  • The Outfoxies is an obscure and mostly unknown Japanese arcade game. Beating Nintendo to the punch 5 years early, Namco released a 2D fighter that looks and feels like a 2D Super Smash Bros. Why is it so unknown? Why did it never see a console release? Is Super Smash Bros. a rip-off?

    And this is why I keep telling everyone (before I watched this video), that Smash bros. itself isn't a unique game. The concept and some mechanics behind it are similar to that of Outfoxies. All Stars isn't the best game, but it's unfair to say that Sony ripped off Nintendo when in actuality, Nintendo kind of ripped off Namco.

    • @psychwardsandSCENE
      @psychwardsandSCENE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Gaming With Balance wrong. all stars is a smash clone, and was created and developed as one. smash bros is a game that took light inspiration from another game, and was developed as its own game.

      +Steve Compton Also Wrong, Smash Bros. began development without any Nintendo characters, items, complex stages, etc. It began as a single platform with a static background, and the idea that a fighting game can A) Consist of combos you create, and B) Do not need to be determined by a life bar. Later in development, they MAY have taken inspiration from outfoxies in small areas such as items, but the concept is far from inspired by it. The stages were made the way they are to take advantage of the percentage system, and offer more interesting ways to knock your opponent off the screen. it was all built around the percentage mechanic based on what seemed like the most fun. I find it highly unlikely that this game had any significant impact on the development of SSB

  • @ClexYoshi

    I played this at galloping Ghost, and... I can say with confidence that The Outfoxies had about as much influence on Masahiro Sakurai in his prototyping of Dragon King. The man has said himself that he once ruined a man's date by utterly destroying him in the King of Fighters, and the guilt of how that felt drove him to make a fighting game with the same simple control principles he had worked on with his latest Kirby project. that's when Dragon King started taking shape as a project for the Super FX chip at Hal Labs, and just... took a while to get there thanks to having his attention split to Kirby Air Ride.
    Sakurai-san IS a worldly individual who plays a metric ton of video games, and as I alluded to in my anecdote, he would indeed frequent arcades after work. there's a chance that he could have tried the Outfoxies. That being said, no stage in Super Smash Bros. on N64 is anywhere near as dynamic as the stages in Outfoxies, and it's not like Namco invented random weapon spawns for varying effectiveness around a sprawling arena.

    • @rpgfanatic9719
      @rpgfanatic9719 ปีที่แล้ว

      Outfoxies did so invent random weapon spawns in a 2D platformer arena fighter, therefore smash is a total ripoff whether it was actually inspired or not, there's lots taken from here, including dynamic arenas, smash's levels being not as dynamic just means sakurai is less creative.

    • @ClexYoshi

      @@rpgfanatic9719 Please do not strawman my words; finding inspiration in your peers is a wonderful way to craft games. Heck, Ken Lobb (as stated in the documentary 'Fight On: The Killer Instinct Story' by Esteban Martinez) clearly stated that playing World Heroes and Fatal Fury Special were the two inspirations for Auto-Doubles and Ultra Combos.
      is Killer instinct a ripoff of Fatal Fury? HELL NO! it's it's own thing and takes inspiration from what our peers have built upon!

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rpgfanatic9719 It's not a total ripoff when Super Smash Bros. had its own unique style. For one characters in Super Smash Bros. actually does fight whereas in the Outfoxies they are just merely running and shooting at one another. Outfoxies is merely a 2D arena shooter rather than a 2D arena fighter. Even the final boss in the Outfoxies didn't do much but run and shoot, he used his wife and helicopter as weapons. The concept of both are similar but the more I play the Outfoxies, the less in-dept it was. Sure you do run and use hazards to your advantage in the Outfoxies but the characters in that doesn't fight with some (like John Smith) merely just pushing their opponent rather than hitting them, heck not a single one had hit each other even once and they rely on weapons to do the damage whereas with Smash Bros. you actually do had to fight and each character had their own unique moves without relying on weapons or hazards. Like what Nintendo plan from the get-go, Dragon King: The Fighting Game was just that a fighting game which used similar 2D arena like the Outfoxies but it doesn't directly copies the Outfoxies. Even if Smash Bros. had character who just shoot like Fox McCloud and Samus Aran, those characters also had moveset where they physically hit their opponents as well.

    • @rpgfanatic9719
      @rpgfanatic9719 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VOAN Outfoxies doesn't just have guns, it has melee weapons such as swords, and you can fight with fists if you don't have a weapon. Smash isn't a deep
      game in the first place. You argue they are not the same because smash has slightly more involved melee combat. Talk about straw manning, you didn't tackle any of my arguments. As far as arena fighters go, smash is one of the least innovative, taking everything from this game and the 2D beatem ups before it. For comparisons sake, dissidia is a far more unique arena fighter. It has character customization that smash completely ripped off in such a bad way and a focus on aerial combat and terrain mobility that isn't seen anywhere in arena fighters ontop of the bravery system and EX system.

    Why dont games like this from Namco or other game companies for that matter get re-released on retro game packs for current gen systems? I mean I dont really need yet another compilation pack of the same old standard Namco games (Pac-Man, Galaga, etc...) I would be more encouraged to buy an arcade classics pak if it more of Namco/Sega/etc more modern-ish retro games like Rad Mobile, Dirt Dash, this game, Outrunners, Ace Driver, etc...

    You know, with HD _everything_ these days, this could be ported... not directly, you'd probably have to rebuild it from the ground up or something; but now everything could still be pixel-perfect at full zoom-out. If it was on the Switch, the commercial could even say "Imitate the original release by playing in handheld mode," or something. That'd be cute...

    The difference between this and smash bros is that you can actually fall off the stage and it added the percentile system. It also had 4 player battle royale and items that weren't just guns and bazookas but pokeballs, mushrooms, star, etc. The characters were taken from different IPs and all the characters had unique movesets ( like recovery's and special moves). I can't really see why it's the same, perhaps because the stages had platforms? Well, just putting my 2 cents.

      bryanpein You can fall off one of the stages. The similarities is the scale of it, & the fact that they are both Platform fighters, as well as some mechanics. The percentile system, increased number of players, & the fact that its a crossover are the only differences. Most fighting games have different ways of play but are also similar in nature. That's why Outfoxies & Smash are similar. Also, of course Outfoxies & Smash will have differences, because they weren't released in the same era. It's like comparing Street Fighter with King Of Fighters. You understand?

    the only ppl pissed on this thread are nintendo fanboys." oh plz dont compare my golden chalice of a smash brothers game to this 2D prehistoric relic." fuck fanboyism. oh and the original part of Smash bros was NOT percentile damage becuz that just acts as a stamina bar which has been done many times b4. no the original part was the huge stages and items with fighting mixed with platforming. oh wait Outfoxies did it first

    I'll take Outfoxies over Super Smash any day.

    I have to say, the way those twins died was pretty upsetting. Maybe it's because I work with kids, but either way, I'll pass on this one.

      I have to say, grow a pair. Maybe it’s because you have noodle for spine, but either way, no one cares that you’d pass on this one.

    I think you should have used a different game. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a good, fun game that has some unique features that made it different from Super Smash Bros. and that's not a bad thing. It wasn't trying to be Smash Bros., it was its own game.

    There is a rumor that many employees left Namco and went to Nintendo between the release of Outfoxies and Super Smash Bros. Did former Namco developers bring the fighting game idea with them? Who knows?

      Deacon Cole the first Smash was literally just a side project Sakurai did in his spare time. It barely had a budget and it wasn't taken seriously during development since fighting games weren't selling well at the time.

    PlayStation All Stars was inspired by Tekken and Street Fighter and not Smash Bros. Its already made clear if you see the game play of it. At some point it was even inspired by PowerStone.

    And that's why PSASBR is not a copy of smash but smash is copy, even tought if it would be a smash copy, PSASBR would be a coy of a copy wich does not make sense since you cannot copy a copy but you're copiyng the original material so PSASBR would more like a copy of The Outfoxis rather than a copy of Smash....

      And? im using every nintendo fanboy logic they see four players on a platforming scrreen fighting each other and they'll say automaticly that is a smash bros copy.

      Free for all and PVP are one in the same since you're fighting against another player. Nice try.

    Sorry good sir, but I really can't see the game play comparisons, and I doubt active environment really is something worth comparing, is not even a game play element, just level design.

    The title lead me to believe it would talk about the percentage based damage style or the knock-your-foe-off-the-screen way to kill them. Nope it's all about items.

    The best game that emulated Smash Bros. in my opinion (and the only one besides SB that i keep coming back over and over again) is Battle Stadium D.O.N., for PS2 and Gamecube. It has what makes Smash Bros Great: every character has a unique style that suits its personality (as we know from the source material), with a huge variety of moves and combos while make a balanced contend. Battle Stadium as well as Smash Bros., looks like were made by fans with money.

      Correction, Smash Bros emulated it. Lol. Outfoxies was out before Smash.

    It's not a ripoff, Maybe they borrowed alot of ideas from the game. But no way is it a ripoff. There's no such thing as a original ideas anymore.
