It sounds great but it sounds different. The million dollar question for me learning by myself has always been this: how much of what I hear these great players play is actually them instead of the sax gear microphone and editing? I record myself in a room with a small echo on my iPhone and while it sounds good and everyone says it’s great, the sound just is incomparable to the covers I see on TH-cam. I understand with no doubt there are better players than I, I just would like to benchmark where I’m at and idk if the audios on TH-cam are an accurate reference.
Hello ! Thank you for your kind comment. Honestly, the sound you can hear here on TH-cam is pretty much the same you would hear if you were in front of me. There's a little bit of mixing of course (compression, equalization and reverb) but it's really not a crucial thing (I only speak about my videos, I don't know for the other sax players). However, the microphone you record with is really important. It's a normal thing if your recording taken with an iPhone sounds less good than a recording taken with a good microphone (Shure SM58 in this video). So you need to answer this question : "does my tone is different just in my recordings or in real life ?" If your tone is similar in real life then you probably need to buy a better microphone (seems logical but it's for highlighting the fact that mixing is not a big deal). If you can't have the same tone in real life then it may also be the gear you use for playing ! The sax, mouthpiece and reed play a big role in the tone you'll have. Of course it's just my point of view. I hope I answered your question. Have a nice day ! :)

Merci pour ton commentaire ! Si tu parles du morceau en lui-même, tu peux facilement trouver la partition sur internet. Attention à la tonalité (3 dièses à la clé pour la version que je joue là) et à l'instrument (mi bémol si tu joues de l'alto). Si tu parles de mon solo, c'est improvisé donc je n'ai pas de partition malheureusement mais libre à toi d'écouter et de tenter de le reproduire, il n'est pas très compliqué et c'est un super exercice pour travailler l'oreille ! Just bought an alto sax after not playing one for 48 years. My skills are gone, and I am struggling to regain them. But they were never even close to the sound and technique Bastien demonstrates, and probably won't ever, But it's great to hear the potential of the sax on full display. Thank you for the very motivating words Bastien. Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but are you playing that in A minor scale? Also, what mouthpiece and reed are you using? I am only able to handle a #2 reed for now with a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece. It does make it easy to play, and that helps me. But I am just curious about other mouthpieces and reed setups that advanced players like yourself use. Thanks again for your help and great music.

I'm playing F# natural minor scale (F#-G#-A-B-C#-D-E) and F# blues scale (F#-G#-B-C-C#-E) on alto sax (tune is in Am for C instruments so F#m for alto sax which is a Eb instrument). For the gear I use a Meyer jazz mouthpiece with a Vandoren ZZ 3 reed. The jazz mouthpiece is a must-have and plays a big role in the final tone. The force you're using on the reed doesn't matter much in my opinion, you can use the one you are the most comfortable with. Hope this helps !

I was learning this song from another TH-cam video and the instructor was teaching the song in A minor scale, but when I tried to play along with you a little I noticed I was not using the same notes. He is teaching the song to a beginning saxophone player, so I guess he used A minor because there are not sharp keys involved to make it easier for a beginner? Thanks again and I will look forward to hearing you play more.
@@timbarnes3581 Maybe he transposed the instrumental and melody in Cm so you can play the song in Am on the alto sax ? In any case, I play in the original key of the song which is Am (F#m on alto sax). Could you send me the video so I can confirm you ? :)
