WAYPOINT CLOSE CALL FLIGHT OVER WATER

  • Well ..... I almost put the drone in the water today. This episode are the steps in programing a waypoint flight. What was supposed to be 80 feet above the water ended up at two feet. If the drone hadn't sensed the water as an obstacle and canceled the autonomous flight, it would have gone swimming. You'll see it all here and there are some lessons learned for programming your waypoints.

stumbled across your vid, since we’re both youngsters & i just got my 1st drone 🙈 i gave it a watch..good info & comments, crashing especially in water is my biggest fear .. thanks

Hi Jim, your channel came up on my feed , was a nice watch, great video , that was getting very low, close call, good job your was watching it closely! Liked and dropped you a new sub mate 👌👍

Hi. Thanks for finding my channel. I remember my first experiences flying over water. Give yourself time to gain trust in your drone’s technology. I eased into over the water flying. Had no reason to be in a hurry. Hope you’ll keep an eye on my channel. I’m trying to do more “how to” episodes along with just flying expenses. Safe flights. Keep it fun.

@@MAGNUSDRONES But it was reassuring that it detected the water and stopped.

Yes , got to watch that going to low.
I set mine up to fly from home to a nearby field , then decend to just above the ground and then fly across the field to inspect an intended crop of ginger.
Unfortunately on it's first attempt it would have continued into the ground if I hadn't stopped it.
Apparently waypoints seems designed to follow a flowing path for cinematics turning direct line into a sweeping curve.
    Both vertically and horizontally !
Very fortunate it detected the water in your case.

That’s great information. Thanks! I’m actually planning a flight test at a local park and what you describe helps greatly. Another viewer gave a similar response describing that flowing cinematic path the drone will fly around corners, horizontal or vertical. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment.👍

But that wouldn't explain the issue here would it? All waypoints were quite high.

@geoffj3191 I'd have to watch again however that is what my m4p did after a descent from a safe 20 metres on approach where it should have leveled out at 2 metres and on to the next waypount , also 2 metres. Mine has other issues too such as not responding to descent stick when full forward stick is applied. As well as focus issues.

@@geoffj3191You’re right. I didn’t have any issues on a second flight. But, still unsure.

So if I understand this correctly, the problem with this flight was the gradual descent programmed between waypoints. That gradual descent is not performed on a straight line, but instead on a cinematic curve similar to the path taken between two horizontal waypoints at a fixed altitude. This seems like a dumb ass problem which should be fixed by DJI.

First of all, thank you for subscribing. I hope you find other episodes you enjoy. I admit I tend to make them long but working on that. I can’t be sure but I know I was standing next to my car. Lots of metal to possibly interfere with signal. For your journey considering a drone , there are tons of creators doing unboxing and flight reviews. If you have questions or observations, please comment. I’ll do my best with my opinion and information. Regards.

When using waypoints, the drone passes through each waypoint and makes any turns in a sweeping curve. This means that if youre lowering the altitude to a set height, with another waypoint at that same height further on, instead of reaching the first waypoint and leveling off immediately, it leveles off in a curve that will take it lower than the height of that waypoint before leveling itself off. Likewise on turns. If you have 3 waypoints that form a start point, a second point and the final way point at 90 degrees to that, like a triangle, instead of making a sharp turn at the second waypoint, it will go wide and make the turn much smoother and gradual than an abrupt turn.
Practice this and youll see what I mean. Its easy when you know how these drones turn with waypoints.
    Good luck.

@mikenicholson769 That explains the problem I was having. I had a waypoint at about 330 feet and the next was at about 380 feet then the next one was way down about 250 feet. But after that second waypoint it would always go past 380 feet upward and hit the 393 foot limit and halt the waypoint progress. It was frustrating and I chalked it up as a bug and just lowered all the waypoint altitudes until the problem went away. It would have been nice if it just kept going on the waypoint mission but just not go above the altitude limit. But know that if it hits your altitude limit it will simply stop and hover.

I see what you are looking at. That's actually the distance between waypoints 3 and 4. From way point 3 I climbed to a higher altitude but with no forward movement, so the distance apart laterally was zero. But I appreciate your observation. Thanks for watching and sharing.

It was. Thanks for asking. I did another flight but to keep the episode from being too long I have it for maybe a future post. I’m still suspicious that stand next to my big metal box with wheels may have interfered at a moment in the flight. Only an opinion.

It's important to note that waypoint elevation is set relevant to the takeoff elevation. I don't see how that could have affected your flight unless you changed takeoff points between clips.

@@geoffj3191I know I’ll wait for the home point to be updated before I start any flights. That’s usually just a couple feet
above the ground. I plan to test that at a local park over land and not water. We’ll see how it goes.

    • @geoffj3191
      @geoffj3191 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

OK, I have a new theory. If you look at the actual flight path when you do a waypoint mission, the drone does big sweeping turns , passing through each waypoint but doing big sweeping turns to make all the turns smooth. I think it might do the same thing with height transitions. It passes through the waypoints at the right height but might go significantly under or over the chosen height to smoothly transition them. So, you would need to be aware of this when descending to lower waypoints.
      The user manual says
"The flight route will curve between waypoints, so the aircraft altitude between waypoints may become lower than the altitudes of the waypoints during the flight.
Make sure to to avoid any obstacles below when setting a waypoint"
