Snorkeling with Mola Mola at Alor.
Twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, powerful currents, literally squeezing between the islands of Alor and Pantar, change their direction. Streams of water from the cold depths raise a lot of fish, providing numerous fishermen and schools of dolphins, all exactly on time, as if on schedule. At such moments, the sea in the strait simply boils. At first, absolutely smooth layers of water on the surface begin to rush quickly, then they are layered one on top of another in different directions. The water begins to feel very cold, even sitting in a boat you can freeze - the water temperature can drop to 16*C! With no wind, whitecaps begin to rise, waves directed in different directions simply boil, chaotically rising upwards. Whirlpools appear here and there, sucking surface air into the thickness of the water so that blue funnels are formed, visible several meters deep! Jumping into such water is a real suicide, and our guides from alordreamtrip.com would never allow us to do it - the locals know all the rules! After 10-15 minutes, the elements calm down, the well-fed dolphins and happy fishermen retreat, and it is at this moment, while the water is still quite cold, if you are lucky, you can notice the characteristic fin of the Mola Mola fish, the amazing sunfish, appearing and disappearing from the water! This ancient huge fish is not so rare, but because of its love for cool water, it lives at depth and is usually observed by divers. There are not many places on earth where you can admire and even swim next to it, without special equipment, and one of such places is here - on Alor. Mola Mola is quite timid, you can only get relatively close to it in a boat with the engine turned off, so as not to scare it away. As soon as we approached it, the command was given - “jump in the water!” And we, trembling, burned by unexpectedly cold water, rushed with all our might to meet the sunfish over the bottomless, frightening blue. The fish immediately began to swim away from us, squinting with one eye, as if to say, what kind of daredevils are these, I did not expect! It did not swim away very quickly, but tried as hard as we did - as best it could, with all its might. We swam after it for several minutes, but that was enough to get a good look at it and get a powerful adrenaline rush, uncontrollable joy and euphoria! Yes, such moments are remembered for a lifetime! Thanks to our wonderful guides from alordreamtrip.com for telling us about the opportunity to swim with Mola Mola!
