Why Jesus Told Parables (and How You Can Understand Them)

  • Jesus of Nazareth was a master storyteller, and many of his most well-known teachings were told as parables. But these stories were designed to do much more than simply "teach." Jesus said the parables were designed to both reveal and conceal his message about the arrival of God's Kingdom. In this video, we explore the main themes in Jesus' parables and ask why he used them as the primary vehicle for his message.

Parable = To be Denied access by God.
Bible's First Parable occurs before, you even open the Bible = Father is the one who chooses to whom can understand the Bible CORRECTLY (Small Flock that Father has been assembling for thousands of Years and they are the only ones to learn correctly).
No Human can unless, Father unlocks the human mind in order to do so. Otherwise, false learning and false teaching will come forth which has been done for thousands of years and Truth is almost gone from the Earth.
Almost everyone on Earth is not Allowed by Father. His small flock are in the millions on Earth right now and spread across the globe and their numbers are getting smaller while, almost all 8 Billion on Earth are Satan's Large flock and never knowing that they are be they a member to a Church or of the Clergy of one.
The Bible is designed with Lessons split up and spread throughout the Bible and yet, appear proper for reading. However, as Jesus let us know, by having us go from Old to New Testaments putting together an entire Lesson and then, understanding how different the lesson is then having the partial of it aka A lesson learned out of context. This, mankind everywhere has been doing and not know they are.

I also have OCD so it’s been a real struggle for me to discern what is Gods voice and what is just my own brain. I always get worried at the parables about those that are asleep or lazy because I definitely have those qualities. BibleProject and many other wonderful resources have helped me to know God more and understand that my life is a journey that I will end better than I am now. I trust in Gods Grace to lead me in the right way even when I struggle with change.

I think I wanna share some of my thoughts about it...
I hope this may answer your objections, but if otherwise please don't hesitate to reject it...
I think the fact that Jesus cursed the fig tree and threw demons to pigs was not parable at all.
      It did happen..
But in my view, Jesus did this simply because tree and pigs are nonhuman. As we read the bible we will find that Jesus shows mercy to people but great power to evil spirits, wind, plants, and animals.
Its a good news that Jesus did what he taught, to love another as to love him/herself...
In conclusion I assume that so many things are used by the Lord to teach men the way of salvation..

Jesus of Nazareth was a master storyteller, and many of his most well known teachings were given in the form of parables. These were short fictional stories that appear simple but are packed with many layers of meaning. Most teachers use stories to make complex topics clear, to make difficult ideas more understandable. But, when Jesus was once asked by his disciples why he told so many parables, he gave an answer that has puzzled many readers: "To you all the secret of the Kingdom of God has been given; but to those on the outside, everything comes in parables, so that even though they might see, they will not perceive, and even though they might hear, they will not understand..." (Mark 4:11-12). In other words, Jesus told parables with a dual purpose: to make the arrival of God's kingdom clear to some, but unclear to others. His parables both reveal and conceal his message. Now, that may strike some of us as a strange way to spread your message: "let me be as unclear as possible." But, when we take the historical context of Jesus' mission seriously, and when we understand that Jesus told parables because he saw himself in the tradition of Israel's prophets, things do get more clear. First, Jesus said his mission was to announce the arrival of God's reign to Israel, in order to bring the story of their covenant with God to its climax. Jesus' message both critiqued the power brokers in Jerusalem, and bypassed them in renewing the people of Israel outside of their most cherished institution of the temple. People were hailing him as the "anointed one" (i.e. the Messiah), which put him on a collision course with the "anointed" high priest in Jerusalem. So, Jesus needed a communication strategy that would spread his message and movement while also delaying any potential conflict. And parables were the perfect vehicle. To those who were compelled by Jesus already, these stories about birds and seed and farmers and vineyards were perfectly clear: God's kingdom was arriving through Jesus, and was taking a surprising form that both shocked people and seemed the fitting fulfillment of Israel's story. But to those who opposed Jesus, they would seem like the idle ponderings of an irresponsible itinerant teacher who was leading Israel astray. But Jesus' parables weren't simply a diversion tactic, they also packed a powerful message for those who understood that he was renewing the ancient vocation of Israel's prophets. They too used the power of prophetic poetry, metaphor, and parable to provoke Israel's imagination, to see that God was truly at work in their midst doing a new thing to restore his kingdom on earth as in heaven. Jesus' parable were invitations to see God's kingdom in a new way, and so they stimulate the imagination much more than they make everything clear. Jesus wasn't primarily trying to communication a body of information, rather he was trying to prod and poke and provoke Israel to respond to him. The parables, then, are not short narrative lessons in morality and religion. They are one the primary ways that Jesus invited people to see the arrival of God's kingdom with fresh eyes, so that they get up and respond, and follow him.

      TO CHRISTIANS
[Quran 42.14-15] They only disbanded after they received knowledge (of their Bible) fallaciously among them. And if it were not a word from your Lord [Allah] that postponed it to a later date, it would have been all settled among them then. And those who inherited the Book (the Bible) from them are in great suspicion of it. Therefore call them (to the Quran) and straighten your ways as you are ordered and don't follow their passions and say: "I believe in what Allah revealed of the Book (The Quran) and I was ordered to be just among you (both Christians and Jews); Allah is our Lord and your Lord, we have our actions and you have your actions, no argument between us and you, Allah brings us together and to Him we are (all) destined."

Isaac Matthews You are missing the point of this parable and comparing it to communal living in Acts- Jesus is talking about the same inheritance in the Kingdom of Heaven for His followers, no matter if they came to serve him early on or later... shown in a parable of the workers in the field- It’s not about money or material resources in this world. In Acts- “distributing to each according to their needs” was about making sure everyone in the community in this material world had their needs met.

I love how in the animation you guys made Jesus very"ordinary-looking". The Scriptures says that "there was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him".(Isaiah 53:2).In fact, I believe He was so ordinary-looking that Judas had to kiss Jesus so that the Roman soldiers could actually tell which one was Him!(Matthew 26:48). This is consistent with the teaching on the tabernacle(which was a picture of Christ) because it was pure gold on the inside but covered with plain badger skin on the outside, which everyone saw. What detail!

Elijah has returned; GOD's prophet speaks: The Bible uses symbolic language more often than not. "The letter kills, but Spirit gives life." "Spirit gives life, the flesh counts for nothing." And although Isaiah 53:2 seems to speak of physical appearance, it actually means that Yeshua would not be one who appeals to people through earthly means, through status and politics. He would not be one who makes his message appealing to people by telling them what they want to hear (like a politician does). His message was totally foreign to this world, for "My Kingdom is not of this world." Yeshua One with Christ was actually a magnificently handsome man, as the first century historian Josephus indicated. I know. I have seen Him in the flesh.
Yeshua One with Christ said: "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest, it is in parables, so that, 'Seeing, they may not see; and hearing, they may not understand.'" And if you understood His "good news" you would know the meaning of the parables.
The Kingdom of GOD is like unto a mustard seed, because in your present (limited and temporal) incarnation it is an idea that is foreign to you. "My Kingdom is not of this world." And, until you EXPERIENCE the Kingdom of God for yourself, it can be understood ONLY as an idea - a tiny seed of thought that will grow in your mind as you work with this idea and incorporate this idea in your life.
What is this idea? "The Kingdom of GOD is....YOU." The word "within" has confused you. "Is it not written in your law, 'I have said ye are gods?'" When GOD says "good news," GOD MEANS GOOD NEWS! And in these "end times," through yours truly, GOD has presented the full "Gospel" in plain language, for those with ears to hear: "The Book of GOD" at A Course in Truth. When I first read some of the parables I was frustrated that I didnt understand them and impatient waiting for an answer from God, but over time I realized that was kinda the point of them to ponder and think over them and that we arnt supposed to understand everything in the Bible and that God would reveal himself to me on his perfect time. The parables are super interesting and I love your video on it.

_Here's a study that may be helpful to you._
_In Mark __7:13__ and Matthew 15:6 Jesus uses the phrase; _*_“the word of God”_*_ and the phrase; _*_“the commandment of God”_*_ interchangeable._
Mark 7:13 Making *the word of God* of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.
Matthew 15:6 And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made *the commandment* of God of none effect by your tradition.
_Thus it appears “the word of God” is “the commandment of God.” Here are some old testament verses in which seem to say the same thing:_
Numbers 15:31 Because he hath despised *the word of the LORD,* and hath broken *his commandment,* that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.
Psalms 103:20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do *his commandments,* hearkening unto the voice of *his word.*
      Proverbs 2:1 My son, if thou wilt receive *my words,* and hide *my commandments* with thee;
_In the above scriptures; the word[s] of God and the commandment[s] of God are one and the same._
John 1:14 And *the Word was made flesh,* and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
_Per John __1:14__, Jesus is God's word made flesh._
_The following is a scripture study that Jesus is the Word._
John 7:16 *Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.*
_When Jesus spoke those words, he would have known (and still knows) that God's doctrine had long been established within the old testament scriptures._
_Within the same book of John, seven chapters later, Jesus says:_
John 14:6 *Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.*
_When Jesus spoke the words; "I am the way, the truth, and the life..." Jesus would have known (and still knows) that God's doctrine of the way and the truth was already established in the old testament._
*The Way* is *the law* and *the commandments:*
Psalms 119:32 I will run *the way* of *thy commandments,* when thou shalt enlarge my heart.
Psalms 119:1 [...] Blessed are the undefiled *in the way,* who walk *in the law* of the LORD.
Malachi 2:8 But ye are departed out of *the way;* ye have caused many to stumble at *the law;* ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
*The Truth* is *the law* and *the commandments:*
Psalms 119:151 Thou art near, O LORD; and all *thy commandments are truth.*
Psalms 119:142 Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and *thy law is the truth.*
_Jesus would have also known (and still knows) God's doctrine had already long been established as to how to obtain life._
Proverbs 7:2 *Keep my commandments, and live; and my law* as the apple of thine eye.
Proverbs 4:4 He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: *keep my commandments, and live.*
_When Jesus said he is the way, the truth, and the life; he would have known (and still knows) the old testament declared the way and the truth to be God's commandments and laws._
_Also Jesus would have also known (and still knows) the way to obtain life is by keeping God's commandments._
_Jesus would have known (and still knows) that he was (and is) saying that he is God's law and God's commandments and that he is eternal life and the only way to the Father._
_Jesus is God's words made flesh._
_Because it is indicated God made his commandments flesh, do (test) the following:_
_Read some of Jesus's sayings about himself and place “the word of God” which is “the ten commandments” (which are the words of the covenant, Exo __34:28__ & Deu __4:13__) into the very place where Jesus says “I” or “me.”_
      _(Example: John __12:46__)_
*John **12:46** I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.*
John 12:46 I _(the ten commandments)_ am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
      _(Example: John 14:6)_
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, *I* am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, *I* _(the ten commandments)_ am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
      (Example John 10:14)
John 10:14 *I* am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
John 10:14 *I* _(the ten commandments)_ am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
_It would appear that God made his Word (his commandments) flesh. But lets test this on something more difficult (John 14:9-12)._
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have *I* been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known *me,* Philip? he that hath seen *me* hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
John 14:10 Believest thou not that *I am* in the Father, and the Father in *me?* the words that *I* speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in *me,* he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe *me* that I am in the Father, and the Father in *me:* or else believe me for the very works' sake.
John 14:12 Verily, verily, *I* say unto you, He that believeth on *me,* the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me _(the ten commandments),_ Philip? he that hath seen me _(the ten commandments)_ hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I _(the ten commandments)_ am in the Father, and the Father in me _(the ten commandments)?_ the words that I speak unto you I _(the ten commandments)_ speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me _(the ten commandments),_ he doeth the works.
John 14:11 Believe me _(the ten commandments)_ that I am in the Father, and the Father in me _(the ten commandments):_ or else believe me _(the ten commandments)_ for the very works' sake.
John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me _(the ten commandments),_ the works that I _(the ten commandments)_ do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
_Question; How can anyone do greater works than Jesus as stated in this apparent riddle in John __14:12__?_
_Or; How can anyone do something greater than keeping the ten commandments?_
_Using the ten commandments as a light (Psa 119:105 & Pro __6:23__) we can see and understand the riddle (in John __14:12__) in the following way:_
*John **14:12** Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.*
_However first look that this riddle seem contradictory to Jesus' statement in John __13:16__:_
*John **13:16** Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.*
_Following up questions; How can anyone do anything greater did Jesus did when Jesus never sinned?_
_How can anyone do anything greater than keeping the ten commandments?_
_Pondering an Answer: Jesus never sinned. And we on the other hand, are sinners. We have to repent because we are sinners._
_Pondering Answers continued: Jesus never had to repent. Jesus never sinned therefore Jesus could never have any sins to repent of. Jesus cannot repent of sins._
John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me _(the ten commandments),_ the works that I do shall he do also _(he shall also keep the ten commandments);_ and greater works than these shall he do *_(repenting_*_ of not keeping the ten commandments);_ because I go unto my Father.
_It would appear that “greater works” would mean further or go beyond._
_If this study is correct (using the ten commandments as a light) then what Jesus is saying is that he views repentance of sin as no mere small matter. In John __14:12__ he is saying repentance of sin is a very great thing; even greater (going beyond) what he himself had to do._
_Jesus is God's word made flesh. Further, Jesus is the new covenant in the flesh. Notice in Matthew __26:26__-28._
Matthew 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.
      Matthew 26:27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of *the new testament,* which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
      (Matthew 26:28 “testament” G1242.) = covenant
G1242 διαθήκη diathēkē dee-ath-ay'-kay From G1303; properly a disposition, that is, (specifically) a contract (especially a devisory will): - covenant, testament.
Matthew 26:28 For this is my blood of *the new [covenant]* which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
_(The ten commandments are the words to the covenant.)_
Exodus 34:28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables *the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.*

I think we can add one more point here regarding about the use of parables: as mentioned, it reveals the truth to those who have ears to hear, but it caused confusion to those who have not. in other words, those who repent and humble themselves to his words, through prayer, listening and reflection will be able to understand. but to those who are wicked and unrepentant, they would really seem nonsense -- the parable is more than just buying time. it means that the parables are also a call to a change of heart where Jesus plants the seed of his kingdom.

Hello I really love the work that you do, I came from a family of Catholics, I grew up not knowing who Jesus really is and about His teachings. I was told from our Church that we should pray to the cross and the rosary. As I child I kept on questioning my faith if He really was real, I grew up to just be good and pray to the rosary so I when I die I can go to heaven. My elders also said to memorize the Oratio Imperata and pray to Mary. I always question that as a kid because they said tje Lord is kind and forgiving so why can't I just pray directly at Him? Why do I have to pray to Saints to pray for my safety and forgiveness. I didn't know that our Savior has a name which is Jesus Christ. I still struggle because sometimes I still sin and I don't know any Church where I can ask questions about this because a lot of the Churches here in the Philippines are all Catholic Churches. A lot of your videos helped me understand more about the Bible because I struggled at first understanding the words written. So thank you Bible Project for letting me know who Jesus Christ really is, it really helped me out throughout last year. Btw I'm 22 and I just started reading the Bible around last August and it has been amazing ever since.

Love it! Thank you for the powerful visual reminders of the wonderful stories told by our LORD. Unfortunately the church in the western world is losing the art of biblical story telling, wanting to reduce everything to science, logic and categories. Thank God for BibleProject.

The Landowner and the tenants always stood out to me as the second brutal tales Jesus had taught, the first being that time he told of a king who had a servant tortured forever for betraying a fellow servant, but now it clicked
The Pharisees proclaim themselves "Men of God"; the Tenants hired by the Landowner, who is God, and the servants the Landowner sends symbolise His Word or the messengers He sent to deliver said Word to the people, like the servants were to collect His share of the fruit, but the Pharisees rejected them and kept the share for themselves, so to speak, and now it ends with the Landowner's own son, Jesus Himself, dying by the tenants' hands, leading to them being killed/punished by the Landowner and leased to new ones
It's not only further foretelling of Jesus' own death, along with the Temple being rebuilt in three days, but also a warning to those who dares to reject the Lord and have Him put to death rather than listening to His Word and letting Him collect His share
For we are like the grapes of a vine, and the Lord shall come with a Sickle with which He will harvest us for the Kingdom of God

I believe they also have a team of different artists who each contribute their own unique styles, which is why it varies so widely from video to video, while still imploring a lot of the same editing, transition, and audio techniques to make it cohesive.
