  • On this episode of 83 Weeks, Eric and Conrad discuss and explore the turbulent year of 1999 in Sting's career. Sting starts the year and ends as champion, but the wild storyline ride in between is something Eric cringes to talk about.

    The Sting / DDP match for the belt in April 1999 is arguably, to me, one of the best nitro matches that ever happened. The match was insane start to finish and the crowd was bonkers. A true athletic contest. Sting looked badass with the paint missing at the end and the diamond cutter reversal into the death drop was used in both their matches (98 and 99) and the crowd popped big time in this match. 5 star match in MY book, story or not.

    • @dreamatchwrestling
      @dreamatchwrestling ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the best nitro match ever and one of the best matches in the history of WCW in my opinion.

    • @JMB1017
      @JMB1017 ปีที่แล้ว

      That match fucking slapped. Such an athletic, fast paced bout and a genuine unexpected outcome that popped the fans.
      Unfortunately I think that was the start of when WCW had titles changing hands like a game of hot potato.

      @BlanketsWereStairs did you know he had a non televised match in Baltimore a few weeks earlier? It ended up being in a magazine later on that year. Sting beat DDP that night with the scorpion death lock.

    Call me biased, but I completely disagree with the Sting promo and the ridiculous amount of criticism on Dave Meltzers saying it ran too long. I hadn't seen him in 6 months at that point, so I was absolutely interested in hearing what he had to say.

  • @ncvogt
    @ncvogt ปีที่แล้ว +21

    I've seen that Sting return promo on Nitro more times than I can recall. Meltzer's take on that is way out there! The crowd reacted very favorably to it. It was the perfect fired up Babyface promo and the crowd popped throughout. Meltzer doing his typical over critical routine.

      He hates Sting so it’s no surprise. Of course, Connie reads it like gospel without watching it himself.

      I was in the crowd that night, me and my buddies. It was my one and only WCW show I ever attended and it was a good one. I got to see Sting vs Ric Flair and DDP and Scott Steiner end (for the time) their awesome feud and other cool stuff. And yeah Meltzer is full of shit. The crowd reacted VERY well to Sting that night and his opening promo likewise. I never knew it was percieved badly until now actually. Sure I prefered teh first version of Crow Sting, the silent brooding version but by this point they (for some resaon) weren't doing the nWo storyline anymore, or they KINDA were but it was obviously fizzling and Sting obviously wanted to talk again. This 1999 version of Crow Sting was different. The first version was Goth this was Metal and I think it worked perfectly for the time. Much as I love the Crow Theme he had in 97 and 98 it was wise to change THAT as well by 99 to the Metallica song. This was Crow 2.0 and it fit pretty well for the time even if the booking and story telling around the character was horseshit. But yeah long story LONG, Sting was over as fuck that night and wasn't getting booed at all during his promo.

      Agreed the fans ate it up. No idea what the hell Conrad is talking about. Drinking the uncle Dave Kool aid

    • @ncvogt
      @ncvogt ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh my Lord. So I just rewatched that promo on Peacock to see if my memory was off. Meltzer is taking crazy pills! The fans ate that promo up. The only time they booed was when Sting mentioned DDP, who was in the beginning stages of his heel turn.
      Conrad, if you're going to make this promo a topic of discussion and a critique of the Sting character, at least watch the promo and don't just regurgitate Meltzer weird, awful write ups.

      @ncvogt truly embarssing and lazy to even say such things that are just flat wrong. Definitly should do more then little to Meltzer make shit up. Any real fan of WCW remembers this promo and how hot the crowd was.

    I was at the Nitro in New Orleans when he said the suck it thing. A) He thought as did I, that the cameras were off already at the end of the show. B) He actually only said "I got two words for ya" and he let the crowd finish it.

    Just finished reading the Nitro book. It makes so much sense as to why Eric might have mentally checked out by 1999. The corporate landscape changed drastically and the family friendly demands placed upon Eric was the real point at which the edgy creative stuff stopped. And that's when WCW stopped being able to compete.
    And, the frankly bizarre goings on around the sale of WCW, I felt empathy for Eric. He did everything he could to save the company. If you haven't read Nitro, it's a must read. It explains so much, and backs up much of what Eric describes.

    1:44:40 talking about Seek and Destroy from Metallica. The Dave you're thinking of is in fact Dave Mustaine and he was in Metallica when that album was created but he didn't have credits to that song Dave Mustaine is a part of Megadeth at the time WCW uses this song

    Meltzer's stars do not matter in anyway...it is about the story and star power, always has been. If you are Shawn Michaels and are an amazing storyteller + amazing wrestler...you are elite. Which is why AEW will flop like every other independent/outlaw wrestling "organization". Have fun at Wembley, do it next year and prove me wrong...Number of flips do not matter.

    • @PIP-zf9yb
      @PIP-zf9yb ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you on Meltzer. Aew isn't flopping they having there best year by far this year. They are going nowhere bud. Like or hate them, they are here to stay.

    • @BrandanTheBroker
      @BrandanTheBroker ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not touching the AEW stuff because I'm not really into modern wrestling, but I'd say it's more story than star power. A great story can catapult 2 midcarders, a shit story can handcuff 2 stars. Also, FDM!

    Sting never said suck it. That’s the one thing about sting. He is probably the only wrestler I can think of that has never cursed in air. Or even ever. Even in a shoot interview sensational Sherri said she never heard him even use a curse word. Truly amazing.

    Conrad only watched southern wrestling, so his opinion on wrestling barely matters...Terry Taylor would never be world champion in anyone's organization. Arn Anderson was a big deal somewhere in the south, but would never work anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.

  • @justintackett3640
    @justintackett3640 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sid (not prime), Steiner (def not prime), Sting (not prime), Goldberg (green as green can be...with his name piped in through the speakers), Nash (didn't care anymore), and Hogan (at that point, on top of the world). These aren't convincing points Dave, I mean Conrad.
