Only have one lavender but plan on more in the spring. That's a special bird I find very interesting. Very cautious and calculated birds. Seem to have an intelligence not shared with the other birds. Joy to have around.
I am about to inherent a mixed flock from my granny. I believe she has a few ameraucanas. As a researcher by nature, I been looking at all APA and others recognized breeds from abroad, to find the best chicken breeds for my harsh winter and scolding humid summers. This lovely breed keep coming out on top of my top 5 list. Love the fact that the blue pigment is throughout the egg. A big marketing scam many white eggs are dyed brown to fool the costumer into spending more money on what they believe is a better choice. In my research I also learned shell color is not a good determination of a better egg. Since color is based on the genetics of the breed, not on the health of the laying hem or nutrition fact of they feed and or free range diet. Knowing this fact helps along with researching the source of the egg is the best way to buy responsibility. Not only do you get the best product, but you're not rewarding bad companies, it is your buying power, but you need to do the work to insure the company is what they claim. Best to find a local source or raise a few hens if possible. ❤
We have 4, purchased from Cackle Hatchery. 3 are splash-colored, and we were given a bonus that I think is lavender. They're about 9 weeks old, so no blue eggs yet.
