  • When I think of PlayStation, I think of God of War. The series is as influential as it get's in the gaming industry and Kratos is just as iconic. I am incredibly nostalgic towards the God of War series and I think that was abundantly apparent in my retrospective on the original God of War. The emotions are a little different going into God of War 2 though as... well, my memory fails me on this one. I don't remember much at all and considering God of War 2 is many's favourite game in the series, yeah that's very strange to me. But that gets me excited. Like I'm visiting the game for the first time. So the question is, after 14 years how does God of War 2 hold up today and is it worth your time revisiting or playing for the first time? Let's find out!

The kraken in this game was most definitely meant to reference the kraken from the 1981 Clash of the titans movie. iirc Harry Hamlin who played Perseus in that movie was brought in to do the voice work for Perseus in the game which is a pretty damn cool cameo for GoW's twisted version of Greek mythology.

And this is because its balance is simply perfect: puzzles, fights, plot, extras... Perfect, no other word would fit. I have replayed GoW II just recently along with other Ps2 eras masterpieces. First off, I played GOW II after replaying DMC 3 and boy I celebrate after acquiring the golden fleece and Kratos suddenly became stylish in my run. But being older and to have played the Newer GOW, my take is how Kratos is a tragic anti-hero. Kratos in the OG trilogy is always angry. And it came from his spartan training. But then there's also the gods' labours. GOW II is after COO which means he already killed persephone who wanted to kill all of existence where Kratos was being toyed with the memories of his daughter. Then comes GOW II and Kratos is being betrayed by the gods, especially Zeus. Kratos mentally is always angry but its a facade on how he is actually on the verge of mental anguish. The thing is in GOW II, we meet greek heroes. And these heroes are way more unhinged than the last one you will meet. And they are as desperate as Kratos in meeting the sisters of fate. The first hero is Theseus. He was simply a loyal servant and wants to challenge Kratos, still he underestimated him. Then comes Perseus who is already crazy and delusional. Icarus, while not entirely a hero is another crazy person coming after the sisters' audience. Then lastly the spartan soldier. The last soldier is actually a decent person but he is more of a symbol of Zeus' final act of betrayal. There's also Jason and he was really helpful in handing Kratos the fleece. But the Kraken scene where Kratos flashbacks to his wife showed Kratos actual mental state. That much like the other heroes, he's becoming worse emotionally and mentally. Him killing the unnamed soldier who was loyal to him blows heavily on his heart and he admits defeat. He's the last one to be the closest to the sisters' audience but he is on the verge of defeat. It would then be his anger that will drive him to move forward. Kratos is not a complex character but he is in no way single dimensional. His anger is his surface emotion because he can't just trust anybody and his ptsd is that he can't even trust himself. Those whom he trust and respects always end up dead and at worst by his hands, unwillingly.

Great video. Only thing I would disagree on is how you said the combat in the first game you had an over reliance on Poseidons rage. Which is not true. Army of Hades and medusas head were great abilities to mix in your combat. Especially after you level them up. They were very satisfying to use. Other than that I pretty much agree with everything else. Awesome video.

Not saying the other abilities weren't useful, but as I explained in my video on the og God of War you unlock Army of Hades too late in the game and with such a limited magic pool, Poseidon's rage is far too useful for too long. This game, even a bit more than 2018, feels like you're on a classic quest. Going to far off and forgotten places far far from home.
I know the game can be smashed out in about 6 hours but it's so brilliantly paced, the bosses are varied and fun and the set design is outstanding. The gameplay is also much better than God of war 2005

God of War 2 hands down is the best one in the entries series. I have played all the games in the original series and GOW2 is by the best in my opinion. Everything from the story, to the levels of the games, to the weapons, and finally the boss’s fights was calibrated perfectly. With GO3, I feel they rushed a bit which was quite evident in the bosses fights and also the few sets of levels we go through during the games.

They give all the combos but haven't optimized the enemies and the combat system never allows you to use them. Mostly it comes down to square square triangle. Especially on the harder difficulty

  • @Gravinus

Kratos not using time travel to solve his biggest issue (him killing his family) isnt a nitpick, that is a massive plot hole and damages his character. An explanation of him being blinded by rage isnt given by the game itself and would be a weak ass reason at that.
All that being said, I still love this game. The various environments and bosses you fight really take it up a notch from the 1st game.

in the last days of the PS2, a couple of games were spectacular at pushing the hardware to the limits.
    God of War 2
    Shadow of the Colossus
    Okami
Any of these games despite being an excellent game in their own right, were just awe inspiring. Shadow of the Colossus was incredible at the time. Graphically it may even hold an edge against God of War 2. It was a pity they moved God of War 3 to the PS3 as I think the PS2 deserved to have the full triology.

I think what makes Gow 2 stand out less is the lack of narrative importance. Gow 1 had the advantage of being first and being able to use Kratos' own backstory as an ancor, with Ares being the ultimate bad guy for Kratos personally.
Gow3 had the advantage of being the long awaited climax. Slaying many of the known gods, Kratos becoming the destroyer of Olympus, etc.
Gow2 on the other hand was more of a transiction from a narrative standpoint. There weren't many story beats here to make it memorable, with the exception of maybe the very beginning and end.
That doesn't mean that the game had a bad story, but it was ultimately all build up and set up, for things that wont find a conclusion until gow3.
From a pure gameplay perspective, i'd argue that gow2 is equal to gow3, if not better. Combat is tight and definitly a step up from gow1. Bosses are numerous and fun, again a step up from gow1.
The platforming and puzzles mixed into or between fights led to a fantastic pacing, and were filled with creative and fun gimmicks like the time manipulation.
There really isn't anything to complain about in that regard. It's also the only game in the original trilogy with ng+, which is also a lot of fun thanks to having the Blade of Olympus as a permanent weapon.

I do love this game but for me 1 and 3 are better. God of War 2 feels incredibly short by comparison to the others and I find a lot of the locations fairly forgettable. The enemy variety feels a little basic, with them adding little to nothing new to slay from GOW 1 outside the bosses. The bosses are great though, best selection in the series with the only one I disliked being the Mole Cerberus. The fight with the two sisters (Lakhesis and Atropos) is easily my favourite boss of the entire series.

It is a nice small detail if u think. The moment Kratos travels back in time, the Great War is in its final stages. Hades and Poseidon have beaten Atlas, Cronos was very weak after Hades tried to steal his soul, maybe beat him later as Zeus created the blade. And of course, at that time, Zeus is about to unleash the Blade of Olympus against the Titans. So yeah, Kratos brings only the surviving Titans by the end of the Great War.

God of war 2 > God of war 3. It’s just my opinion. My problem with GOW3 is it’s too short, the bosses were great but putting poseidon as the 1st boss? Hades being the 2nd? Does not make any sense at all. Poseidon and Hades are the brothers of Zeus which is most likely to be as powerful or close to zeus in terms of power level. Another issue is GOW3 has the worst Rage mode ever. In GOW2 you can use The blade of olympus as a weapon but in 3 ahh it was bad. GOW2 was perfect, the Journey, weapons, storyline, combat and puzzles, everything you want in a GOW game, GOW2 was an absolute beauty back then. One of the best PS2 games ever.

    • @mrpachaaa

Same. To me, everything in GoW 3 was a stepdown. Especially:
      - Story (power of hope in god of war, LMAO!)
      - Music (was subpar compared to gow2)
      - Combat (no real magic or rage power)
      - Atmosphere (You're mostly fighting in open spaces in GoW3. Fighting in dungeons or closed spaces - Pandora's Temple being prime example - induces a lot of stress... or rather, the feeling of danger. This is sorely missed in GoW 3.
