  • In this video I review the Insignia 42" Fire TV from Amazon. It's one of the cheapest smart TVs out there with Amazon Fire TV software integrated. How well does it work in terms of response time, picture quality, sound quality, and tuner sensitivity?

Broski.. with this tv, is it true that if the tv isn't connected to wifi than the antennae-channels/tuner becomes useless?
I've read from multiple reviews on the amazon page that (antennae) channels don't ( come in / load in ) if the tv isn't connected to wifi.
It sounds wild, but thats what the reviews are saying, so if you can confirm or deny that, then I'll be willing to buy.

I bought a 32” 720p model about two years ago for $150. It lasted about six months before the backlight went out. Best Buy gave me store credit. By then, the prices had dropped so I went ahead and got the 32” 1080p for $130. This lasted about a year and a half until the backlight also went out last week. I just went ahead and bought an LG.

Hey... Thanks for sharing ur 1st hand experience with this line of TVs... I'm in the market for a new TV but I'm leery about shelling out big bucks for yet another TV and have it "peter out" like all the others have done in less than a year's time. Thankfully most were covered by their manufacturing companies, and some kicked off literally on the day after the included warranty expired. I simply refuse to spend top-doller for a TV, and I've been eyeing this line of TVs, and I, for one, appreciate that you left a brief synopsis on ur experience with this particular line of TVs...
Sorry, I tend to ramble on a bit at times...
Armed with new intel, I do believe that I will be purchasing a unit from this particular line of TVs. Thanks again, my friend. 😉👍

My Girlfriend is using a 42 in Insignia TV(fire TV) and it is working like a charm. Don't participate in the Amazon ecosystem so it is used with a Roku but it is chugging along fine. I have one of these, and I really like that VLC can be installed. A computer with video files can be accessed. I actually access my router with an SSD installed for a budget LAN - it's quite sufficient for me (you need to use SSD because flash drives will error).
The only thing that drives me crazy is programming guide update - it can sometimes be so busy at the worst times; otherwise, the programming guide is excellent.
You can even install video camera apps.
Better with apps than Roku without apps.
BTW, without streaming, it is super fast changing channels (as I recall).

I have not seen you do TV reviews, mainly antennas. That said I have an Insignia TV...but it's a 19-inch not SmartTV which I bought at Best Buy. With a decent indoor antenna, the tuner sensitivity is decent enough on it. Thanks to this review I am thinking about it. For my room where I have a computer that links to the web via wi-fi, but using an ethernet cable from my monopoly cable outlet (TAKES BREATH), the 24-inch set would suffice.

Good review and very informative. I have the 32" model and I love the picture and sound quality, but the app layout and the remote are horrible. Also, I dislike that it's an Amazon product and as such, Alexa and Amazon apps are relentlessly promoted. Other than those issues, it's a decent TV and it pairs well with TH-cam, Tubi, Pluto, and other apps.

I have a 22” Insignia “dumb” tv that I love for my kitchen. It’s actually 1080p, rare for this tiny size and has a surprisingly decent picture, good clarity and clean. I paid only $60, brand new. I believe it was a “deal of the day” at BB. As with all my TVs I have it hooked my rooftop antenna and I get 83 stations, more than my other TVs(78-80 stations) so decent tuner. I also have a Firestick and Roku 4k Express attached. Quite happy for my use case. Also it sounds better than my bigger TVs, it’s not tinny, bright or scratchy, or muffled. Don’t really care about the sound of any tv, I have sound systems on them. My 2nd Insignia. Loved my first, a 39” 1080p tv but that was destroyed when lightning struck my satellite dish back in 2014. Insignia is a fine budget tv in my experience.

The only thing I am sad about with Fire TVs is that Recast will go away I believe sometime in 2026. Aside from that, it is kind of expensive otherwise to convert your whole house to Fire TV dependant on the number of devices. Regardless, I can't recommend Fire TV enough even with those problems. Even for the simple fact that you can watch your recordings outside the home. I don't think any other active model OTA device does that now. I think tablo use to do that, but not anymore.

I don't want a smart tv, but since all tv's now come bundled with all this data collection software there really aren't any good alternatives anymore. I'm curious how well this works as a regular dumb tv if you choose not to connect it to the internet.

  • @sandygenier795

I bought this tv. Took it back 2 days later. I do not have cable just a indoor antenna.
There was no tv guide to tell what show was on that channel I was viewing nor what was coming on next on it was considered a "smart tv". I scanned many times. Sound and picture were not in sync. Constantly had to change the channel then return to it.
I took it back to Best Buy and got a " dumb tv". Problem solved. Channel guide was there and I know which show is on. It is not the best but better than the Smart Fire 43 inch that I had first.

I love my new 50" insignia fire tv. But I am disappointed. Why? The TV is excellent but It has one annoying issue. The tv turns on in the middle of the night. It tuned on at around mid night, 2am 4an and even 4:50am. Different times, at different nights. Ridiculous. I called the insignia manufacturer about this issue. We did some trouble shooting, but they did not have a resolution.🤔
    So what did Lou do.
I had no choice but the think out the box and ordered a power outlet timer. I SET this time to shut down by 11:30pm and set to initiate power at 7am. This was the only way to stop this insignia fire tv from booting up in the middle of the night waking me up. This was hard on me because I lost sleep several nights. I was super sleepy at work since getting this tv. Note: I asked insignia tech support to try and come up with an update to help resolve this issue. LMK if anyone elas has experienced this booting up in the middle of the night.

I have 24" Insignia and hate it. It lags and seems to have to redownload apps I already loaded when I wanted to watch them. The tuner sensitivity is not great and the ads every time you turn on the tv is annoying. Fire aggressively pushes Prime content. I don't like the Fire ecosystem and find Roku much better. I replaced that Fire tv with a cheap Roku Westinghouse and like it much better.

The tv guide never actually populates. If i go to the channel manually it still says program info unavailable so i click left and usually it shows the one show im watching but most are still unknown. Its very frustrating but thats what i get for being a brandwhore.

I really don't like fire tv os (mainly the ads like you mentioned). I much prefer google tv, or samsung. I have a 32" made by toshiba (720p), works fine, and a 4k 43" that has a great picture bang for the buck. The color isn't as good as a good tv, but the 4k content from amazon prime like The Grand Tour, looks $. Toshiba and Insignia are both best buy house brands (Best Buy bought the toshiba name). I am sure them and all amazon brand fire tv's are all made in the same factory in Mexico. I have a non smart insignia, and a toshiba fire tv in my workout room (because my equipment points different directions). The insignia remote (and thus the programed fire stick remote) will power on both tv's in the same room and change channel/volume haha. The toshiba fire tv remote will only work the toshiba.

@@davidgoodnow269 I stopped using Roku's because their built in media player to play local video files is really bad. Android Tvs and Chromecasts have VLC media and that can play local media and connect to network storage (Nvidia Shield). I DVR OTA TV using Kafeine on Linux Mint and then transfer the video files to network storage. Any device on my home network can play the DVR recordings. In a nutshell, Android/google devices can do everything a roku can do and can better adapt to your future needs.
