolt action stuff. One question I have is: why does standard deviation matter if you're shooting good groups? Thanks for the video.
If you target shoot for fun at 100 yrds it doesn't matter much.If you are shooting at various distances especially longer ranges with rounds with a high SD they will not drop consistantly and you will string your groups vertically due to some bullets going faster and some going slower. Less sd = the potential for smaller groups.

I loaded 40gr VMAX for my early dpms 1:9 stainless ar and with 27gr of h335 i was getting 3380-3444fps and it shot a 5 shot group in a cloverleaf. It seems like this is a knockout load. The only reason i stayed with the imr4198 is because i was getting 3700 fps and it was only a marginally bigger group
Imr 4198 is extruded i started at 21 and ended at 23.3 the extreme spread was VERY good with the imr. Looking back at my notes (i take pics of my notes on my phone too organize a quick search digital copy on my phone) I think that's another reason i settled on the IMR it's been Nailer on groundhogs for me. I'll leave it at that hahaha
Another interesting note! A famous old man said : for a short bullet , the depth of sitting the bullet should be .030 less of the bullet diameter .🤔 in other words if you sit any short .308 bullet , make sure , bullet is only .278 deep 👍
Every time I shoot my grandfather's recipes they never seem to disappoint. Recently picked up a couple boxes of 70 grain speer semi spitzer soft points because they were cheap as hell for a heavy bullet out of my AR 10.5 pistol. Haven't shot them yet but due to the bullet ogive I had to seat them at 2.140. really interesting and I'm curious how they are going to shoot.
That collet die seems to me is just like a factory crimp die, with a mandrel (depriming pin). I bet only difference is the crimping collar isn't tapered, rather is just measured to match the mandrel in order to touch the right part of the case mouth.
Your velocity spread with H335 is not atypical; I get around 100+fps spread when shooting the 53vmax w/ H335. TAC gives similar accuracy and ~50fps spread. H4895 gives me ~10fps delta and 1/2” accuracy. Anneal your brass, and don’t be afraid to put force on the press handle when collet sizing. Let’s see more bolt gun 223 👍
I would try some AA 2015 with that 40gr Hornady. Just about the right burn rate with that weight. It's a small grained powder & measures well. One of my Favorites.
i shoot a savage model 12 using hornady 75 grain bthp ,using h335 at 23 grains cant get the group to tighten up, i mean that all are kill shots for deer but like a closer group have any ideas by the way love yo videos and hello from sweet home al. ps i zero at 181 yds

The federal 205 primer is technically a magnum primer.

I would use bench rest primer and ram tac powder get as close to a compressed load as possible

I have always found the V Max extremely accurate in any caliber or bullet weight. Out performs match grade projectiles.

I struggled with the Lee collet die. Your results make me want to give it another chance
I use it to straighten necks, run it through the full length, then use a separate expander. Its been working great.

Johnnie, Creedmore Sports has a upgrade kit for that Turret press that gets rid of that slop. Really nice upgrade for that press.

Cheaper bullets. Smaller/cheaper powder charges. Barrel doesn't heat up too fast.

Damn. Now I want to put this projectile in an 18" spr. See how fast and accurate I can get it before blowing something up.

Can you take a look at the hornady 35 grain NTX? I've had great luck with it in my 22-250 with benchmark but i think it'll do real well in the .223

Little left field but I bet Ramshot X-Terminator would give you quite a good show for velocity with that bullet. Not seen you use their powder much.

I've always had great luck with 27 grns Win. 748, CCI 400s, and the 53grn Hornady match bullets...
Man that gun is a shooter. How does it do with factory hunting loads?
Every time I shoot my grandfather's recipes they never seem to disappoint. Recently picked up a couple boxes of 70 grain speer semi spitzer soft points because they were cheap as hell for a heavy bullet out of my AR 10.5 pistol. Haven't shot them yet but due to the bullet ogive I had to seat them at 2.140. really interesting and I'm curious how they are going to shoot.

I watched the whole vid ( actually both on this gun) what is the barrel length again ?
That collet die seems to me is just like a factory crimp die, with a mandrel (depriming pin). I bet only difference is the crimping collar isn't tapered, rather is just measured to match the mandrel in order to touch the right part of the case mouth.

The 53 grain vmax was specifically designed for the 223.

Your velocity spread with H335 is not atypical; I get around 100+fps spread when shooting the 53vmax w/ H335. TAC gives similar accuracy and ~50fps spread. H4895 gives me ~10fps delta and 1/2” accuracy. Anneal your brass, and don’t be afraid to put force on the press handle when collet sizing. Let’s see more bolt gun 223 👍

Who cares about SD numbers when the groups look that good? What is a fluctuation in velocity matter if they’re all going through the same hole
I would try some AA 2015 with that 40gr Hornady. Just about the right burn rate with that weight. It's a small grained powder & measures well. One of my Favorites.
Which Boyd's stock does it have on it?
Stretch it to 2-300 yds. That first group shows SD means d..k. Great shooting iron there.
Are those airgun pellets?

i shoot a savage model 12 using hornady 75 grain bthp ,using h335 at 23 grains cant get the group to tighten up, i mean that all are kill shots for deer but like a closer group have any ideas by the way love yo videos and hello from sweet home al. ps i zero at 181 yds

For what it’s worth I use CFE223 exclusively in my 223. As a prairie dog hunter it’s not unusual for me to shoot 1500 rounds a years.
