Sweet Potatoes Grown In Straw Bales - Huge No Dig Harvest, Red Garnet

  • I've grown sweet potatoes in straw bales for a few years now. Some varieties seem to do much better than others. Red Garnet did very well for us last year, and it did great for us again this year. I've grown close to a dozen types of sweet potatoes, and next year, I plan to stick to the types that have worked the best for me. As you will see in this video, harvesting sweet potatoes that are grown in straw bales is a simple as it gets. You just move the straw aside and pull the sweet potatoes out. Not only are they easy to harvest, but they come out cleaner looking than when grown in the soil.
    If you like to grow sweet potatoes, let us know what type you like to grow. You never know, if I haven't grown them before, I might give them a try. Thanks for watching!

    That’s an awesome harvest. The harvesting process looked seamless and easy. I like small-sized violet coloured sweet potatoes (they’ve a violet coloured flesh-don’t know what variety they are) as I find them sweeter than the other ones. On another note, did you ever try sweet potato leave/vine curries? These leaves and vines are edible and taste real good. Enjoy the weekend, mate. Cheers!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even though I intended to, and thought of it several times, I never did get around to trying some of the leaves. This year both in the garden and out, I think I bit off way more than I could chew.... or had way too many irons in the fire as I like to say. There are still some vines trying to grow in a few places, so I guess I still have a little time left. I'm going to try to make myself scale back next year. Hope you have a great weekend!

    This year was my first time growing sweet potatoes. I grew Beauregards and had them in-ground with a lot of straw mulch. From 6 plants I had a full 5 gallon bucket so I was really pleased! The Red Garnet are a beautiful color, I may have to check those out for next year.

    Those are some beautiful sweet potatoes! I usually grow Korean sweet potatoes from the grocery store, and they do pretty well. I love how clean potatoes are coming out of your straw bale. I have to try it.

      Thanks! Yep, the grocery store is where I got our original Garnet Red. We get scurf on them a lot of times when we grow them in the ground, so seeing them clean looking is quite a treat.

    How do you cure yours at home? Do you put them in a room with a space heater and a humidifier or what? I didn't cure mine last year and they all rotted

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have a good way of doing it. I usually just put them in the shed for a couple of weeks while the weather is still warm. That usually does ok for the temperature, but doesn't get the humidity right. This year, I experimented with covering them with a tarp with planter saucer under it with a wet cloth in it. That did help a lot with the humidity.

      The way I look at it, you should do whatever you have to do when it comes to safety. I'm not really sure if it would have much impact on harvest. I've never really tested it. I thought I should mention....when ours starts getting out into the grass, I just mow it down.

      I usually by the weather. If a hard freeze is expected, I cut them down and cover them up before it freezes. For the Musa bajoo, I have waited till after a couple of light frosts before I put them to bed for the winter.

    I grow a variety the Korean groceries sell here. They are red skin but white flesh. If i were guessing I'd say they are Murasaki. This year i grew them in grow bags. 1-20 gallon and 4 -10 gallon bags produced 26 lbs. I was pretty happy with the results. I did fertilize them with 6 12 12.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @shirleyk623

    That was a pretty good haul for the garnet reds. What a shame about the others. In my experience all those vines make me think I've got a lot of potatoes, but that's not always true.
    Mine are currently growing partially in a 150lb grow bag, but I can't keep it open. The sides keep flopping over.
    I've got white flies again. I pulled a lot of the vines up to get rid the white flies. I'd rather have aphids or spider mites any day lol. They're easier to get rid of.
    Would you recommend trimming excessive vines to give more nutrients to the slips, I have a lot of extra crawling vines.
    Maybe next year will be better. Take care and have a great weekend.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those dang whiteflies. We don't have them nearly as bad as we did last year. I'm sure glad. I only trim the sweet potato vines that try to invade the main garden space. On the other side of the bales, I let them grow quite a bit. When they start going out into the grass too far, I just mow them over when I'm mowing. You have a great weekend too!

    Do you think the folliage of the Garnet Red out competed the other varieties and that is why the other varieties did not do well?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The others produced plenty of vines too, so I don't think that was it. I also grew sweet potatoes in 4 other bales this year. Those bales didn't have the Garnets in them, and none of them did as well. The only one that came somewhat close was a purple variety.

      They are correct. It is possible for Straw, Hay, Compost or Manure to have herbicides in them. That is why it is important to check out your source before buying. I use straw because it is less likely, and I also asked the seller/owner of the store about it before I bought them.
