  • Wild blackberries are taking over - how to get rid of them. After we cleared out the orchard in the garden area and planted all the trees and blackberries, it didn't take long for the wild blackberries to find their way back into the orchard. While we love all of the wild berries we have on the property, we don't want them taking over the areas we've designated for other things. But how to get rid of them? We don't want to use harsh chemicals like Roundup (Roundup be GONE!), but we needed the blackberries that we did NOT plant in the orchard gone. Mitch did his homework and is trying out a natural, organic method of just pouring white vinegar on the undesirable plant, he explains all his reasoning for trying this method in the video. So far so good!

****Hi, I'm Christine. Welcome to My Tiny Retirement. My husband, Mitch, and I went tiny two years ago for various reasons. The number one reason was to have control over our own lives. Going tiny for financial independence was also a big reason. It felt like every time we got on a path to lower our monthly bills, we were right back in the same spot within five years, the hamster wheel had us but good. And we wanted to retire . . . we were in our fifties, young enough to be able to do things but the health issues of age were creeping up. It was obvious that as long as we had the big monthly mortgage payment, nothing was going to change. We’d been watching the tiny house movement for years, loving it, but a tiny house on wheels was not what we were looking for . . . we didn’t want to be nomads, we wanted permanency to garden, raise chickens, we wanted a homestead but we didn’t want the big farmhouse that typically goes with it (at least in our minds). And we definitely didn’t want a loft for a bedroom. And, surprisingly, a tiny house on wheels is quite expensive, which we also didn’t want. One day sitting around the firepit at our camp in my hometown in Maine, we contemplated never leaving, we loved it at camp. We started visualizing clearing out some of the trees for a garden, where we would put the chicken coop, where a good place for a couple of guest cabins would be . . . all in daydream mode, mind you. But . . . as long as we had the big mortgage and the big house, we could never retire or do anything but work to pay for that house because we still had a good fifteen years left on the mortgage. Then the light bulb went off. What were we doing?! We wanted to go tiny. We OWNED over six acres outright. We already had a shell of a tiny dwelling on the property. Anything we needed to do to make it habitable would have to be done anyway to a new tiny house. What the heck was wrong with us?! Decision made. We were going tiny for financial freedom and going tiny to retire early. The house in New Hampshire was going on the market! IMMEDIATELY. This was mid-May of 2019. June 13th, not even 30 days later, we were moving into the camper with all of our belongings in storage, and went to work making our tiny camp into our perfect tiny house cottage in the woods. We were officially pulled into the tiny house movement. Follow along our journey as we live our tiny house lifestyle as we garden, work on our tiny home, cook some fantastic meals, and just enjoy our tiny house life and live our own way, thanks to living in a tiny house. How about you? You know who we are now, drop some comments and tell us about yourselves.

Getting rid of blackberry bushes/vines is difficult. They have a mind of their own and because their vines grow under ground, you never know where they will pop up. I usually have to just keep cutting them back, or mowing over them (of course this way, they always come back). With a pair of thick gloves you can sometimes pull them out by their roots with the runners coming along with it. Over the years we have learned to workaround them, and just enjoy the berries. It looks like maybe the vinegar will do the trick! Good luck!

We'll see. We just don't want them taking over the fruit trees.

I do the same too Kat. i just keep mowing or weed wacking them. Interested to see if the vinegar works for good.

I'd like to see this experiment with it just applied to the soil/roots! Then you'd know if you could just dump it under a large mature blackberry bush that are too tall to spray all the leaves! Vinegar will kill darn near any plant its poured onto, especially when its young new shoots like this. Some people add salt (and a bit of Dawn soap I think? There are many recipes online.) to make a mixture to use in place of Round up.
    Thanks again!

Funny, you are removing blackberries and I'm trying to keep mine alive in a huge pot on my porch. Lol We move a lot and I want to bring them with me. Is there a video on how to protect the leaves? I have something eating the leaves of my blackberry bushes and my lemon tree/bush. I'm currently in Va near D.C. so I have to learn different things for different states. Lol

Just the small invasive wild ones that will choke everything else out. We have giant juicy ones that we've cultivated.

Your axe/adze mattock is the best hand tool for removing blackberries.
I have a pick/adze myself, but I have an axe and two handed loppers handy when I'm digging up blackberry.
I hear poor, pathetic people with ACRES of blackberry wondering what they can do about it. I've given that some thought and I'm guessing it would be useful to hire a farmer with an old fashioned plow to plow up the affected areas to a depth of 18" or so. Digging the roots and root ball up is much the hardest part of the job, and I'm guessing that a good plowing with make it relatively easy to sort out the roots and root balls.

We have TONS of them all over the property, but right there is where we planted our new orchard, including some super huge, cultivated blackberries. Wild blackberries are teeny and extremely invasive so we need to get them out of there so they don't choke out and kill our new stuff. We still have TONS for foraging and hunting for.
