Hi there, Liron again here, coming at you with another episode of Painting Masters!
This time I'm featuring Thierry Duval, a french watercolor painter who creates REALISTIC paintings.
In fact, his work is in most cases photo-realistic.
I found out about him through Instagram, and it fascinated me seeing how he slowly builds his paintings up.
He works very carefully, and often masks areas of the drawing to protect them and save them as a highlight for later.
You can check his work out here:

I hope you enjoy this video, and we'll talk again really soon.

I could watch Thierry Duval paint for hours, & I have. He is by far my favorite artist out there. Simply magnificent!!! If you haven’t watched him paint, mask, and paint again... you really should.
Thanks for this series on masters. It has given me many many happy hours of watching masters. I discovered Thierry Duval only recently on instagram and spent nearly a whole night there captivated by his technique . He actually points out that he never uses opaque white. But he uses tones of masking fluid that he applies with the use of a ruler pen for lines and or a real vintage pen ( the ink kind) for dots and other details. So photographic a style is not really my thing but this artist is really on a league of his own. This explains the fact that he has more than 600.000 followers . Thanks for including him in the series
NO PROBLEM with longer video. I like the way you described the various elements. Don’t need a lot more info on the elements ! Just right. Don’t need to go any further ...loved this video!
Getting that level of realism with watercolour, wow.
Yes - so much skill! (:
I've been watching him on instagram for a while. He has an unbelievable talent. He was seriously I'll earlier in the year. I'm so glad he's better and out of hospital and painting again.
This level of realism with watercolor is nuts.
I find Thierry POSITIVELY phenomenal! Thanks for sharing this video on his journey. I, too, follow him on IG and he just takes my breath away!
Yes, he is! (:
And he's also such a nice person!
He started a youtube channel!
Congratulations Thierry. Tu es le Maître de l’aquarelle et de Paris.
Ce video et les autres.... une idée géniale.
He is indeed incredible (:
I absolute love show and tell video's - I could watch them all day !
Phenomenal!!
Thank you! 😁🙏🏼
Thanks for the wonderful video ! Love to learn about painting realism!
very beautiful and inspiring
I may be wrong, but the first painting you discuss is of a part of Piccadilly Art Market in Green Park, London. Really interesting video too 🙂🇬🇧
I really enjoy your longer videos, especially the full length painting tutorials.
In this video I was especially impressed with the shadows from the trees in the very first painting you showed. Amazing! I can't even imagine how patient this artist must be!
Thanks Liron!
Oh yes, that one is really impressive (:
Thank you so much!
I have a few upcoming long painting processes that are fully narrated.
Hope you'll enjoy them as well ^_^
Excellent video! This artist is very good! I like his work a lot!
He is incredible! (:
Thank you 😊🙏🏼
great work. Loved the one with the yellow sky with sort of Burt sienna
Yes - it is SO beautiful (:
And I'm sure that one in particular has some of his interpretation in it. The light is very accentuated.
Time flew by - so much to study and your explanations were very helpful.
So happy to hear (:
Thank you! ^_^
I love this video I love the artist and please give us more video
Thank you 😊🙏🏼 Will do many more!
I loved this video! Personally, I like longer videos so, yes, I'd like them to be longer! When a person is very interested in the video, 2 hours can feel like 10 minutes! Can't wait to see more of yours!
You know, I think the feel of realism is due to what might be called a calculated infusion of mystical light, capturing the feel of light when you are in a state of spiritual quiet and calmness, where your own body seems penetrated by light and the sub atomic particles are vibrating. Honestly…a sense of the immateriality of matter, hence, a sense of timelessness and immortality.
Hope all is going well with you Liron!
I love love love this video. New to you but found it looking for clips on Thierry Duval. I can watch, listen or ready ANYTHING on the way he paints. Looking forward to finding out more about you.
😊🙏🏼 So happy you enjoyed and welcome aboard!
Excelente, muy buenos comentarios. La extensión del video me parece genial, sin drama de mi parte. Saludos!!
Cool. I pray I'll be a master at something too.
Photorealistic is the best style.
yes nerd out more!! loved this video. i found him on instagram and well and was very impressed. he seems very kind too
Haha, thank you ^_^
Yes - he is super kind! He replied to my messages (I sent him the vid) and was so grateful about it. Once of the coolest people I got to interact with on Instagram.
Length is fine. Duval's techniques amazing.
Thank you (:
He is indeed amazing
Thank you Liron. I had never seen his work. So very impressive overall but those skies! Its so hard for my brain to accept that those skies are watercolor.
Haha same here! I'm really awed!
And how he connects them to the rest of the painting. Real skills (:
Wow what an incredible artist, thanks for finding him for us. 😊
My pleasure (:
Happy I can help in that way! Thank you ^_^
Wow, wonderful artist! The length is fine, there’s a lot to look at. Thanks!
Thank you ^_^ So happy to hear
Great skill in those paintings - not an approach I would ever want to emulate, but you can't help but admire the technique. For most painting Y/Tube videos, I find 20-30 minutes normally works very well (with some variation to allow for the different requirements of what is being discussed/demonstrated). This video was a perfect length in my view and i enjoyed it immensely - thanks for sharing this artist with us!
Thank you so much ^_^
I'm of a similar opinion. I did a few experiments in realism, and enjoyed them as a different experience.
But I find impressionism much more enjoyable and to be my "truth" (:
Thank you for the feedback about the length too.
I discovered this artist on Instagram and am completely wowed by the realism. I had to do a second look just to be sure it wasn't a photograph!
Haha, he's incredible!
I would watch a 10 hours painting process of his, if it was available :D
very talented detailed work, I want to get to the happy balance of detail and loose expression in my work, long videos are fine for me thanks Liron
Thank you ^_^
same here - I'm also looking for a different balance.
But it's incredible to appreciate different approaches (:
Go as long as you want in the video's! I really enjoy the Masters serie!
So happy to hear ^_^
Thank you so much!
❤️ Great video!
Thank you ^_^ Happy you enjoyed!
Good video, length no problem when they are as interesting as this one!
Thank you ^_^
Will try to do more long/er ones!
The roofs are made of zinc. The parts that look like stripes are the seams between the strips of metal.
Wow, thank you for explaining this! (:
I loved that, we don't have those here, but in Paris I saw them everywhere.
I need to go see how he does his foliage so well. In the last painting, did you notice the light reflecting off of something behind the head on the man in the white shirt, lighting up his hair from behind? He does amazing detailed work. I prefer the impressionistic but sure can't help but admire this talent. I like the longer videos for the information and I like your voice.lol
Yes - I noticed that and it's incredible :D
And thank you for the feedback ^_^ Will try and post more longer vids!
AMAZING ...His realism is freakin unreal I wonder how long it takes him to complete a painting...
YESSS, incredible. From what I’ve seen it can take about week of full painting schedule. He also works smartly - using masking tape and masking fluid to isolate different areas of the painting.
I've seen Thierry on instagram say he takes as long as 2 to 3 months to finish a large painting.
Hi Liron, I just wanted to say that this is one of your best vedios! the way that you blew up the art work to show details , and had your picture on the left was great, because it made a connection with what you were saying! not just a voice in the sky somewhere! I wonder how long it took the artist to complete his painting, with so much accurate detail? also, how much he sells them for! This stuff would make the famous masters, jelious!
Wow, thank you so much ^_^
This makes me really happy to hear!
Yes - I think seeing my face while I go over these feels much more connected (:
i like a longer video too. I like to watch the steps and use of materials . the pace is often misleading in the videos that are short or speeded up . Just started watercolors and as ive previously mentioned your subject matter inspires me when im stuck on what to do. Should mention your enthusiasm and obvious love of teaching is so much fun to listen to. thanks tom u.s.a.
Thank you so much Tom (:
Will soon share more videos that show the whole painting process narrated. I hope you'll enjoy them as well!
You talk about drawing perspective often. I wish you would do an in depth lesson on drawing perspective. I’ve never had drawing classes (until yours lol) but I’m not clear on one, two and three point perspective (is that a thing?) Anyway, I think that kind of perspective explained for beginners would be helpful in understanding many of your videos. Thank you!
I actually have a video on that (it doesn't detail everything, but it does show quite a lot).
You can check it out here: th-cam.com/video/PGOZhDYkh1E/w-d-xo.html
With that being said, I hope to do a more conclusive and robust video on the topic (:
Thank you!
I found this video very interesting and it didn't seem too long to me. Sometimes I'll be watching a vid and think, okay wrap this thing up. Did not feel that. I wanted to note the litter in the painting with the pigeons. You talked about the litter in the final piece you showed, but I noticed that bottle on the right there, in the gutter, how bout dat. I feel like he has to be taking his own photos. I wonder if there was other litter and he just chose these bits. I don't think he sd to himself, lemme just paint in a plastic bottle here. I feel like the bottle was there. I feel like there may have been more pigeons. I get very fascinated with the editing process. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Yes - it is indeed fascinating!
It's super-interesting when it's impressionism. But for me with realism it's taken up a notch.
Thierry actually saw this (I sent him a message on Instagram), and he replied :D
He said he definitely rearranged some elements of this scene like the pigeons. Very impressive (:
The length was fine :)
Happy to hear, thank you 😊🙏🏼
Wow... 😯😯😯
i like your long videos, we have time to let everytjing sink in and the context to settle in, i have only recently started to paint in oil and it is true its slightly easier to paint in oil (i mean you do need a different skill altogether but) than it is to paint in water. thank you for making such videos, it's onteresting to hear your perspective on compositions and methods :)
Haha - thank you for providing answers from the other side =P
I wondered what oils would be like for someone versed in watercolor.
And it's my pleasure, thank you for the kind comment ^_^
I think around 25min is perfect
Awesome, thank you! ^_^
Its only long if you spend too much time on a painting. Imo you didnt spend enough :) These are beautiful and humbling :)
Liron
I think it would be good in such reviews to explain what the artist wants to achieve from their paintings, assuming that they explain it somewhere. For instance here, why is he making works that look like photographs? Why not just use a camera? How much has he changed from reality and why?
Also a daft question: why do you introduce yourself as "whatsup Liron"?
Thank you for the idea (:
I do think it will be wiser to do some more research, whenever possible. I'll try to improve that aspect ^_^
And about the what's up haha - I don't know why this one stuck in particular.
I may try a different one in the future =P
I went to Thierry's website and looked at his workshop. Any idea's why he has the panoramic mirror on the wall above his station? You can see it here: aquarl-duval.com/atelier/ Lighting?
Hmmm, it could be it. But also - sometimes these mirrors can be tilted, and so students that stand in front of the painting desk can see what you do in the mirror.
Like in this video with David Taylor (:

Liron, the length is fine. Narrative is important. Otherwise I wouldn't notice the details. Thanks.
Thank you ^_^
Will experiment with different lengths, perhaps around the 30 minute mark to start.
Sure, longer videos are fine if the topic warrants it. TH-cam usually puts you right back at the place where you stopped watching if you don't want to watch all at once.
Thank you (: Will do more of these.
I find that TH-cam feature to be really helpful too
Reeeeallly Donat mind lona vídeos!
You got it! More on the way ^_^
He's not the most photorealistic of all time, though. That title belongs to airbrush artist: Dru Blair
I LOVE his paintings! They are sooo amazing! You shoud take a look at Marcos Beccari, a brazilian watercolour artist. @marcosbeccari Very talented too.😉
I LOVE Marcos's work. He is brilliant!
I even got to watch a few of his processes. Very special artist - I will try to cover his work in a future episode!
Brilliant Work Review. 30 minute videos would be better.
Thank you so much (:
I'll test out some longer formats too!
Metal roof
It's [tiery] not [th]
Loving this series! Keep up the good work.
This artist is a serious master. Too much hyper real for me, but a master nonetheless. Still on realism, you should take a look at Marcos Beccari's work (@marcosbeccari on instagram)
Thank you so much ^_^
I'm actually familiar with Marcos's work as well - such an incredible painter!
I remember seeing his work for the first time. My jaw dropped.
Honestly, I have enough experience to know how impressionistic work is made. But his - I still wonder about his processes (:
I'm never comfortable seeing birds (pigeons) in paintings. As they are 'frozen' it seems to take the life out of the rest of the work.
An estate was to throw a DUVALL Tunisian River townhouse hill background. If I send you a photo can you help us find a worthy home, we no longer have a complementary corner for the majestic water colour.
Photo realism leaves me limp. Why not just take a photo then? Just my not so humble opinion.
It's not my style of choice too, but I definitely appreciate a skillful execution of a painting 😁
