    That was excellent! I am looking forward to your shoot out videos. Great idea! My pursuit of surround sound music came after hearing Dear Mr. Fantasy during the Avengers End Game movie. After finishing the movie I played Dear Mr. Fantasy through Spotify on my home theater and couldn't believe it was even the same song. I felt like it was a steep learning curve trying to get to the point where I could experience albums the way music sounded in movies. This video summed up everything I have learned so far plus some information on formats I didn't know existed. I hope this video helps more people get into this hobby. Still hoping for a surround release of Mr. Fantasy...oh and awesome chair by the way.

      The song gets a discrete surround mix at the end of the movie? That's cool! Like "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel at the end of Wall-E. The shoot outs should be fun.

      I do exactly that with my Oppo 105 and Onkyo preamp - and for the same reason, i.e. Oppo DAC. Both are 7.1 capable although Oppo cannot do 7.1 for anything else than DTS variants. However, for example Tidal stereo upmix to 7.1 by Oppo works surprisingly well, although with large variance. Mconnect app supports lossless Tidal streaming to Oppo "upmixer".

    • @lifeinsurround
      @lifeinsurround  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, any xx5 series have the improved DAC, IIRC. xx3 series are really meant for HDMI or use with an external preamp.

    • @anttipikkusaari4855
      @anttipikkusaari4855 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right! I could swear that Oppo DAC (via analogue 7.1) sounds better that Onkyo 5508's (via HDMI). Then again, many years ago I failed miserably ABX test my wife organised. What's funny is that during the test I was still certain that could hear the difference. The result, however, was total failure: 10 out of 20 correct. Perfect coin toss, that is. But maybe we should repeat the test for the Oppo-Onkyo pair...? Anyway, good luck to your listening tests! ABX is the way to do it, by the way (you don't know when the source truly changes - you only have your ears to rely on).

I saw them twice, at the Palladium in Hollywood in the '90's & also during the 3D tour at the Hollywood Bowl. Another GREAT! Informative review although I must admit I am still not convinced that 9.1 and 11.1 sourced material is actually out there and I do not count Dolby Atmos has an extra channel either because it’s only metadata and nothing more than a synthetic channel a bit like the same sort of thing that Creative Labs were doing with environmental sounds for games with their so-called EAX system.
    Dolby have never really impressed me that much not even with their so-called NR they put on cassette decks years ago and you were far better without it if you wanted to hear the clarity and more in a recording. DTS in most cases is more superior.
    Those Dolby Surround CD’s you were on about I remember Isao Tomita releasing his back catalogue with the format and in all honesty, it was a farce. You could just as easily use any CD and play it back with Prologic XX or even in 7 Channel Stereo and get the same results and in the case of his CD’s even better results because they were never right. I even got better results with the CD’s that were put out before they were flooded onto the market. That is one of the formats I would not bother with though I have not heard anything else done in them apart from Tomita’s albums. I love the two quad albums of his that Dutton Vocalion put out last year or the year before.
    Those DTS CD’s I thought were quite good because they were like an SACD where you just put them on and play them without having to go through menu setups and so on like you do with DVD & Blu Ray. I only ever had one of them and it was On Air by Alan Parsons and that was very pleasing to my ears.
    I do actually favour SACD for that convenient reason because it’s just like a CD that you stick on and play without all that palaver so to speak. Though of course I am open to all formats when it comes to surround and you are dead right, they all have good and bad about them all and it is really down to how well the engineer has done the mix at the end of the day. I myself only use Direct and avoid DSP’s cause I like to hear what the engineer intended to do with the mix.
    By the way I have not got that Kraftwerk one you had. I do have their Minimum Maximum live concert DVD and that is quite mind blowing in surround too. I will have to get that one you have. I am pretty sure all the others you have are GREAT! Too and good recommendations.

    • @lifeinsurround
      @lifeinsurround  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On Air is an excellent DTS CD. I love the Christopher Cross track. If I understand correctly, 9.1, 11.1, etc. refers to the number of AVR channels will be utilized on playback in direct mode. It's not so much an indicator of source channels. Though I can tell you, particularly with some of the more meticulous Auro-3D recordings, that they actually set up mics in a 3D configuration and attempt to mix in a way that replicates the space as closely as possible. Like 2L. Dazzling stuff.

    Great video. I have a lot of SACD titles that I enjoy, but I heard that the downside has to do with the DAC implementation. You have to use an old 1999 era Sony DAC to decrypt the format, because that’s the chip where the decryption key resides. Another analog to digital and DAC is then required to get the signal to output. I think I heard that in a video from Paul McGowan of PS Audio.

    • @lifeinsurround
      @lifeinsurround  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @patbarr1351
      @patbarr1351 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Paul may have been referring to DSD from an SACD. You don't necessarily need that to get excellent sound as long as you have an SACD capable player that supports multiple channels which, sadly, are rare in 2021.

Only the multi-channel layer is actually high resolution(sort of-48Khz/24-bit) and the stereo tracks are just either Dolby Digital or DTS. Worst formats? Where's Dual Disc?

Anyways my Santana “Abraxas“, Steve Miller “Fly Like an Eagle” and Paul McCartney “Band On The Run” are spectacular sounding, way better than any DolbyDigital AC3(24/48) that I’ve ever heard and competitive with DVD-A, SACD, BD, etc. What struck me on these is the smoothness as if it’s actually capturing the magic of vinyl.

    Solid video. I have a couple of those surround CDs (classical titles I think) you covered at the beginning, I'm not sure I've tried setting the receiver to dolby with them.
    I've been pleasantly surprised with the few DTS-CDs I have. The mixes on these releases tend to favor having some elements discretely located in the rear, but not usually a lot of instrumentation through the whole song. I suspect it's a compression strategy to mask the fact it's lower bitrate.
