  • The UN general assembly voted overwhelming in favour of a resolution forwarded by Egypt and Mauritania demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza; 153 countries voted in favour, 10 voted against including the US and Austria, and 23 abstained.

    Can someone please explain why UN sees the need to vote on something so universal as *Protection of citizens and upholding legal and humanitarian obligation* ... Should this not be the non-negotiable rule of the UN...

      The statement Australia, Canada and New Zealand made is this, that's what they were voting for. It should've been much clearer: "Hamas must release all hostages, stop using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and lay down its arms. There is no role for Hamas in the future governance of Gaza”

      Great question! It’s politics. This is where stuff gets dirty and complex, so a country will vote no for certain interests. Voting yes on this matter may mean that Israel must stop fighting in their war against Hamas. However, Israel does want to fight to remove the terrorists and USA wants to make money by funding Israel with weapons.

    Like many resolutions before, Israel will just ignore this one.
    The US veto the other day is also the latest in a long line of US vetoes. MOST of which, throughout the years have been in support of Israel.

      A vote for a ceasefire would be a matter for the Security Council, which it was the other day, and was vetoed by the US.
      This vote by the General Assembly is basically a protest against that veto. No country has a veto in GA voting.

    People giving excuses like 'oh khamas 🥴' should know that Israeli occupation started in 1948 while hamas existed in 1988 after intifida. According to international law, people under occupation has a right to armed resistance. You can't condemn resistance fighters before you condemn the occupation.

      In 2005, Israel dismantled every single settlement, left behind thriving businesses, and completely withdrew from Gaza. Gaza held elections and their elected government has been responsible for basic services and even maintained a war making capability. What more should Israel do to not be an "occupier" anymore?

    The UN prefer to maintain the Palestinians' refugees status because they get tons of money and power in behalf of the "Palestinian cause".
    The UN have 2 refugees agencies - UNHCR for around 100mil refugees around the world, and UNRWA only for the Palestinians.

      The logic is “Keep killing people so this other group stops killing”? Here’s a fact none of you want to acknowledge: Hamas’ leaders are in Qatar. Most of its power rests in Turkey and Qatar, nations allied with the US which abides by Israel’s every demand. Israel never made a request that the Hamas leaders in these countries be persecuted, rather they bomb Gaza.

    just read today that US would veto the today today because they have worked hard at trying to get a temporary ceasefire and hostage exchange that is still not in place and this ceasefire would potentially create long term peace. Also Britain could create Israel but cannot create Palestine. I don't get the logic
