    "Truth is the ultimate dare"
This movie revolutionized the world. I still remember how it was back then. Nothing in the whole world today can come ever close to the impact this movie had in the world, in people's lives and in culture in general.

Loved your reaction. This documentary doesn’t get the recognition it deserves in my mind.
So many pop stars from Kylie to Gaga and Katy Perry have tried to do similar films but none have come close to this one, and I think it’s because while they’re all brilliant entertainers none of them were quite as honest as Madonna was here in this moment.

Yup… M is willing to go there, which I think is partly why she gets so much crap… she’s shown herself, good and bad and it gives folks ammo to criticize her. But what I appreciate about her is that she doesn’t take herself too seriously that she can’t allow herself to be honest and vulnerable. Sure she has an ego, but it’s well earned by now.

I respect Madonna for also including some scenes which show her in a not so positive light, like when her childhood ''idol'' came to see her and she was in a rush. Understandable with a show every day but yeah it made me think ''aww, she was so excited to see you, wish you would have sat down with her for 10 mins'' or when the make up lady got dateraped and Madonna when she gets told about her butt bleeding when she woke up, nervously giggles for a second. It's human but these are scenes other people probably would not include as they could be criticized, so hats off to Madonna for including those and also those where she is annoyed at the sound guys.
I love the scenes in Europe where they all are so happy and excited in the beginning and yeah Nikki is hilarious and seems just as outrageous personality wise as Madonna. Like A Virgin 2025 hahaha

Love this movie soo much! What a great documentary. What a great look into the world's biggest pop star at the time. That Vogue hat that Ollie was wearing when Madonna is giving it to him, was the one I told you about that was from the Chicago show I attended. The girl that made it and threw it up on the stage was sitting behind us. I died when I seen him wearing it in the movie! This movie had such an impact on many of us young gay boys at the time , and still does. Seeing these proud gay men be themselves was so eye opening to a young 18 yo small town gay boy like me. The first gay people I ever seen and the first gay kiss. Wow, such great memories! Love you and this journey Empress!!!

My beautiful special Empress that I love. I was 18 when this came to cinemas as it was the only way you could watch it.
I think Madonna was revolutionary in that way.
It was 1991 and I was being out and proud and I saw it three times in a small town cinema.
There are so many moments that today are considered normal.
    Madonna paved the way.
The entire documentary celebrated life love and acceptance but was real at the same time.
I also think she was the one who understood that live performances could be like video.
I know that you love vocals but what’s interesting to me is that you don’t really comment on Madonnas performance or vocals much (and if you didn’t like them that’s fair).
This moment was the peak of her fame. The world had never seen anything like her.
The fitness required to do this show is incredible.
Empress I saw this 3 times at the cinema and if changed my life.
If validated I was ok as a gay man. It’s hard to realise but Madonna put her career on the line to support gay rights.
I would love to see you make a video about her goal performance and ability as she’s about to move into the true second phase of her career.
I think you got some of the documentary but I think a lot of it is specific to the time.
Just know this increased her legend stats. 😊

  • @Patrick3183

1900 Madonna was the absolute peak of her career. She was not only the most successful with her music but her level of fame was intense. Cover of every magazine. Her name on everyone’s lips. She was the biggest star ever in 1990.

The "old dude yes man" you referred to was her manager, Freddy DeMann. She hired him in 1983, largely because, up to that point, he had been Michael Jackson's manager and she figured if he was good enough for MJ, he was good enough for her lol. Pretty ballsy move for a newcomer to have the confidence to even approach a major industry player like that.
And to his credit, shows what a visionary Freddy was to recognize star quality when so many at that time considered Madonna a flash in the pan.
Although I believe he's the one who told her that her career was over after the MTV Like a Virgin performance.
But here he was placing bets on the LaV performance in Toronto...saying "i bet she does it MORE!"

👑 I’ll watch your entire reaction on Patreon but this was a great teaser for it. This documentary is such a culmination of her career and character, as well as an important study of social issues in 1990. As I’ve said before, everyone I’ve ever shown it to has at least emerged with MAD respect for Madonna, if not a completely converted FAN. It captures her so well. All her good points and her bad points too, with courageous transparency. Such a rivetingly multifaceted woman at one of the many peaks of her boldly experimental and genuinely revolutionary life. Focused, artistic, caring, narcissistic, feminine, masculine, generous, social, solitary, powerful, vulnerable, and just epic in every way.

There was only 3 months between the end of the tour and the release of "Justify My love". But, in that time.. the "Justify My Love" controversy has exploded and not only changed how the press covers Madonna... it's changed how the public perceives her. The public and media had not recovered from the "Justify My Love" controversy when "Truth or Dare" came out... and now that you've seen the move, you can imagine the fuel that added to the fire. This was fantastic!! Have been looking forward to this since the beginning of the journey practically. I was forbidden to see this movie when it was first released. A few years later my Mom bought it for me for my 13th birthday and watched it with me that night. OMG! lol so so awkward! That kiss between Slam and Gabriel was the first time I saw two men kissing (and very much enjoyed it lol) and judging by my Mom's reaction I think it was her first time seeing it too (she didn't enjoy quite as much haha). This was the very beginning of me understanding there's a whole world of people out there like me. This movie was just so impactful on my own Madonna journey.
And I have to say, it's like the planets aligned perfectly to make today the day you would post this. I love to see how people around her react as well. At 5:55 the lady beside her turned her headed and didn’t see Madonna slam the phone down. So when it hits, her head twirled around and she looked startled by M. 😂 “Never turn your back on her you silly girl!”

There are so many things that made this documentary revolutionary, but I’ll try to keep it to a few key points.
    1. Madonna was unafraid to show both her difficult and good sides. She allowed herself to be shown very negatively at first but as the movie goes on you see her deep humanity, and the community she built with her creative team.
    2. She was very generous to show everyone else’s story, so it wasn’t just all about her.
    3. Having so many openly gay dancers, who are at times not always shown in a good light either, was SHOCKING in 1990/91. Gay men were show in media as degenerate, sex crazed and evil, and for Truth of Dare to show these men as people, not stereotypes, was eye opening and meant so much to a community that was dealing with AIDS in a very religious/conservative era much like now. (Fuck the Supreme Court… women’s rights are human rights!)
    4. There are some ugly bits for sure, looking back at the doc. How M mocks her childhood friend Moira is pretty difficult to watch and Mama Makeup’s date rape and how cold pretty much everyone was about it is pretty dreadful. I think that might be from how many of them were from NYC, where you had to build up a thick skin to survive, but the girl was an innocent who clearly needed support that the others weren’t willing or able to give her. Also, Gabriel was very hurt that M kept the Truth or Dare kiss with Slam in the film when he asked her to remove it because he was still closeted. I understand that M rightly felt it was important to the gay community to see itself represented in that kiss, and what it would mean socially and politically, but she really should have removed it if it went against his wishes.

I'd describe Sandra Bernhard as "in your face" lol. She was a frequent guest on Letterman over the years. She always brought a shady/high fashion/campy glam element to comedy that was uniquely her's. Dave always acted like he didn't understand half of what she said...and maybe he didn't but he knew she was cool. And a lil scary 🤣

Seeing the pride parade was so powerful in 1991. It was a time when people were here today and gone tomorrow. Very scary times. Oliver was so homophobic but oddly the F word didn’t really bother anyone back then. If it did, i feel like we had bigger problems then. I met Oliver, Slam, Carlton & Jose at the 2019 premiere of “Strike a Pose” in San Francisco. Oliver has completely changed his ways. He learned a lot ofer the last 3 decades. Great guys and if you want an even deeper dive on the dancers, check the film out.

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, he’s come a lot way but if you watch the doc, the gay dancers are pretty awful to him as well. It’s hard to know which came first. If Oliver was homophobic to them from the jump then the gay dancers picking on him seems a little justified… like saying they’re going to convert him just to play into his worst fears as a way to mock him. They also seemed jealous of him and the rumours that he was sleeping with M, and mocked his talent by suggesting he slept his way into the show. It’s not pretty on either side but maybe that was the gay dancers way of coping with what they felt was hostility from Oliver.

What's also funny to me is that your initial reactions are the same as mine when this came out. There wasn't the same media pre-release fuss they have now. I only knew this film was coming out when I saw something in a January issue of Variety magazine. I was looking forward to it because I had completely missed the tour AND the broadcast in 1990 so I was essentially playing catch-up with my favorite entertainer thinking this Truth or Dare was a concert film only (as in JUST the concert but for cinemas).
It was actually much more interesting and entertaining experience than I was expecting. However, still I had not seen the Blond Ambition Tour at that point until I purchased a Laserdisc player later in 1991. I purchased the exclusive laserdiscs of both the Nice, France show AND the Yokohama show from Japan (which was a compilation of shows in Japan unlike the Nice, France HBO Broadcast which was a one-time-only performance). After having seen her live shows 2001 through 2020 in person and in many, many cities...I'm still obsessed with this particular tour because I wanted to see it so badly in person and it never happened!
I love how you're discovering Madonna's creations - in a crazy way, it's like going back in time and starting over again.

    I have a suggestion
Because many of us were so affected by this film can you consider posting your full reaction on Patreon?
    Just an idea.
You’re spot on about Madonna. This is basically the peak of her fame.
You are so observant about who she is.
I also think that most of us would love you to react to the concert footage individually for each song as the filming of it is much better than the tour you watched. I will send you a private message on Patreon.
At the time this was the most successful documentary of all time.
I saw this in the cinemas in Adelaide in Australia. A small capital city.
This was the first time I saw gay people being themselves and happy and Madonna loving them.
I was 18 and I had never seen two men kiss.
For a generation of men and women this changed everything for us and made us feel ok.
Plus you can see how hard she always works.
This was also the birth of reality TV. At the time no one had done this.
You’re amazing as always but because you had to edit it down for copyright.
    I suggest.
    1) post the unedited reaction on Patreon
    2) react to all of the performance footage separately

LOVED watching your reaction Empress! This came out at a time when I think the only reality Tv show was MTV’s The Real World so she was definitely a trend setter with this reality based documentary. My standout moments are the similarities in our reactions watching for the first time. I felt the same way as you about the girl that said she was basically date raped. Seemed like no one either believed her or cared which made me feel bad for her. Also I did feel Ollie was not living his truth and that is just my opinion because to each his own. I also felt Madonna did reveal her vulnerability when she waited around for her older brother and he never showed up as well as when she found out Antonio Banderas was married. There are moments when she comes across like a very “normal” every day young woman with the same doubts and disappointments. So glad you enjoyed watching it as much as many of us did back in the day!! 😃

Another fun fact: in most territories outside the US the movie was called "In Bed With Madonna" and it was even screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival (out of competition). There is also some good footage of Madonna attending that screening here on YT.

The finger in mouth-gag was a shot at Costner, who was riding high in box office appeal during this time and she was poking fun at his "aw-shucks' guy next door, small town boy, wholesome image. He was the goody two shoes, every man, James Stewart of the day and she knew it. Plus...notice how he made a comment about not being able "to do that project" with her. That was "The Bodyguard " she, I guess was briefly considered for. All of her catty bitchiness aside. She admits recently to cringing at her behavior in this movie, during her younger years. But, don't we all, right? Lol. It was Gabriel, Kevin and one other, I forget. I think Gabriel had a valid point personally if not legally. He asked M to remove the kiss with Slam during the Truth or Dare game because he was still closeted. That would be pretty devastating to suddenly become a poster child for positive gay sexuality when you weren’t ready to come out. M had a legal right to keep it in, and we all know how much that kiss meant to our community, but should it have been taken out if Gabriel had asked for her to do so? I believe so. Consent is very important. Privacy is very important. I’m not sure that the political, artistic and social reasons why that kiss was so groundbreaking and important make up for the lack of consent on Gabriel’s part. Sadly he passed of AIDS and we will never know if he would have changed his mind and approved of it now.

Ok wow, first off so glad you finally saw the movie and liked it. Second wow there is a lot to unpack here it's been 30 years since this movie released so I may forget some things and some things I have come out since beause I read her brother christopher book memories of order may escape me so everyone forgive me. Anyway Madonna would come to regret making that face to Kevin because she was front in line to play the star in The Bodygaurd but thanks to that Kevin went with Whitney who was his second choice. Next none of those woman work for Madonna anymore, she may have given her a party but according to Christopher she couldn't take Madonna's attitude anymore and left after they finished the tour I believe. Second the dancer came together again I think during the pandemic to celebrate 30years since Vogue and the tour. Just resently Madonna worked with one of the for her concert at pride last night. I believe his name is Jose Xtravaganza and he has done very well for himself he was even in the FX tv show Pose playing a judge. Second Madonna at that time was not close with her siblings execpt Christopher and youngest Melanie. Her other sister who is really the middle child Paula tried to become a model the problem is those strong Ciccone jeans because back then Madonna and Paula were a bit identical to the point they could have been twins. Martin tried to become a rapper but that didn't work. I don't think they were ever estranged I just think everyone went their own seperate ways not to long ago the oldest of the family Anthony was homeless and lived under a bridge and Madonna suffered a lot of heat from haters about that. Girl just wait in every era from here on you will see just how messy Madonna's life gets. Oh Donna and Nicki would have their own solo careers but they would stay with Madonna 2 more tours. Nicki's last with Madonna would be the Drowned World Tour and Donna last tour with Madonna will be Madonna last huge era The Confessions tour.

I wouldn’t say M’s life is any messier than anyone else’s. I guess she’s had a long, long list of ‘relationships’ and some struggles with family members and friends, but she’s also managed to have strong long lasting friendships with several people, and seems like an excellent, caring, but strict, mother to her six kids. Rocco rebelled but what teenaged boy if given the choice to hang out with a dad who lets you goof off and smoke pot all day or the strict mother who expects you to make something out of yourself, is going to want to be with the mom? He seems to have come around now… I’m sure they’ve worked it out even if they may not be 100% close. I don’t know. But when someone has lived the life she has, and in the public eye where every detail about your relationships is up for public consumption, I would imagine your life would seem pretty messy.

Madonna also gives David alot of freedom to express himself that Rocco can't do because of that homophobic jerk father he has. Empress! Great reaction as always! Truth or Dare is such an interesting movie in 2022. When it came out the media focused on the gay representation, Madonna being vulgar, and just the vibe of Madonna recording intimate moments. You completely honed in on one of the tone deaf moments, which was Mama Makeup’s assault - no one mentioned it then, but now it comes across as cringe. While certain elements haven’t aged well, I can’t think of another female pop star documentary that has showed the subject in such a complex light. Unfortunately, Madonna’s second documentary did not have the same impact, and you will get there 😂 PS, Supposedly the entire Blond Ambition Tour was shot by Alek but the rest of the footage is lost or in a box somewhere - it is one of the Madonna holy grails. PPS, the conversation with M and Kevin Costner was regarding her starring in the Bodyguard, which eventually Whitney Houston got✌️

This movie had such an impact on me as a 17yr old gay boy. To see the dancers totally be themselves on that stage every night with the woman I worshipped, gave me great strength to try and be my authentic self. What happened half way through Empress? After the date rape scene, you on the phone. Did make me laugh, I legit thought you were calling your man to tell him about how that part effected you. 😆

Yeah, she had to cancel her first show for her Who's That Girl Tour in Japan. But ever since then she didn't and wouldn't cancel her show unless she's having throat problems like she did on this tour and or if she's sick. She finished her show on my first concert ever at her Who's That Girl Tour concert on 8/9 in East Rutherford, NJ at the Meadowlands. It rained halfway through the show but she finished it like the professional trooper that she is. I did my best to copy her Who's That Girl music videolook.
I was and still disappointed that they edited out the dance break in the middle of the Express Yourself performance.
I agree with you about how her hairstylist was ignored after she was date raped. I felt that Madonna and her girl crew could have been more supportive and Madonna could have talked with her and comforted her. I'm guessing Madonna didn't want to show her vulnerable side on purpose because it would trigger her feelings of vulnerability when she was forced to perform oral sex on a man on a roof top with a knife at her throat. Oh well, nobody's perfect. But it made her seem a little hypocritical when she said she was being maternal to her dancers and her crew in her interviews promoting this documentary.
I think Melissa Crowe her personal assistant stopped working for her in the early 90s.
And I think that was a Freudian slip when she joked that she was able to go back to sleep after having nightmares and then after her father "f*cked" her. Or maybe she was just joking her provocative joke to provoke the audience.
There are a lot of promotional interviews that she did: MTV's Breakfast With Madonna with Kurt Loder, Entertainment Tonight, Regis And Kathy Lee, the Cannes Film Festival interviews with various European, Japanese and Australian media and the French interview with her with blonde hair in a bun with wavey ringlets coming down and in a multi color dress.
I hope someone finds the lost 250 of edited footage of this documentary.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself but I went to see the documentary about the Blond Ambition Tour's male backup dancers called Strike A Pose at the Castro Theater in SF. I got to meet, talk and take pictures with Kevin, Salim, Oliver, Carlton and Luis. Jose couldn't make it because of work obligations. And the dancer who passed away from AIDS Gabriel's mother was there too for the after screening q&a. They were all nice and friendly especially Kevin, Salim and Oliver. Carlton was/is a bit of a diva who treated me a bit coldly like a diva at an arm's length. But a great documentary about their lives after the tour and most of them haven't seen each other until the documentary was being made. It showed how the dancers themselves were/are inspiration and role models for gay men and how the dancers have their own fan base.

    • @Marc-zi5cq
      @Marc-zi5cq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

in what way? From what i've seen she stayed friends with some of them til the mid 90s and Luis and others went nuts, fame got to their heads, they became addicted to drugs and generally just fucked up their opportunities and regret that now. I don't see how she was unkind, she was taking them to parties, fashion shows etc. years later. Most singers don't even that close to their dancers and hang out with them all the time, like she does let alone giving them this platform to give them so much airtime on a documentary about herself and really making it more about the tour than just herself. Didn't some of them even sue her to get more money out of her and then later starring in their own docu, milking it for all its worth?
Also she hired the non addicted, non messy Carlton again for her next tour in 1993. In what way was she a monster or unkind to them?

“I wish I could say it was weird having cameras follows us around, but it was everything I dreamed about,” he tells THE FIGHT about the making of the film. “I loved it. Even after the tour ended, I remember I would go visit Madonna at her house. We would go down to a magazine store and kind of hang out, and we were followed by paparazzi. I liked all of it. I liked acting annoyed by it.”
Camacho will join Truth or Dare director Alek Keshishian and others for an interview after the Outfest screening. It’s been about a year since he last saw the documentary in its entirety, but he still remembers the first time he saw the film.
“I remember I wished there was more of me in the film,” he said, “My ego at the time wouldn’t let me be alright with what was shown [laughs], but today, it makes me feel very nostalgic. 95 percent were good memories, but I don’t like looking at it too often-especially with friends, because it turns into a Q&A session afterwards.”

She didn't owe her dancers anything beyond paying them and giving them an amazing and ample platform which they could have (some did) use to their advantage. Fame and recognition, I think, can be difficult for some to handle, especially when it is fleeting! Most of those same dancers who performed with her on this iconic tour also got amazing exposure from her Vogue video and the MTV Award show, and more! It's not Madonna's responsibility to carry them, promote or support them beyond that! Yes it's sad that Olie gets fat and turned to waiting tables for a living for a while; though he later returned to his true love of dancing and began teaching dance! I think that fame for most, at best, is mostly fleeting, which can be really hard for some to adjust to....
