Funny that the first thing I thought about when Rory and Amy vanished forever was not the Doctor and how he felt, but Rory's dad who would never know what happened. Glad that this short film exists, it definetly needed closure.
It's a shame that this was never properly shot, but I'm so glad that Arthur Darvill was able to do the voice over. Going by my full on cry session just now, he did an amazing job.
This is reminds me of the Blink episode, where Sally's friend disappears, and then a letter is delivered to Sally by her descendant detailing how the Angels sent her back in time.
It is common in a lot of Time stories. Back to the future 2, Marty see's the Delorian hit by lightning, then a few seconds after, a courier delivers a letter, from The Doc, in the past. Blink - Cathy is sent to the past by the Angel, just as her Grandson delivers the letter, to Sally, at the Wester Drumlin Mansion. This, Amy and Rory's adopted Son delivering their letter, to their father / Stepfather, his grandfather.
This literally broke my heart as I was talking to my dad about it once when doing a rewatch of Doctor who and got to series 7 I said how it was sad that Brian told them to go with the doctor and that literally in their next adventure die and he never knew. so it’s nice to see that this is a fitting conclusion to the episode which they should have released in the dvd as an extra. Or shot it as a special Minisode. I cried Ahah I love the ponds but im glad that they had a happy ending xx
This is probably the best short that they had for this series. It bring more closure to the episode and tied in Brian who was somewhat involved in the Doctor's affairs. It also shows that Brian would not be alone since he got to meet his grandson and spend the rest of his time with him. I really really wish they added this into the episode as a extra long special or just have it acted out as a Doctor Who Short.

The thing with Chris Chibnall is that he's a good writer when he's writing for other people's characters but rarely hits the mark when he has to make his own characters. Brian is the main exception

I like how they didn't magically end up with another baby, but took the pragmatic route and simply adopted. Although I wonder if Anthony ever met his big sister. Still, given how long Rory has been dreaming of being a father, it was rather emotionally satisfying to see him finally get his wish/ get to actually raise a kid.
Adoption: that's a good point. Because Amy told Rory that she could not go through with having a kid again, but it might be different if they adopted. She might have been able to handle adopting a kid, just not being pregnant and giving birth.
ser132 I don't think she meant that in the sense of being unable to handle it emotionally, but that she was literally rendered infertile as a side-effect of all the experimenting/modifying Kovarian's henchmen did on Baby!River while still in the womb.

I don't know if I could have handled this in the episode. The Doctor begging Amy to come into the TARDIS while both are in tears is one of the saddest scenes I've ever watched.
They'd already caused a paradox - and we witnessed elderly Rory die, which was a fixed point in time. The Doctor can never go back and rescue either of them.

But no. They do stuff like this. And it really irritates me. another example is the twelfth doctor who was really responsible for bill potts getting a hole blown into her chest, and then being converted into the early version of the cyberman. the doctor casually put his feet up in the tardis and had missy lead the mission along with bill. missy had a sonic screwdriver in her umbrella, and the doctor had sonic screwdriver and shades, either of which capable of disarming that stupid idiot who shoots bill. weve seen the eleventh doctor using sonic blasts from the screwdriver to blast weapons out of the hands of opponents all the time. and the twelfth doctor's sonic tech is totally equal to the eleventh's.he should have disarmed the man's weapon, then got them all back on the tardis and departed.

The same angle typically (I do believe ALWAYS) zaps people back to the same relative instant of the past (lucky eh? though to be fair they introduced that rule in Blink, so it's less plot convenience and more legit luck)

I've been re-watching Doctor Who on Amazon Prime and just watched the dinosaurs in space episode, so had to come to youtube to watch this again.
This is making me cry. It was my dad's 75th birthday just yesterday, and three days ago his older brother passed away suddenly. My mum and dad have gone to my uncle's funeral in the country. He was the only sibling in Australia; the others lived in England and he's only got two other siblings left, AFAIK. The last time he would have seen them in person (except the brother) was in 1987, when we flew to England. He at least got the opportunity to see his brother a couple years ago. A picture they took at the time indicated that my uncle had not done so well, probably due to heavy drinking and smoking; you'd honestly think they were father and son, how old my uncle looked. In 1997, they looked very similar. I don't always get along with my dad, and a great many things about him royally shit me off at times, but this makes me cry. I want to hug him. At least he's got a grandson on the way, sometime this month. I'm gonna be an uncle!
This is the best thing he ever wrote for DW in my opinion, a touching, well performed goodbye. It helps that for me, his best episodes were when he was writing for the 11, Amy & Rory combo.
It's episodes like this that really convince me that Chibnall was screwed over by higher ups when he was writing for 13, because he's clearly a very good writer but so many moments in 13s run (especially the first season) are just so clunky and awkward, and I think that's because he was told he had to include at least X amount of representation for different things and address X number of issues and so he tried to stuff them in which makes them feel forced
@@J75Pootle I don't think that's true at all, he's demonstrated he's capable of good writing in bursts but if you look at his earlier Doctor Who contributions (which are awful), the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Broadchurch and a lot of the mixed bag that is Torchwood, he just isn't up to the task of writing consistently well
This is what I love this show! It's not only about "An alien man travelling through time and space with human companions", it's also about the consequences in the lives of those human companion and the choices they make. Beautiful video by the way!
because before the events of A good man goes to war, apparently the woman with the patch and his team make Amy steril, something like that she says in the episode Asylum of the daleks, that's why they can't have more childrens :(

I didn't like how the Ponds died by jumping off a building, but they survived, but OH WAIT they died because the paradox didn't kill every Angel. It's like, write one ending for your episode, Moffat. Don't make the audience invest emotionally in one ending, then yank it away and replace it with a different one.
TheKiss Rory got a shit send off aswell, when he jumped, the Doctor didn't even call his name, and then that angel just took him by surprise, and then that was it, Amy got all the emotions, and big send off, fuck all for Rory

A touching tribute to the characters. I really like this ! Yes, as improvised as this is, it brings at least some sence of closure in regards to Rory's closest relatives. Good work.

Character development and expansion is what Chibnall is best at, he understands these characters, especially how to write the doctor, this and Whitaker’s talent as an actor is what makes me super excited for series 11
I'm so glad they released this even though they couldn't film it; It's such a nice nod to the original weeping angel episode, Brian was too awesome for us to never find out what became of him, and it was nice for Rory to get a little character moment all to himself. This does make me wonder, however, if Brian (and Tabetha and Augustus, for that matter) ever found out about River. Given that Anthony lived in new York, he might actually have run into her younger self at some point, or she could have visited him after their parents were dead.
This was great. Sad, but still amazing. I think that the saddest part about this is that there's no mention of River. You can tell, just from the way Rory talks about Anthony, that Brian doesn't know about her, and now he never will. He may know about one grandchild, but there's still another out there he's never even met and doesn't even know anything about. That's the sad thing.
Ontos I actually really liked 42, and thought the Silurian two parter was good as well, but more importantly this short highlights Chibnalls strengths in his writing that shows even in his lackluster episodes (non of them have been outright terrible at the very least)
Why? Just why? Was this never shot?! This was an ending that actually respected Rory as a character and gave him a proper ending! I might have forgived all of the plot holes and badly written stuff if this scene had actually been there! Screw you Moffat :'(
I can think of a couple of reasons: The first is that the episode already had an ending--Amy's afterword in the book. Having effectively two endings weakens both of them. And as much as I liked Rory, the Amy/Doctor relationship was more important for the story than the Rory/Brian one. The second was that they already used the "letter delivered by a relative" device in "Blink". It's clever, but it becomes less clever the more often it's used.
It was actually just because they ran out of time and never got the chance to film it and all. He was a busy man! Working for the ministry of magic and all.
The emotional impact of the scene speaks far greater volumes than being 'clever' ever will. Not to mention that it touches upon something the show jettisoned along with the rest of the RTD Era. Consequences of what The Doctor's life can do to impact the loved ones of his companions.
@@TheSkully343 Solidus-Skully I believe the Moffat Era dealt with those issues even more than the Davies era. I found that a lot of what I remember from the RTD's era focuses on the Doctor's problems and how they affect him, whereas most of what I remember from Moffat's run focuses on how the Doctor impacts other people. though, both runs focus on both thos aspects, I believe that Moffat does more with the affects on other characters than Davies does. That being said, i have definitely re-watched more Moffat run stuff than RTD run.
For those asking, this scene was never shot because one of the actors availability fell through. I'm assuming it was Mark Williams, because if it was the guy playing Anthony they'd have been able to replace him easily.

They died but it wasn’t because of the Doctor. He tried his best to save them both but they just…..lived out their lives in the past and they were happy ones.
Chris Chibnall please bring this passion into series 12. I understand what you were trying to do with series 11, but I think some emotional storytelling like this can really enhance Doctor 13 and her companions story.

Because Moffat doesn't give a shit about Rory, he just loved Amy. When they both jumped off of the building, the Doctor never called Rory's name, only Amy's. Did the Doctor even care about Rory?

And, to be honest, the Amy/Doctor ending is more important to the story.The second thing is that they already did the "letter from long ago" in "Blink". It's the kind of plot device that works, but only if it's used very sparingly. It can't become a thing that always happens when someone ends up stuck back in time.
Every Doctor Who episode Chiball wrote is the same. Just look at them. There's some companion in danger, there's a countdown, and the Doctor essentially solves the say by waving his sonic screwdriver around a bit.

this should have been filmed... They got rory to read the letter aloud, but they couldnt get the actors to do this little minisode :( imagine if this happened right at the end of the episode. it would have been so terrible sad
Makes me cry every time.... I think it is one of the most beautiful scenes and that the story board scene gives that closure to the Amy/Rory arc and for Brian coz I don't think the Doctor in his own grief would have thought of going back and telling him

It's would be awesome if Peter Capaldi, right before his regeneration scene, saved the ponds somehow. Maybe he could sent them a letter to go back to a different location I.E England where he could pick them up and return them, That would be awesome and I hope Chris does small things like that just to fill gaps
Why i just found this... I am crying.. I was so into Doctor Who 5-7 seasons. And really in that 3 ppl. After that I never watched Doctor Who... my childhood memories with Doctor Who. Especially Doctor & Amy & Rory
Wonderfully sad and beautiful. I smiled and cried watching this. Really wish they'd filmed this. Poor Brian, at least he had Anthony. I do hope River popped back to see him from time to time before she too died.

I think it is only true for heartbreaking scenes, such as this and Exit Wounds in Torchwood.
I think it’s more to writing character-driven stories. Science fiction isnt really his forte

I've been re-watching Doctor Who on Amazon Prime and just watched the dinosaurs in space episode, so had to come to youtube to watch this again.

It was my dad's 75th birthday just yesterday, and three days ago his older brother passed away suddenly. My mum and dad have gone to my uncle's funeral in the country. He was the only sibling in Australia; the others lived in England and he's only got two other siblings left, AFAIK. The last time he would have seen them in person (except the brother) was in 1987, when we flew to England.
He at least got the opportunity to see his brother a couple years ago. A picture they took at the time indicated that my uncle had not done so well, probably due to heavy drinking and smoking; you'd honestly think they were father and son, how old my uncle looked. In 1997, they looked very similar.
I don't always get along with my dad, and a great many things about him royally shit me off at times, but this makes me cry. I want to hug him. At least he's got a grandson on the way, sometime this month. I'm gonna be an uncle!

This is the best thing he ever wrote for DW in my opinion, a touching, well performed goodbye.
It helps that for me, his best episodes were when he was writing for the 11, Amy & Rory combo.

It's episodes like this that really convince me that Chibnall was screwed over by higher ups when he was writing for 13, because he's clearly a very good writer but so many moments in 13s run (especially the first season) are just so clunky and awkward, and I think that's because he was told he had to include at least X amount of representation for different things and address X number of issues and so he tried to stuff them in which makes them feel forced
@@J75Pootle I don't think that's true at all, he's demonstrated he's capable of good writing in bursts but if you look at his earlier Doctor Who contributions (which are awful), the 2nd and 3rd seasons of Broadchurch and a lot of the mixed bag that is Torchwood, he just isn't up to the task of writing consistently well

I didn't like how the Ponds died by jumping off a building, but they survived, but OH WAIT they died because the paradox didn't kill every Angel. It's like, write one ending for your episode, Moffat. Don't make the audience invest emotionally in one ending, then yank it away and replace it with a different one.
TheKiss Rory got a shit send off aswell, when he jumped, the Doctor didn't even call his name, and then that angel just took him by surprise, and then that was it, Amy got all the emotions, and big send off, fuck all for Rory

That's kind of how Rory was treated for most of his time on the show, tbh. That's one of the reasons I didn't like the Ponds much. Rory was much more likeable than Amy but he never got anything interesting to do. He was always just wandering off or getting killed or captured so Amy could be cool.
TheKiss I like both of them equally, and I like that they introduced Rory's Dad to give him more of a life. But yeah, you do get the feeling The Doctor didn't even like Rory

Character development and expansion is what Chibnall is best at, he understands these characters, especially how to write the doctor, this and Whitaker’s talent as an actor is what makes me super excited for series 11

I'm so glad they released this even though they couldn't film it; It's such a nice nod to the original weeping angel episode, Brian was too awesome for us to never find out what became of him, and it was nice for Rory to get a little character moment all to himself.
This does make me wonder, however, if Brian (and Tabetha and Augustus, for that matter) ever found out about River.
Given that Anthony lived in new York, he might actually have run into her younger self at some point, or she could have visited him after their parents were dead.
I am crying... But I am also really happy that Brian got to hear from Rory one last time...

I think that the saddest part about this is that there's no mention of River. You can tell, just from the way Rory talks about Anthony, that Brian doesn't know about her, and now he never will. He may know about one grandchild, but there's still another out there he's never even met and doesn't even know anything about. That's the sad thing.

Ontos I actually really liked 42, and thought the Silurian two parter was good as well, but more importantly this short highlights Chibnalls strengths in his writing that shows even in his lackluster episodes (non of them have been outright terrible at the very least)

Why? Just why? Was this never shot?! This was an ending that actually respected Rory as a character and gave him a proper ending! I might have forgived all of the plot holes and badly written stuff if this scene had actually been there! Screw you Moffat :'(
I can think of a couple of reasons:
The first is that the episode already had an ending--Amy's afterword in the book. Having effectively two endings weakens both of them. And as much as I liked Rory, the Amy/Doctor relationship was more important for the story than the Rory/Brian one.
The second was that they already used the "letter delivered by a relative" device in "Blink". It's clever, but it becomes less clever the more often it's used.
It was actually just because they ran out of time and never got the chance to film it and all. He was a busy man! Working for the ministry of magic and all.
The emotional impact of the scene speaks far greater volumes than being 'clever' ever will.
Not to mention that it touches upon something the show jettisoned along with the rest of the RTD Era. Consequences of what The Doctor's life can do to impact the loved ones of his companions.

@@TheSkully343 Solidus-Skully I believe the Moffat Era dealt with those issues even more than the Davies era. I found that a lot of what I remember from the RTD's era focuses on the Doctor's problems and how they affect him, whereas most of what I remember from Moffat's run focuses on how the Doctor impacts other people. though, both runs focus on both thos aspects, I believe that Moffat does more with the affects on other characters than Davies does. That being said, i have definitely re-watched more Moffat run stuff than RTD run.
For those asking, this scene was never shot because one of the actors availability fell through. I'm assuming it was Mark Williams, because if it was the guy playing Anthony they'd have been able to replace him easily.

Plus I'm not that down about Doctor Who anymore, I went and found a lovely time travel gem called 12 Monkeys (TV series not the movie but it's still kinda cool). One of Best Time Travel stories out there imo.

what in the tardis made them not put this at the end! i felt disappointed with angels take Manhattan because i loved rory and amy and they were my favorite companions and it felt like they had the worst ending.

Every Doctor Who episode Chiball wrote is the same. Just look at them. There's some companion in danger, there's a countdown, and the Doctor essentially solves the say by waving his sonic screwdriver around a bit.
