My malinos is excellent in the car until I am joined by my adult son. Her prompt for the weekend hike. She seats calmly but is so excited that she 'sings' It is HELL. So I am going to try out short drives with son and then back home. Hoping that this will cancel her anticipation and VOICE. Wish me luck Ann UK
Look forward to trying some of your tips. My 4 year old dog has just recently started barking upon arrival on absolutely anywhere. Just slowing down or stopping she will start barking. So far I’ve just stopped the car and ignored her until she stops then continue. When we get home I drive past and around the block. Then again just sit there until she is quiet. I don’t seem to be getting very far with this method. So I’m going to start from scratch. Keys… door… drive way. I’ll update progress 😊
Thank you for the suggestions. I'm going to start some desensitization. My dog barks at everything but loves being in the car. She barks at the kids at the bus stop when I stop my son off. Going to start with using her hook again (attaches to the seatbelt so she has to stay close to the front). I will also park further back so we're not up front. We'll see how this works. I don't want to stop taking her places I've already stopped taking her to grocery pickups. 😢
with all your help I get from your courses I get managed to have 2 quiet dogs in 2 crates in my car BUT : I have the next problem : they start barking when I go out of the car ( f.e.to go to the bakery, or to the pharmacist ) for a few minutes . I manage to do as less purchases on the way home, as I can but nevertheless : I would like to learn them to be quiet when I am out of the car . Thanks for all your fantastic video's and podcasts . Thanks for the helpful information. My new rescue dog has crazy barrier aggression in the car it scared me. Covering the crate with a sheet worked like a charm. But I wasn’t sure if it was ok to continue doing long-term. Your video made me feel so much better. We are still working on her other behavior issues. It’s not easy. I’m glad I found you on TH-cam. Looking forward to watching your other videos. Thanks!
My Husky mix was IMPOSSIBLE. She shattered my front windshield (she was fine) got out of her seatbelt, powered down the windows and put the flashers on. What worked? I blasted Classical Music and guess who is perfectly behaved now?
you mentioned working with a dog that barked at stoplights- that is essentially what my 12 yr old sheltie does. she's fine as long as the car is moving but when we slow down for stop signs or lights or turns, she barks. sometimes once she starts, she keeps going.... She's in a crate in the back of the car- has ridden there for 8 yrs so not really sure what's her reason.
My dog is super chill in the car….until we are pulling into wherever we are going. ( Except when we get home. Then he’s dead silent and I’m scared I’ll forget him if I’m not in the habit of always checking the back seat.) But when we go to the park or something, then he gets so excited and starts barking right in my ears until we get out and it’s awful! Any advice on how to train him out of this in a way that saves my hearing and doesn’t mean sitting there while he makes my ears ring?
Hi Susan, your video motivates me to be more consequent in dealing ' the anticipation issue ' with my easily over excited dog. The approach we already are practicing ( sorry English is not my native language) is not getting out of the car when the dog is making any exciting noise. We notice a positive turn 'already'😀. It works but we have to built in more rewarding the good behaviour (in the car) as you explain. We will! The principle you describe can be adjusted for any anticipation excitement behaviour. Thanks a lot!
Thanks yet again Susan for your great wisdom. My welsh collie is so very vocal. Now I have some knowledge on how to help her in the car and leaving the house.
I've been able to CC my dog from barking at other dogs/people in the car, however - she goes back to being over threshold when I get out of the car and talk to someone. Is that protectiveness, barrier frustration or something else? She doesn't go over threshold if there isn't another person/dog that I'm interacting with, ONLY if I interact with another person/dog.
True story. My older dog needed a new crate and I need to get her used to it. We did search for treats and other games but she still did not want to spend time in it. I put her yummiest treats further back in the crate. This frustrated her. She would lean in for the easy treats but would circle the crate thing to figure out how to get the deep ones. She would look for help from me...but no. Then in frustration she bit the pillow in the crate....WELL...the pillow moved!!!!! So she spent 15 minutes slowly pulling the pillow out so she could have all her treats. SHE LOOKED VERY PLEASED WITH HER SELF AS SHE LAID DOWN ON HER PILLOW...OUTSIDE OF THE CRATE.
I will try some of your suggestions. It has gotten intolerable with our dog! She is a bully mix, very sweet, but it is WHEN WE STOP, at home, or at Walmart, anywhere, she will start carrying on, crying and barking. If we are in a parking lot and she sees people walking outside of the car, she barks ferociously at them. She has put nail marks in the plastic right below the windows. She was getting better before she had a surgery done to remove her dewclaws, and it seemed she got worse after that, and has gotten worse as time goes on. I will try kenneling her with a sheet over the kennel and give positive reinforcement when quiet. She hates being in the kennel, and I wouldn't mind her riding in the back seat if she was quiet and calm.... which she is until we park somewhere.
Its hard to remove the car ride, because I have to get to work and the dog needs to go to daycare. He has separation anxiety and gets upset when I start getting ready in the morning. He also gets very excited for daycare, even motioning directions left and right when on the way. I've changed my behaviors and tried to desensitize grabbing the keys and my showering schedule. Even take different routes to daycare. Bones worked for a bit, but he just finishes them faster just to cry and bark out the window. May try using a kennel with a blanket amd kong. Will also practice eating meals and chews in the car while in the parking lot. Barks are very loud in a 2 door wrangler.
I love this video but thebissue I am having is only when we pull into a parking lot and I think it's a mixture of excitement to go in a store or anxiety of being left in the car. Do you have any ideas?
A friend of mine has an Australian Shepherd. He always takes the dog to work with him, driving 3-4 hours daily. In the beginning, my friend made some serious mistakes, and the dog got into the habit of 'protecting' the car while driving. Only when the vehicle moves, he barks at everything and everyone - for hours. He jumps from side to side. He is even so 'over the top' that he would bite me if I tried to get in the car, and he knows me very well. So not only is he hyper and excited, but he gets aggressive in the car. How would you train this?
Thanks for this. Amazing. My Belgian shepherd was traumatized by his first car trip from the breeder to my house. I could not have him in the car until he was 6 month without vomiting and shaking. Today he is 2,5 yr old. We go to the hills to do free running tanta he loves but he barks all the journey at all the dogs he knows are behind neighbours fences. He still is afraid of the crate, which I gave up for he does not even get in… but I would love to be able to take him in a drive without histeria! Today I just made him sit on the dog bed in the car. We did not move for a while. Just little movements back and forth. He salivates a lot and barks even o side the yard.
Great video. I can see what I need to do, I just need a few more ideas. My dog is a Chihuahua-x and she is very excited by car travel. I take her almost everywhere and she is secured in a backpack which is clipped into the seatbelt on the passenger seat. She is great when we are moving and has got used to the car stopping in traffic but knows very well when I stop the car at the final destination. I have managed to get to the point where I turn off the engine. I sit still and wait for her to chill. Her bark is really piercing and it is painful but I have waited it out and now she does wait before she goes crazy. The final hurdle is tough, it is when I unclip the seatbelt that she knows "It is on!" and she really wants out! I have given her treats as I unclip to try and keep her distracted but she is so excited to get out that she eats the treats through her barks! Any further tips?
My dog goes crazy in the car and it is a mixture of anticipation and also triggers - if we drive past a dog he goes nuts. On the way home after the walk he is calmer but will still bark at dogs & buses! I do throw treats for him to find but it’s not always possible to do in time before he starts barking.
@@RaptorsGirl I am trying to find a suitable crate - the car does not have a big boot and I worry about the crate being too small for him but I will keep looking 🤞
Our Dog 'Bob' is triggers but also goes ballistic when we are dropping off my 11yr son or 13yr daughter at school or friends. If they stay in the car and I get out eg. at the petrol station he is relaxed.
We are watching the Podcast for Car Barking Reasons and I think we have some big challenges that we would love to have your advice on. We travel quite a bit during the week-to the Dog Park and to our cabin. My husband took the seats out of the back of our van (except for the back seat) and we literally have a traveling dog crate. This was done because our large older Pyrenees/Poodle-Poki rescue has mobility issues due to osteoarthritis. He also has digestive issues and when he needs to poop-he has trained us to stop by whining/barking because he needs to get out of the van as soon as possible. We also have a one year old rescue terrier mix-Eddie whom we have worked with because he had triggers whenever he saw dogs and sometimes people. Eddie was barking whenever he saw another dog and going to the dog park and classes has really helped with his socialization and reactivity so going there has been very important. Poki gets extremely excited and barks nonstop when we are going to cabin or dog park or the trail near the Y. For two of those places he usually doesn’t park until we are about a half mile away. So I have been sitting in the back of the van to calm Eddie (even though I love sitting up front with my husband. Eddie also has a seat belt but it is the third one because he snaps through it easily. Poki cannot get in and out of a crate easily or sit in the car seat due to his mobility issues. He has a soft dog bed on the floor and I try to calm him during the ride but he still gets overexcited by the end of the ride. I could use some more tips for soothing him. I am not sure it is ever going to be possible to sit in the front seat again. Thank you for you podcast .
Wow! Just what I needed! My dog punches the window when cars go by, while I’m driving. She also just started barking when the windshield wipers are on. Any suggestions? Help!
My dog barks out of no where and states to nip to get our attention but it’s extremely dangerous as he does it on freeway too and does not stop, he will continue to nip back of my arm and bark in my ear or trying to barge into the front seat, it’s extremely aggravating to my husband and myself, I make it as comfortable as possible in the back for him even has multiple chewing bones, antlers, toys, even kibble to keep him busy and he don’t care, even crack windows for fresh breeze or keep ac on (he’s a Husky) so I try keeping car temp cool for him, he sits in the back with our 5 children so he’s not alone… he never used to do this he’s 7 months of now and recently started doing it last couple of months😭😭😭😭😡😡😡😡
Our 5 month PWD boy barks and whimpers when one of us leaves the car. It only lasts a few seconds but we worry that it is separation anxiety. We have tried throwing cookies to the back seat bit she ignores them. Any suggestions?
Hi Rose! We have a wonderful episode with a full protocol to fix and prevent separation anxiety, we're sure you can adapt it to the car situation: th-cam.com/video/nr-qRKBCPUE/w-d-xo.html Happy training!
You need to do a podcast on how to keep me from being triggered by my Aussie's whining and yowling whenever the vehicle MOVES. I'd try the remote feeder but I don't think it would give me my favorite treats when I succeed at maintaining my sanity.
Lol my favorite comment 😂. Still don’t know what to do with my border collie who can ride in the car with anyone but me (cuz I’m that much fun hahaha) but I’m requesting a shot of margarita as my reinforcement for sanity!
I taught my reactive dog to down. When he sees a trigger, I tell him to down. When he can’t see the trigger he stops barking. His reward is being able to look at or watch the trigger when he is quiet. Worked like a charm.
Help please! My dog is fantastic in the car with no noise.....until the car stops...then she goes crazy with barking!! She seems to be trigger stacked by the seatbelt coming off, car put into park, keys out and door opening, I have tried repetetive seatbelt on and off etc and not opening the back door until she stops barking but that doesn't seem to work, she is three and is crated in the car and otherwise the most amazing dog.
I have tried EVERYTHING to stop my dog from whining in the car. I've accepted it since Lefty doesn't bark. I've opened the window and it stops for a minute.
HI Susan i would like you to go.a.little more in depth about how to go about training them to be in a car with a crate because restraining or even blocking the front still causes her to whine . My dog is triggered by other cars and will bark at almost every single car and iys guaranteed she will.bark at somehting big and motorcycles and when noone is coming or were on a one.way street, she whines when there is no car to bark at. She watches for the cars out the passenger window and then jumps to driver side to bark at them. And when I close the windows to try to keep her from doing that she watches out the front and still jumps to the closed window and barks . Ive tried restaining her in a seat belt and all shes does is whine. ive tried blocking the front from her, still whines. I just want her to be able to chill and ride lol, she gets herself so worked up.
My dog doesn't bark, but whines the whole drive. He doesn't even touch his favorite bones and toys. He does eat training treats and he does lay down and follows commands. But the whining keeps coming. We tried everything except for the slow approach (waiting to turn the car on or leave the driveway until he stops whining). I hope it will work. I feel really bad for the little guy because I don't know how to help him.
