It’s more a train that rides onto an elevator. Originally the horizontal section was a foot tunnel while the vertical section was just two normal elevators. The system closed in 1995 when the elevators had reached the end of their life after an upgrade in the 60s. With the current system which dates from 2004, the passenger cabin can only travel horizontally by itself on 850 mm gauge tracks. For vertical section, it detaches from the cable and connects to a larger elevator with no cab

There would be another horizontal / more or less vertical lift connecting Via Cantore with the Villa Scassi hospital, but it has been stopped since 04/12/2022 due to problems that the construction company has not been able to resolve
