  • @NocturneSoul

    The aesthetics of this video was inspired by german expressionism, and it recreates Fritz Lang movie Metropolis and Tamara Lempicka's art deco paintings. Some scenes are direct recreations of Lempicka's paintings. And the final line about the heart and the mind is a quote from Metropolis. The video depicts the male and the female world. A group of men working in a factory where there are no feelings, as if they were machines themselves, working in a hard, suffocating environment. On the other side Madonna represents the female side (the cat is an obvious symbol) and at some point she penetrates the male world, but in order to do that she has to find the male side of her personality (the part where she's dancing dressed as a man). She will take her questioning on the social limits of gender and male and female identity even further in the live performance, through the iconic cone-bra that she wears beneath the male suit. That whole performance is about gender questioning. But back to the video... once she penetrated the male world she starts to sing and one of the workers hears her voice. She encourages him to express himself and that provokes his awakening from his dehumanizing submission, which then provokes a riot. So the song is about expressing yourself but also about understanding why we do the things we do and why sometimes our feelings are disconnected from our actions and we become a cogwheel in the social machine. It's also about being honest to your lover and most of all to yourself. And of course it's a feminist song about empowering women. She is saying "you can be a feminist and enjoy sex". And that was very controversial. Some feminists said she was degrading women but she explained that the woman in the video is a woman in charge, she was crawling under her own table and she chained herself, she was chained to her desire. There wasn't a man making her do it. It was her call. This was a groundbreaking song and very controversial video.

    I always saw the older guy in the hood as ‘the patriarchy’, looking happy when everyone is locked in their separate gender worlds and roles and becoming frightened when Madonna’s voice starts to be heard in the male world and even more so when it makes the men start to fight and rebel.

    • @EmpressReacts
      @EmpressReacts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah excellent explanation ‼

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes and her relates to the role in the film Metropolis... the rich man who owns and 'enslaves' the workers. He is the 'mind' in the quote... the educated elite who needs the 'hands' i.e. workers to make money... and Madonna is the 'heart' the person who teaches that the hands need the mind (i.e. - a boss/job to earn a living) and the mind needs the hands (the workers to run the machines to manufacture goods the boss can sell) and they need to respect one another to function and thrive. If the boss is inhuman in his working conditions, eventually the workers will break/starve/become ill or die or will rebel. The mind needs the heart in order to value and respect the hands... it's a 'union-friendly' theme which started in the industrial revolution but it still has meaning now with companies like Amazon and Wal*Mart getting rich while treating their staff like garbage.

    This is my favorite Madonna music video of all time!
    Yes, you got the film reference to Metropolis which inspired the look, feel, the theme and the message/moral of the music video correct.
    Also the paintings of Tamara de Lempicka influenced the look of some scenes especially the 2nd shot of Madonna wearing the olive green dress with the black cat.
    I think that it was the bald headed man who was the boss of the factory and Madonna's character was his mistress.
    And for me I think that when Madonna's character is dressed in a man's suit and dancing on top of the staircase that this is the male worker's dream or fantasy of her.
    And Madonna's character's black cat/pussycat is her messenger to bring the male worker to her. She has said jokingly in her 1990 BBC documentary interview that the message of the music video is that "Pussies rule the world."
    I think that the male worker leaving his work station was what caused the fight between the two other workers because they had to pick up his slack.
    I'm glad that you like this remix better than the album version but I think that the album version was appropriate for the album as a whole. It would feel out of place in relations to the 60s and 70s influence on the album like the Sly and the Family Stone and the Staple Sisters and Charles Wright on the album version of Express Yourself.
    The horn section was taken out but in the music video you see that there is horn section of androids or robots that play whenever the bald headed man feels like it.
    But I love this remix by Shep Pettibone and it's really an appropriate remix for the futuristic look and feel of the music video.
    Madonna sure did bring the glamor of Marlene Dietrich, Lana Turner, etc. She brought back the 20s flapper style in the black negligee and stocking with the garters.
    The last time she had blonde hair was for her Open Your Heart music video. In the La Isla Bonita music video she had a dirty blonde or a honey, light brown hair color. For the Who's That Girl music video she had her natural hair color grown out with the honey, light brown hair color as highlights.
    Madonna went blonde again because she was in the movie Dick Tracy but she wanted to keep her hair color natural and begged Warren Beatty to keep it brunette. But Warren was the director and he and his director of photography and lighting director all liked her in a blonde wig with the way the light shined around her face in her hair.
    There were other times when she didn't want to or even considered going blonde but they all had to do with work like after she was done with the Virgin Tour she went back to being a brunette but went blonde again in November of 85 to get ready for her role in Shanghai Surprise, after she was done filming Who's That Girl she cut her hair short and let her natural hair color grow out until she decided to go back to blonde for the Who's That Girl Tour, went back to brunette after the Who's That Girl Tour for her Bloodhounds Of Broadway and Speed The Plow roles until she had a blonde fore lock for her Pepsi commercial and her role as Breathless Mahoney in Dick Tracy movie, when she was done filming her Oh Father music video she went back to brunette in the late fall of 89 but by early 90 she went back to blonde for her Blond Ambition Tour and stayed blonde for her possible role as Evita that she could have been in the late 90 to early 91, she went back to brunette for her premieres of Truth or Dare documentary in L.A.,NYC and Cannes Film Festival in May 91 until she went back to dark auburn, then strawberry blonde and then yellow blonde for her Sex book in 92 which her hairstylist recommended, she went back to brunette in early 94 after her Girlie Show in 93 and had a blonde fore lock until she went blonde for her Bedtime Stories album cover photo session and her music videos for the singles of that album, she went back to brunette for her Power of Goodbye and Nothing Really Matters music videos for her Ray of Light album singles until she went blonde for her music video for Beautiful Stranger and her movie The Next Best Thing, she went back brunette for her American Life album cover photo session and for the American Life music video but went blonde for her Hollywood music video. She wore a brunette wig for her Open Your Heart, Rain, Bedtime Story, Evita movie, Frozen, Hollywood, Reinvention Tour's Vogue performance backdrop screen video and tour book photos, 2009 Purim party costume as her daughter Lourdes, as a French maid for the 2011 Purim party, 2013 Met Gala party and for her Madame X album cover photo session, making of the album documentary, tour book photos and VIP tour book, Medellin, God Control, Batuka music videos. She wore blonde wigs for her Hollywood, Jump music videos and a blonde bangs clip on for her Sticky and Sweet Tour's tour book photos and the Die Another Day video interlude, 2009 W magazine photos, Madame X documentary, 2021 MTV VMA opening video clip and recently for Jimmy Fallon and her Harlem basement restaurant performance.
    This music video was directed by David Fincher who also directed Madonna's Oh Father, Vogue and Bad Girl music videos.

    Ok I coped over the comment from the blocked video 😉
    First off thank you Empress for making blocked videos accessible to those of us who aren’t Patreon members (some of us are caregivers for our parents & don’t get paid 😉).
    So happy for this reaction, I loved this video when it first came out but I already had related soulwise to Madonna by this point. This music video shows a powerful man who holds her as a prize rather than appreciate her & understand her as a person & especially as a woman. The crawling to the milk is pure artistic imagery of femininity. Cats are regarded in the human world as the feminine soul and yes the milk was expressing a certain guttural reference 🤣.
    The worker follows the cat to find the woman chained (metaphor for not expressing herself & allowing the man to be numero uno) & releases the woman that she is & the desires she wants. If you notice the throw back to “satin sheets are very romantic, what happens when your not in bed?” by placing Madonna on a bed wrapped in satin sheets by the man who is listening to her wants & desires. The powerful man realizes a bit too late that the worker is missing & that the worker is listening to the woman & placing her first. Love your reaction & you of course 💗 💫

    When I was in college, one of my roommates was a HUGE Madonna fan. He would complain that today’s artists lack depth, are always talking about sex, perform naked and are vocally inept. I was regularly checking him for his lack of irony and self awareness.😂 No Madonna fan should ever complain about the state of today’s music. Madonna’s success is 100% responsible for the death in quality of music. When Madonna became the biggest pop star in the world, record execs started following the Madonna playbook where sex sells, vocals don’t matter, and scandals bring sales. Every Madonna fan past and present is responsible for the death of a music industry where skill and quality was the centerpiece. No shade or hate, those are just the facts that y’all need to own.

      Money. Money. Ruined music. Not Madonna.

      @@Joelsellers29 Well, Madonna was where the money money was at and that’s how she ruined music. Today’s industry is like a blueprint of Madonna’s career. I’m open minded so if you have an alternative explanation, I’d love to hear it.

    I know, don't like the album version of this song either. Those trumpets/horns sound boring to me. She should have had this version better on the album. This music video is classic. Very art- Deco. She looks done head to toe. The guy was hot. I love the message of this song.
