My rabbit once thumped at me, so I looked him right in the eyes, and thumped my foot on the ground as hard as I could. My rabbit then got SUPER angry, and tried to tip his entire litter box over.

@@keenawireheart7238 He's probably getting ready to fight you. In a herd, rabbits thump at each other to challenge one another to a fight for dominance. When you return his thump, and he starts getting REALLY energetic, then that means he's usually sizing you up for a dominance fight.

Rabbits also thump when they are horny, excited, feeling playful, annoyed, frustrated and rarely, when they are scared. A rabbit on alert is not looking to be pet and the first thing to do is investigate the situation.
My rabbit is a massive diva on all accounts and does not thump in fear ever. However, one night she did and was on full alert, eyes big, ears pricked , tense body. I heard the sound that was triggering her and picked her up and took her to go see....it was a mouse stuck in a bucket. The sound of it trying to jump out was what triggered her. 😂

Ours only thumped 1 time initially when we said he couldn't chew on the wooden furniture. Another time when one of us stomped, he thumped 10 times as if to say "Hey, I'm the thumper here." For 6 years now, no thumping, just lots of peace and love.

As cute as thumping is my bunny literally thumps at nothing, I can be laying in bed reading a book and he will be just chilling out, nothing will change in the room and he will just start freaking out and stomping his feet super loud, this only happens during the evening and I always just ignore him or just ask him what's wrong every time he does it, I dont get up I just call out to him from where I am, and when I do check out what's going on there's literally nothing wrong, but when I start talking to him he stops, he will stomp a few more times but the more I talk the less he does it.

My old bunny stomps as a display of excitement. If i come near, he'll get really energetic, and if I give him attention, the stomping and binkying starts. I can't seem to find an example of this online or anyone saying that it has nothing to do with fear, annoyance, or being spoiled. I know for sure it's purely a habit of playful expression, but I don't know exactly how it started. It's not a bad habit as you mentioned either, because when I leave him alone, he doesn't continue to stomp for attention even if I'm in the same room and in view. He's 14 years old, so it's possible he gave up on bad habits that weren't encouraged but kept the temptation to stomp? Whatever the reason, it's adorable. (I know what his fear/pain stomping looks like and can tell the difference.)

What an incredibly verbose approach to explaining that wild rabbits thump as a warning of potential danger.

  • @DraconiusDragora
    @DraconiusDragora 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is a few reasons a rabbit/bunny thumps.
They can give a warning thump, as in "Don't come any closer" type thump.
They can thump to say they are annoyed or angry.
They know that if they thump, they can get attention (My oldie did it every night, because he wanted attention, then he was happy once he got it).
There is more, but would be quite a list, it is very important to read and understand your family member on what he or she is telling you.
    A nice video ^^

Wow, I have not yet seen any person explaining rabbit behavior that 'speaks rabbit' as well as you do, I'm impressed and endeared. And I love your old girl there, she reminds me of my old Lady Luna, sadly deceased almost a year ago. Thankfully I still have a whole warren in little groups to take care of at the petting farm downstairs and two beautiful young sisters that I'be known from birth here at home. How did you get to learn rabbit language so well? Beautiful how you got to pick those snippets of video from your no doubt huge collection to perfectly illustrate what your telling us. They're great examples really

First time my rabbit thumped scared me. I was alone at night out in the country. At the time didn't know why she was thumping but got the idea probably something outside scared her. So I was a bit scared myself - possibly a bear was prowling. Fortunately, her cage was in the house with me.

When I was in middle school my rabbit would snort and thump at me when I got home from school and she would ignore me for a while. She lived in my bedroom and only liked me. If my mom tried to come into my room she'd chase her out. Greta looked a lot like the rabbit in this video except she had longer fur. Miss her. Had her for about 10 years after adopting her from a rescue in 6th grade.

While I've dabbed in rabbit breeding... I've decided instead to adopt after deciding breeding was... somewhat overwhelming (though at least people got pet rabbits out of it lolol) so I decided to keep just one... but she was one of the woooorst temperamental rabbits I ever raised (I ironically named her "Honnie" before realizing this)...
I thought it might be because she had company and all of a sudden didn't, so I started adopting, and sure enough she mellowed out with other rabbits... though the first one I adopted is the grump of the group. I've seen her happy but she no like HOOMANs. Always thumps when I'm around. She has mellowed out more so that she's not aaaalways annoyed with me around but I'm guessing she just likes the company of other rabbits better, so she and Honnie get along quite well!

Learning the language of all types of animals is so much more important, to me, than the drivel we see in modern entertainment. When people say things like, "Rabbits are stupid", or, "I hate cats because they're jerks", or "I can't handle having a dog; they're too needy and noisy", it drives me bonkers. Learn the language first, Skeeter, and maybe you'll start to really appreciate them.

My rabbit was a little different. I also had a chihuahua and bonbon would thump when she wanted to play fetch. Yes my rabbit would play fetch and my chihuahua would play with her by nudging a golf ball towards bonbon and she would nudge it back. It would go on like that for hours.

My bonded pair used to switch who was top rabbit. The top rabbit would only thump when he sensed danger and once when he was mad at me for eating lox. The scout rabbit (the submissive rabbit would always be the first to hop up to me while the other watched and expected me to come to them with the treat) would only thump when they were excited by a treat - on the level of "I'm so excited I could pee," especially when they heard me loading up the treat ball.

So, I just got my sweet rescue gurl bun 1 1/2 ish years old per the rescue a hunny bunny who is 3 months old. He's neutered now, new to the house and a full escape artist troublemaker. She is a gentle Buddha bunny who loves to just be calm.
Today she started thumping after little boi escaped his separate area (same room) to come wake me up then say "Hi" to her while sprawling next to her enclosure trying to be a friend.
I call him Romeo my little gurl angel bun is Blueberry.
His attempts at giving her the razzle dazzle Romeo failed especially after he stole her bed with her scent loving on it like a Lil creep lol
Not too sure how to properly bond them she's not spayed, yet. He's newly neutered so, I'm guessing his hormones aren't settled fully. How long should I keep them separate especially after she is spay?
She's absolutely precious gurl and he's a troublemaker boi yet, are absolutely worth the effort no doubts. Hope pet shops stop breeding Rabbits for casual sale they are a 8 to 12 year commitment it's definitely not fair to the critter friends at all. Despite doing research I found the information scarce out there since they are exotic apparently think to fund my new friends in their forever home I might need to start them an onlyFans account. Certainly don't want to exploit them but, dang to pay for certain care might have to resort to that as they are exotic hoppers.
I so appreciate your videos!!! Your blog and insights. These babies stole my heart they fully own me now. Always had dogs know puppies to older dogs. Know cats (allergic) thought a bunny would be a great apartment friend. Have been plus, small composting apartment balcony garden bunny poop is perfect for that. Learned a lot including it's hard to find a knowledgeable vet for Rabbits! Something I was surprised about.
Again, I've so appreciated your videos you sharing your experiences thank you again!

I heard a bang noise in my closet and when I opened it, my bunny thumped and her ears were very forward and a minute later she thumped again. Its weird how I was scared by the noise and so was she, but it wasn't loud or startling, it was just a weird noise that made no sense, and my bunny isn't scared of loud noises

I had a dwarf bunny 🐰 and he was my best little buddy!
One day we were outside and he ran under the deck and I couldn’t get to him. He looked at me and thumbed three times in rapid succession with both back paws. There was a beat and he’d do it again.
I always thought this was a “hahaha, you can’t get to me Daddy!” Taunt.
