It's the same setup on the 73 Case 580B down at the daughters lake house but I've never had to get into them, so this setup is new territory to me too. The potential for a final drive issue is the specific reason I wanted to get this assembly removed. Now I know there's nothing to worry about in there so its back to serious stuff next. I've gotten a couple suggestions for reliable parts already from a couple guys, but I'm going to wait and see how big the list is....and the suspicion it gonna be big is proving to be real !! Thanks for the supportive comment my friend....kind words are always appreciated. ....now where's that other nickel. I got some stuff to buy.....LOL Private joke, huh. (-;
Good job buddy got that problem straightened out hope the stuck motor fees up that easy fingers crossed and we were very very lucky from the hurricane only lost power here about 4 hours but a lot of people still has not got it back Nova Scotia and New Found Land got hit real hard have a great day take care stay safe
I sure am glad to hear you guys made it with no damage. I am waiting to hear how Reg Sparks made out in his area in Newfoundland. I've got a few buddies in Nova Scotia too. I'm thinking we need more that a little luck on the motor being an easy one though.... We will see soon.

Did I tell you there are SEVEN members of my immediate family that are teachers...? My son and I are the only two that are not. We are literally surrounded by 'em !! He and I both hated school with a passion....but we LOVE our teachers. LOL

Hi Wendell! Good troubleshooting, my friend! That’s an interesting brake design. I assume pushing the brake pedal pulls that band around the brake drum. Looking forward to seeing you fix it!
I don't know the exact sequence, but there's a set of balls in there too that come into play. But we will figure it out once we get into the disassembly.

Yes Bobby, it sure looked like it to me. I'm thinking the brakes got a little hot at some time or other....I'd suggest heavy braking on a downhill run with a heavy load in road gear. I should have let you know I had a video on how to maintain those brakes!!! Lol! It's video #34 on my page. The bolt you remove at the mark of 1:15 need not be removed at that point, it only supports the brake shoes. I don't know how far you dismantled this at that point, but it's a fairly easy principle to understand once dismantled. It is kind of a mechanical power brake. As for the oil seal, I wish I had a video of it when I changed it. You will notice a second plate against the side of the transmission. It holds the oil seal. The plate is held in place by a simple 3/8" countersunk Phillips screw. This plate has a flange on the inner side, with an O-ring seal. When you remove that plate, the shaft is then almost loose, revealing the taper bearing. Of course, it's better to drain the transmission before... Lol! Thanks!
Yeah, I saw that as soon as the assembly came off that that was just a pivot pin. I haven't disassembled it any further since removal. It's just on the cart. I'm still frying the bigger fish in the motor.... When I determined there was definitely a more serious problem in the engine, I thought it best to make sure there was or was not a bigger issue in the final drive before proceeding. Thanks for the tips on the seal, and I am sure I will reference back to your video when its time.

Dont know anything about the 430 brakes. We have some VAC case tractors. And the one that has band brakes is a older tractor however it has much better brakes than the one with disk brakes. on your430 possibly that band locks the outer drum causing wedges or ball s to tighten the disk?
Yes, I believe there IS a set of balls in there and I'm sure that's about how its supposed to work....I haven't disassembled it yet. The main thing was to remove it to make sure there was no final drive issue before getting deeper into the motor. I sure liked it when the axle turned the countershaft. Nothing to be concerned about in there at least.
I've had to set this whole project on the back burner for a while John...working on it as time is available. I'm sourcing new parts for the brakes though. It doesn't look to be very expensive too which is great !!
Its one of the newest in MY stable...of course not counting the Kubota trio. I'd momentarily forgotten the '72 Ford 2000 on the other video....and the '73 Case hoe. LOL Old age is hell Eric...just plain hell.

This is a first time in a new tractor for me too. Most of mine are from the 40's and 50's. Lots of improvements for sure in just a few short years.
