      What I can't get my head around is Nigel, that your quite happy under the grounds of 'informed choice' where this slippery slope will end? Take it you have children? Would you be happy, under pressure from sponsors, 'venture capitalists' and apparently people with your world view to pump stimulants, diuretics or what ever into their bodies, compete against other athletes who might have better access to funding, and with it access to better drugs, so they can enjoy a lifetime of side effects or worse.
      It isn't the cheating aspect why doping is frowned upon, the long term health and welfare costs that Mr d'Souza will not be carried by him and his colleagues, because the athletis were "informed" so releasing them of any responsibility.
      It might come as a surprise to you, but ten's of thousands of kids are already awash in drugs used in the treatment of ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, as well as easy access "daddies secret stash" of pot and coke. Think that's working out well? I am all for drug research and advancement, but when you have no rules, only the strong survive.

    This was a very interesting discussion. It's impressive listening to intelligent people like Simon and Aron thinking quickly and articulating their points and counter arguments so well.
    I think the enhanced games would have to be seriously impressive to draw in consumers. If world records aren't being shattered by the enhanced athletes, noone is going to care.

    • @outofthetrash5925
      @outofthetrash5925 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      World records are being smashed by enhanced athletes. They're just pretending to be clean. The issue this organisation will have is that top athletes currently winning things and are doping will not want to join to keep up the facade so their own enhanced records will still be above the records of those being honest about it in this organisation who are still behind genetically.
      What you'll get then is people saying "see the *clean* athletes are still better".
      Were sensible conversations over PED's had years ago, this wouldn't be happening. In the Olympics caffeine could be consumed before a race whilst cannabis can not. How ridiculous is that? I can tell you which one would be beneficial and which one wouldn't. Then take into consideration a lot of people are quite sensitive to caffeine and would not use it. Now one person has an advantage that another doesn't.
      Things like peptoids are banned when they are used to speed up and better healing of injuries. So an athlete who needs to recover in time would be cheating despite gaining no other advantage (other than some peptides do help you sleep better which is one mechanism by which they work).
      There has been calls for years for PED's to be allowed in cycling as not only is it obvious that almost everyone is using them but given how detrimental that sport is to the body, it's actually SAFER to be using certain compounds.
      I do understand the combat sport argument but the caveat is that if both competitors are using, they can both better absorb blows as well as dishing them out. There will always be a possibility of mortality in combat sports and it should be considered that most athletes could take what they like and never be able to hit as hard as Wilder or Mike Tyson with their God given power. Yet we still sanction people to fight them.
      As I say, I'm 50/50 on the combat sports thing but for the rest of sports, to have an organisation where its all open and fair I'm totally on board with.

    Its not exactly a new idea. Even I had this idea about 20 years ago.. I'd definitely watch it! But I think it could lead to serious problems because the athletes will take more and more and more to try and get an advantage. It will very quickly get close to dangerous levels. So even if it did get going it wouldn't last long due people having heart attacks during events and/or large amounts of athletes dying during training or at a very early age in general. But I'd still watch it.

    • @T0AD0FT0ADHALL
      @T0AD0FT0ADHALL 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This is naïve. More doesn't = more. The professionals have known that for decades, most of them (in the majority of sports) are on a cocktail of substances that the average Joe will never touch, and not all of them will have dire consequences to those athletes longevity. Even in local gyms, wannabe competitive bodybuilders know a huge amount about proper dosing and cycling of a plethora of substances. The issue is when inexperienced/idiotic people get hold of them and take the 'more is more' approach, but that will happen regardless. Would this sort of games create a pressure for more young kids to take PEDs? Maybe. But it's clearly rife now anyway, maybe open information will help inform some better practices.

      Very naive take. Athletes and sports science is already aware of the hyper optimised doses for performances which is almost always a less is more situation. Maybe what your saying would have happened in the 70s but athletes and there teams today know that going overboard would only harm performance more than help.

    • @mattw4176
      @mattw4176 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bj11755 Optimised doses for performance are very likely not the same as optimised doses for long term, or even short term health. I don't think I'm naïve, I've been alive long enough to know there will be people who will do whatever it takes to be a superhuman even if it will likely shorten their lifespan by 30-40 years, and there will be people who will happily let them do it if it lines their pockets at the same time.

    The science behind doping to some level is that it is actually healthier, aiding in recovery, prevent injuries, etc. whilst this MAY be true to a degree, my main concern is that by setting no limits and inviting doped athletes it will essentially result an arms race of supra physiological doping which moves objectively out of any arguable health parameters and is only concerned with performance - athletes are forced to increase dosages/take more dangerous compounds in order to compete and none of it is to the benefit of the athletes’ health, in fact it will be very much to the contrary

    I have to say that so many people have such short memories. Most Eastern Bloc teams during the Cold War conducted massive doping programmes. Sure in the short term, these got success, but in the long term, the health of many of the athletes involved has been catastrophic, Rica Reinisch is an excellent example. We have already seen former athletes suffer increased risk of cardiovascular disease, liver problems, violent mood swings, extreme masculinising effects in females and a clear link with certain forms of cancer.
    One only has to go into your average gym, where performance enhancing drugs is readily available, to see the amount of mentally unstable, acne riven, breast enlarged men kicking the sh*t out of their partners, before getting a choker in the middle of ASDA.
    What I find more is curious are lots of people are rightly squeamish about puberty blockers been injected into teens, some people been concerned regarding vaccinations, and a general suspicion of Big Pharma in general, although I don't accept totally all the accusations laid against drug companies. Yet here it seems that people are quite relaxed about drugs pumped into athletes.
    As if to highlight the hypocrisy in the comments section. Why not stop there and get rid of gender regulated sports? After all these athletes are also subject to chemical enhancements? What about a Junior doping regime as practiced in East Germany? What about expanding it to football and rugby, where top teams can afford to get the best in scientists and performance enhancing technology, while you average League Two club struggles with non enhanced players?
    In the end, this will turn out to be another misguided, ill judged 'advancement' where in essence, sports men and women will just be biological F1 cars, to use a crude analogy, and the real winners will be pharmaceutical companies. However as we rush to the Huxleyan nightmare of 'Brave New World', I'd always stick to John the Savage, rather than a human lab running round a race track.
