It's a good idea, after you verify the marks, to turn the crank CCW about 60* to pull all the pistons down from TDC. These are an interference engine meaning if the piston is at TDC and the cam turns while the belt is off, a valve may contact the piston. That will likely bend a valve. Once you have the belt on the cam gears and clamped so the belt will NOT slip, turn the crank back to the TDC mark lines up and install the belt.

Todd, Thanks so much for doing this series of videos on the RX300 Timing Belt and water pump. Very detailed and informative and helping me do my first timing belt job. I'm doing the kit with water pump and cam & crank seals and will do my alternator and power steering belts as my vehicle is bought used and has 125K on the clock. Really appreciate your good work and instruction. What part of country is your slight accent from?

Hi Todd - Quick question. I marked my crankshaft bolt and harmonic pulley with white paint marker prior to cracking the bolt. (My Harbor Freight electric with 230 ft-lbs would not crack it so I did the sketchy bumped starter & breaker bar method. When I put the thing back on, if I impact wrench it to my marks, is that pretty close to 159 ft-lbs spec? I did see a method of using a 2x4 and securing it with bolts from harmonic removal tool to secure from spinning when using traditional torque wrench. (That vid is from !1Auto regarding a Tundra)

hi thanks for posting this video however i have no clue about cars lol - i have a question- about 1996 es300 lexus a mechanic told me that the seal under my timing chain/belt is leaking - he will said he could take it out replace the seal and put it back in - for like 400- and i ask him how much if he replaced the timing belt/chain how much - he said about 1100 so my question is if he is taking the old one out why not just replace it while he has the old one out- and i dont understand why theres a 700 difference to replace the old on verses take it old out and put it back in >>> please let me know- he seems like an honest person but i just dont understand- how much is a new belt.chain>> thank you so much

i think i have the same engine- 1mz-fe 3.0L DOHC with VVT-I. Is this not a interference engine though?

I have 2 1MZ-FE engines. One in a '96 Camry, one in 2000 RX300. My understanding is the older non VVT engines are non-interference, but the newer VVT ones are interference. So in my case I have one of each.
