I poked around Le Internet, and found the walnuts you are using are called English walnuts, formerly Persian walnuts. They are grown for their nuts, so the tree matures slower. There is also a wild species called black walnuts, and white walnut, each on different sides of the States. They grow much more quickly and used for timber, rather than their nuts. They are supposed to have a bolder flavor than English walnuts but both are good to eat. Those giant walnut shells you found were probably just a particularly big harvest of nuts and they wound up being saved out of amusement. They look like English walnuts too. Walnut trees kill off ground vegetation, so they are bad for gardens. And black walnut shells used to be boiled in order to make ink! It's the exact ink the Declaration of Independence was written with! Walnuts are also the highest concentration of Omega 3s in nature. What a useful tree!

I had a couple of Christmas ornaments I bought in Mexico almost 50 years ago that were made of odds and ends, but mainly were nut shells. Someone had sawn 3/4 down the walnut shell on each side of the ridge going around the middle. They sawed the two pieces in half, and using wire, made hinges to reattach them to the shell. Now the walnut had 4 little doors. The inside of the shell was painted and using more little pieces of wire, string, construction paper, and a tiny bit of glitter the constructed a wedding scene in one nut and a bullfight in the other nut. A closure to keep the doors shut was made from a bit of cut out tin can and a wire loop. The outside was left natural. They made cute little Christmas ornaments.

These are precious! You're so beautifully talented. I'm so happy to now be part of the miniature community. Those of us in this amazing community just get it..those outside just don't. My fascination began way back as a young girl, about 6 or 7....I'm now 61 and I just love everything about this craft. Thank you again for sharing your ideas and creative spirit. O M G !!!!!! Thank you for showing the water trick to open them! I have searched everywhere for weeks on how to get them to open perfectly - butter knife alone at top, nope not a perfect crack; exacto blade, nope takes forever and not a perfect crack; jewelers micro saw, nope takes forever and you actually make a false seam. I am cooking a bowl right now to try your trick...fingers crossed!

that is SO awesome!! Thank you for taking the time to comment. The other day I decided to boil some for a few hours and that was enough to open them, no additional soaking needed but you do need to keep an eye on the pot so it doesn't boil dry and run them under cold water while cracking open since the hot water does get inside and can burn your fingers.

Every video you make is pure magic, but I truly love this one! I looked online for walnuts and they were so expensive here in the US. I have found the easiest and cheapest way to get them is from my local grocery store. They are currently $1.99 per pound, so I chose the best ones and paid just pennies each! My shells are drying right now and I cannot wait to create with them! Thank you SO MUCH for showing us the different hinge methods. Such a great tutorial and video. I love how relaxing it is to watch! 💕💕💕

These are really cute. I've always loved miniatures. As a suggestion, if you make a lot of these, buy a set of jewelry pliers. They are very affordable, maybe $10 for a whole set. They are much smaller and will make it much easier to get in small spaces. Also, when you're using polymer clay, the only time you need a foil base, is if you're baking a thick piece that's prone to cracking. These pieces are small, so foil isn't really necessary. So, if you're having problems with the clay over foil being too bulky, you can eliminate the foil and just make the figure from clay.

With E-6000, you can use a dab of hot glue to hold the bit in place while it cures.
In the final bit shown, you might put the E-6000 on the screw holes as you did, then a dab of hot glue on the same plate between them and press it into the shell. The hot glue will harden quickly and hold it in place while the E-6000 cures.

I always buy E6000 and super glue in packs of 3 or 4 small tubes instead of the larger tube. It probably works out to be a bit more expensive, but it eliminates the glue drying in the tube between uses. I've never found an effective way to keep those adhesives 'fresh'.

So much fun. Great way for opening the shells. Do you still eat the nuts after being boiled? I know people eat boiled peanuts, so I wasn't sure about walnuts.. heh I'll bet if you reduced that water down a bit, after you've finished, it would make a great stain or ink. Could use it to dye paper, or fabric, you want to distress a bit. Would love to know if you try it out. Thanks so much for sharing. I love these little guys!!

This was amazing! This is like 6!tutorials in one. Btw I work with polymer clay and if you’re parts stick together, if you can press a bit, you don’t need the glue. Especially since you’re not making something to wear so it won’t get messed with.
Anyway you have a new subscriber and now I’m thinking how to make walnut lockets.

Your works remind me sooo much of my childhood hero Rien Poortvliet. He is a dutch artist who was famous for his fantastic artworks of gnomes, nature and animals. He made lots of books about the life of a gnome, how they live, eat, build and work etc. I don't know if they got one in English version. I looked it up and stumbled uppon a book called Gnomes. The illustrations are truly beautiful and remind me so much of your work!

Sharon has at least one of his books and has shown it on this channel. Her flip through of the book caused me to end up ordering one for myself. I particularly love his explanation of the female gnome anatomy and why some parts don't sag.
