In 2011, people really don't really realise how great Eli was. In 2011 he passed for 4,933 yards, led the league with 4Q comebacks, and game-winning drives, with one of the worst defences that year, 25th in points allowed and 27th in yards allowed. He had a record-breaking year, and with all those problems, he somehow led his team to the Lombardi trophy!

His career outside of his championships is probably going to look underwhelming compared to some Hall of Fame quarterbacks but he has a good career, and an excellent 2011.

The 86 Giants at 21? You could make an argument, & don't start Bears fans, that their postseason defensive stats were more impressive than the Bears of the previous season. They outscored San Francisco & Washington by a score of 66-3. I repeat 66-3. They shut down and blew out the 49ers and shut out The Redskins. Then then held John Elway to 20 points. I would say that is more impressive than beating Dieter Brock & Tony Eason.

Sometimes, the best & most memorable Super Bowl-winning seasons are from the teams that had to grind their way through all season to get to the mountain top( or even get BACK there as well ). And the 2023 Chiefs just completed one of their very own. 🙂

As a Giants fan I have to agree with our 2011 team being the worst Super Bowl champions, our defense was terrible (although they did admittedly play much better in the postseason) and we had the worst rushing attack in the NFL. Eli and our receivers did a good deal of the heavy lifting that season and the team got hot at the right time, although we were certainly lucky we avoided having to go to the Super Dome and play the Saints (a team who’d demolished us in the regular season) in the NFCCG.
The 2007 team being ranked second to last is a bit more contentious though. Yes, they were only 10-6, Eli’s quarterbacking was pretty hot and cold until the playoffs, and we frankly got a number of lucky bounces, but the team was also just very well-rounded. We had a great offensive line plus both a 1,000 yard receiver and running back, with a top five rushing attack to boot. The defense was ranked middle of the pack in terms of points per game and per drive, but we also had a terrific front seven which led the league in sacks including two double digit sackers (Tuck and Osi) plus the veteran Strahan. Plus, maybe some homerism but I just feel knocking off the only undefeated team in the 16 game era is a pretty big added boost.
I personally would’ve put them over the 2012 Ravens, 1980 Raiders, 1970 Colts, 2015 Broncos, and 2001 Patriots, but again likely some homerism there.

Nice to see some love for the '72 Dolphins. But the '73 Dolphins were a lot more dominant in the playoffs, and should probably be much higher on your list. As a cowboys from the late 80’s on, the 91 Redskins and the 92 Cowboys should’ve been ranked a LOT higher. That Skins offense threw down some serious points and NOBODY wanted to play them at RFK. The 92 Cowboys are still the team with THE greatest depth of players, especially on D, in history, as well as the greatest offensive line ever. Oh, and Eli Manning, love him or hate him, and I hate the fucking Giants- was CLUTCH. Yea, he barely helped smuggle the giants into the 2007 postseason at 9-7, but he WON when it truly mattered and thanks to him (and Tyree)- prevented everyone from having to hear about “the perfect season” from every Pats fan. The 1992 Cowboys are much better than the 1999 Rams. The Cowboys were a much more physical team, particularly with their O Line. Their defensive line was so deep he backups could have started for 20 of the other teams. They played much better competition in the playoffs than the Rams and dominated them. (actually they won every postseason game by double digits in 92/93/95). The 92 Cowboys is one of of the youngest Super Bowl teams ever.

  • @irar4665

    Great stuff- and well done.
Points where I disagree are cases where teams had great defenses as their better part of their team: Rated too low are the 2003 Patriots, the 86 Giants, 1993 Cowboys - who btw were better than the 1992 Cowboys the year before, and 84 Niners have to be higher
*Rated too high are the 96 Packers, both of Elways Broncos teams 97 and 98, the Steelers of 1975 wasnt one of the Steelers best- and their 2005 certainly not.
Looks to me that its being ranked based on how they did VS THEIR OPPONENTS IN THAT PLAYOFFS (and season)rather than overall quality of the team.
