  • Here's the fantastic Spinners performing live Then Came You in 1976, with a viviacious young lady who sang background The Spinners, and they do the bump dance.
    The Spinners rate as one of the most fantastic groups along with The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Dramatics, The OJays, The Stylistics, The Whispers, The Intruders, Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, and The Delfonics. They were apart of the golden age of classic soul groups who mesmirized us with their dances, energy, and love songs.
    It's Ashame, Rubberband Man, Mighty Love, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, I'll Be Around, Mighty Love, One of a kind Love Affair, Ghetto Child, Sadie, How Could I Let You Get Away, Then Came You, Games People Play, Love Don't Love NoBody, were among their biggest hits, making them the premier group of the 70's.

    A bit more about the Sweethearts of Sigma: Carla Benson (soprano), Barbara Ingram (mezzo soprano) and Evette Benton (alto) is the definitive line-up, though Harriet Tharpe deputised as mezzo in the late '70s. Carla and Barbara were cousins,. Evette was unrelated, but a lifelong friend of Carla (the very similar surnames are coincidental).

      I heard rumors for a long time, that Barbara Ingram did the background vocals on the Spinners song Games People Play, and it's definitely true about the Major Harris song Love Don't Let Me Wait, that was her doing the lite crying and the moaning on the album version of the song .

    • @bobwalsh172
      @bobwalsh172 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dgray9020 Games People Play featured Evette Benton. It’s a fascinating insight too, because you don’t really hear the alto line in a female trio, so it’s a rare opportunity to hear her voice clearly. The softness and warmth of her tone must have been a big contribution to the overall Sweethearts of Sigma sound.

    • @williamg2552
      @williamg2552 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Carey Conley -Anybody who knows anything about the REAL history of The Spinners , (ALL of it, not just from 1972 onward), knows that Bobby was always the main lead. It's just the Phillippe fans who always try to whitewash and change history to give him more credit than he's due. Like everything changed when HE joined the group. But facts are facts.Thom Bell signed The Spinners , in part because of Bobby's unique phrasing and his smooth tenor voice. Where was Phillippe when Bell first saw the Spinners onstage in Philly in '65 ? Bell had always said that "I'll Be Around" was the HIT. Atlantic went with "How Could I Let You Get Away" instead. The rest is history. The Spinners would have taken off ANYWAY, whether Phillippe came...or had GC stayed, because the group's first two million-sellers were BOTH led by Bobby...as were the fourth and fifth. (Out of the group's six million-selling singles, FOUR of them were led by Bobby. Phillippe only led on TWO) ..and Bobby led on their very FIRST hit back in 1961, "That's What Girls Are Made For"...along with ALL of their Tri-Phi songs and almost all of their Motown stuff. Tom Meros interviewed Henry...and that interview is right here on TH-cam. He confirms that Bobby was ALWAYS the main lead...long before GC , Phillippe, or John Edwards were even THERE. He outta know about the Spinners' history better than you or I ..HE was there from the BEGINNING.

    • @williamg2552
      @williamg2552 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Carey Conley "Booby'' ?? Boy, you really ARE a Phillippe fan .

    • @careyconley4690
      @careyconley4690 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Spinners' "main" history IS from 1972 onward. "That's What Girls Are Made Of" was a MINOR hit and didn't keep them from being the Motown gophers they all said they were for the entire 1960s that followed. So WHAT if Bobby sang lead on that? Who besides you, me and Bobby remembers it? David Ruffin didn't Sing "Dream Come True" for the Temptations, either. Did that somehow make Eddie their "main" lead singer?
      It's also interesting that you've tried to spin my comments (more whitewashing) into some kind of Philippe man crush, when I said that Philippe, Bobby, AND Henry were the lead singers. You've mentioned the songs that Bobby sang lead on, and if I had the space here, I would break down EVERY Spinners hit from that era, big and small, and show you who actually sang the leads. The ONLY hit, for which Bobby sang lead from beginning to end, was "I'll Be Around." What other "main" lead singer could claim that?
      I've already seen the Tom Meros interview. Far as Henry calling Bobby their "main" lead singer, I figured that's just him being modest and honoring his old friend, when Henry sang as many, if not MORE leads than Bobby, ESPECIALLY on the latter Thom Bell albums.
      I understand that Bobby fans like you feel that he didn't get as much credit as he deserved, and maybe he didn't, but this incessant campaigning to re-write history, to try and go back and give him ALL the credit as the "main" lead singer when he wasn't, is creating the same problem in reverse. During the Spinners' classic era, Henry, Philippe, AND Bobby were the lead singers.
