Last Sweet Potato Harvest of 2023! Community Garden Edition
This season, our community garden produced a great deal of food for us, and this 2023 sweet potato harvest video proves that we can also grow huge sweet potatoes in this allotment garden plot as well, but it also showed us some of the problems that we encounter in this space as well.
We have grown so many different sweet potato varieties this year, and Georgia Jet sweet potatoes are some of our favorites, and we found a way to really reduce the difficulty of the harvest in the clay soil of our community garden; however, we didn't think the voles would be as vicious in this plot as they were this year.
We lost many sweet potatoes or parts of sweet potatoes in this sweet potato harvest 2023 to the voles; however, given how these were some of the biggest sweet potatoes we have grown, we are going to adapt and attempt to grow more sweet potatoes in ground in our community allotment gardening plot next season.

I just cant believe how they have access to just such a large variety of fruits , trees and plants. Feels like they live in paradise. Fresh produce right on their door step , surrounded by nature and enjoyed together in a close knit family and community! All the money in the world cant buy what they have.

Have you tried castor oil? Wayland Smalley in Oklahoma uses it on his root crop garden.
I grow four varieties of sweet potatoes Garnet, Purple, Hannah and Japanese. Will be harvesting my Purple ones next week. Happy Gardening 🧑‍🌾 from Southern California.

I metal hardware cloth box dug into the ground and hardware cloth top with your mounding dirt under the hardware, I bet you'll get a great harvest.

Take care some cats... That's what we do here in Philippines, and our sweet potatoes are not damage... I have 4 cats that guard my potatoes & other crops in my backyard

I need to start my sweet potatoes earlier. I only harvested a few big ones; the rest of them are smaller.

I just could not deal with all that vole damage! So disappointing. Last Winter there was a big stink in my garden after the big freeze. I hope the stinker was not a vole.

Luckily, I don't have a vole problem with growing sweet potatoes. I have to give credit to my backyard Vole Patrol: four cats and five shih tzu puppers that constantly patrol my backyard garden and keep the vole population low. I live in a rural area, so I think I'd have a big vole problem without my Vole Patrol.

I did try growing sweet potatoes this year. But it was not very successful. I tried to put them in the ground but I think there were just too many roots from other plants in the way. I think I'm going to do what you did this next time around by putting a nice mound of dirt.
