- (10-21-2019) This was the experience of a lifetime! Thanks to VDOT, we got a behind the scenes tour at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Our tour guide showed us this amazing facility, the elevator, and the machine room! Enjoy as we get a ride on the elevator where you will see stuff the general public never gets to see.

So glad we could make this video happen! Thank you so much for joining us, Andy.
This was amazing
Incredible!! What a very cool system.
It was! Thanks for watching!!
@@DieselDucy You are very welcome!!
By far this is definitely one of the most unique elevator experiences you could ever ask for! I never thought there would be a freight elevator built into a tunnel that was designed for vehicles to travel on.
It is quite amazing to find elevators in the most unusual places this was definitely very cool experience!
Thanks for the tour Andrew!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching!
@@DieselDucy ❤️
Driving through tunnels like this I always think about the infrastructure behind them. Really awesome to see some of that!
This was amazing. Wish I could have shown more. Still it was an amazing experience.
@@DieselDucy have you being to Orlando Yet
This is such a cool elevator and facility! I like how VDOT is above the tunnel, with a beautiful view of the ocean. The elevator opening to the long tunnel is really cool!
It was an amazing experience. Wait til you see the bridge tour coming soon!
Awesome!
Thanks
I’ve been through this tunnel, it’s fun, and I’m glad you got to wear your proper PPE equipment.
Yep! We had to wear it. It was so much fun!
9:29 oh cool this one has that mini symulator thing for part of the selector
I love it
What an incredible experience to see this... Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thank you for watching it ❤️
looks like a really interesting elevator
I know what I'm gonna watch in ~6 hours
Hope you enjoyed it

I enjoyed this video! Very cool machines and Elevators. That tunnel was Amazing too!
Thanks so much for watching
@@DieselDucy this elevator is traction
“They have a freight elevator, that’s weird” - Andrew Reams (at least 11 years ago)
Who knew that 10 years after that one video you’d get to see an elevator that belonged to VDOT!
If you’re ever in Duluth Minnesota then you should see if Evan or Aaron can arrange an ElevaTOUR of the Aerial Lift Bridge.
I live here. Years ago I had connections and got to go up there. I don't know anyone anymore though...
I would love to.
Congratulations on 90K!!!
Thanks so much 😃
This is extremely epic!!

@@DieselDucy Why U said Otis instead of OTIS??????
Amazing! Thank You!
Thank you too!
I've never heard of a Old Dominion Elevator!! This looks pretty cool seeing the cars go by
It was a local company
This was great. Please do more facility tours.
Have some more in store 😊
This was very interesting. I liked those relay controls. They looked so cool.
I love relay logic
Cool! I enjoyed it! Happy Halloween! 🎃
You too. Thanks
That is a very nice elevator!
I love it
That is very cool!
Thanks so much for watching!!
My favorite
Thanks Jackson
Amazing tour of this tunnel and its behind the scenes operations, but why didn't you go to SGR? Was SGR locked?
We never went there. Maybe there was nothing of interest there? Our tour guide was amazing though.
Might have been electrical for the lighting -- just my guess
Very cool ! That freight elevator is very narrow. It must be scary being close to the cars in the tunnels. Thanks for sharing !
It was amazing. Thanks for watching.
This was epic
Thanks so much!
Wow this is a very unique elevator
I loved it!
This is an awesome video!
Thanks so much!
@@DieselDucy You're welcome!
I’ve always wanted to see one of these things!
It was an AMAZING experience!
Very nice!
Thanks so much!
This is so cool. I never thought there would be an elevator in a tunnel
they can use for evacuation.
It is used for maintainence.
@@DieselDucy cool
I was in Erie seeing my pap but I will watch this! 😊 Wasn’t able to tune in for premiere sorry.
You will enjoy this
Used to live in Norfolk. Really cool bridges and tunnels. Don’t miss the traffic though, lol. One time it took us almost 2 hours to get over the HRBT (3.5 miles)! Wish I could have gotten a behind the scenes tour, as I think elevators are really cool, and I love infrastructure!
The traffic is definitely interesting lol. But yeah this was an amazing experience!.
Awesome
Thanks so much!
Very epic
I loved it!
Woah, this is cool! The elevator is NEAT, the bell chime reminds me of the annoying freight elevator
I like the gal bell
@@DieselDucy me too! 😁
What a lucky find. Lots of cool specs and features on this one. By the 1990's, GAL must have been the last one still building old style open frame controllers.
Good to see you doug! I’m surprised it is still relay logic being how new it is.
@@DieselDucy Some consultants continued to specify relay for utilitarian applications like this. My understanding is that the actual end of them was the adoption of the 2000 code. I'm amazed that GAL was still winning bids with their open "slateboard" design. Seems like a lot of material compared to a relatively small cabinet full of ice cubes which was what everyone else would have built at the time.
happy halloween dieselducy
Thanks so much 🎃
@@DieselDucy No problem! i hope you have a great halloween :D
Wow. This is very neat. I don’t know if Baltimore has that. But this is very amazing. Congrats on 90k subs. I hope to meet you at some point whenever you’re back in the DMV area with Elyse
Thanks! Maybe we can!
@@DieselDucy :)
@@DieselDucy Same
Soooooo cool
Thanks alot!
This is such an interesting facility. Did you end up riding the 1 at the other end or did you not get the clearances to do that 1? I'm sure it's identical anyhow.
I only got to see this one. They were very generous to show me what they did. It was amazing
Look Cool
It was awesome!
I've been across this, the HRBT and CBBT
Awesome
It’s gonna be a good tunnel
yep!
@@DieselDucy That’s a cool video
In denmark we have a hospital called rigshospitalet also known as riget / the kingdom the elevator Doors malfunction often and the Doors sometimes wople as it moves
Sounds like it needs some help!
VDOT is cool. They love making jokes on their Twitter lol
I love VDOT.
I like seeing GAL Jetplus, but they should've went with Monitor since its called the "Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge". Jk :P
I know right lol.
Hudson Ave Merrimac St
Wow
I had fun!
Wow you ride llooonnnngggg
I did
is there an elevator at the other end as well?
There is
HOLY I NEVER SEEN A FREIGHT ELEVATOR IN A CAR TUNNEL
It was awesome
I love the retro 1970s elevator control panel. This was installed in 1991???
the controller looks older too but relays last the newer stuff is junk
1992
Whats On SGR?
How Did They Build It.
I’m not sure but they had to put it under the water.
When it comes to the machine room it ain't a trick but a treat if anyone had subscribed to #mrmattandmrchay as well as this, as that vertical carriage selector is something but similary talked about on that channel!
I love his stuff!
Good vir
Thanks!
No problem
Is that thing hydraulic or traction
Overhead drive traction.
This is the first time there is an elevator in the tunnel.
First one on TH-cam :)
00:19-00:27 The same year internet connections were made for the future!
I find that kind of goofy how they have this elevator right in the middle of a highway tunnel maybe its used for carrying their maintnance equipment down to keep the tunnels clean
That is correct.
There Was 2 Elevators There.
Yes but we only got to see one
Is it a dover
It was an old dominion
What music do you use
Epidemic sound
Did y'all see the second elevator?
We did not
Ah ok
Looks like lytle tunnel in Downtown Cincinnati Ohio into Kentucky.
This one goes under water though.
@@DieselDucy I drove under lyle tunnel in Cincinnati every time going through Kentucky to Tennessee.
EPIC
Thanks :)
Probably one of the weirdest freight elevators that I even seen, because it is too narrow, the inner doors are solid, and due that in fact that it directly serves an Interstate Highway.
this was an amazing experience.
@@DieselDucy Definitively.
Nice elevator but pretty small. It's rare for me to see an elevator in a tunnel
Yeah it is not a very common thing :) Thanks for watching!!
What That Song Called.
Which one?
@@DieselDucy The One After Your Videos When It Says The Video Over.
What do you mean you had to put it under water and how come you only went to see one elevator.
@@jacobisworld9516 I saw what my tourguide showed me.
