Around here, frost heave is just a fact of life during the cold weather months; we get a lot of freeze-thaw in our winter weather, and it's hard on the roads. To prevent locks freezing in the below-freezing temperatures, we treat them with graphite, which we're able to purchase in small tubes with tiny nozzles which make it possible to get the graphite (powder) into the lock. (Used to "lubricate" them with WD40, until a locksmith advised against using the stuff because, he said, it turns gummy and nasty and eventually sort of hardens and makes at least as bad a problem as the one we use it for to try and prevent.) The graphite keeps the rain and snow from staying in the lock and then freezing it into immobility. Only real advantage is, the key turns the lock even though it's perishin' cold and you needn't try to warm the lock in your bare hands. Not sowing yet, but leeks and onion seeds will get sown fairly soon. Around 10:59, was it "Cadge a lift," that you said? And asked d'we know what that means? Well, it puts me in mind of someone trying to "cadge a meal." Yes? No? Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio, U.S.A. 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
We've just been waking up over here in Minnesota, and it's just as Baltic. However, last week we were crawling out of our beds to -28/-30° C. temps, so it's practically a heat wave! Which means, of course, it's time to get our onions and leeks started! Cheers!
C'mon Tony! Minus 8 is a dream! It warmed up to minus 20 C here the other day, so I got excited and went for a hike with the dogs! Sowing seeds in the house only - obviously!
we are having a little chinook n the 🇨🇦 prairies! warm air with the wind from the south has raised temps from -25C to 0 and +2C here for a few days! It started yesterday but bitter winter's icy breath bringing arctic air back due early next week. Enjoy your fire Tony!
Hi Tony, we have had snow, -4 overnight and very slippy pathways too 🥶❄️ loveky wood fir your fire too. Lovely video update. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
Well here in Cumbria all my sacks of compost are frozen solid so I have no way I can make a start on any sowing ,I think going to be a few weeks behind , I was hoping to get chillies , onions and leeks going this week but the weather has other ideas 😑😅
Buy yourself a 100%wool jersey, there is a reason wool is so good for keeping you warm, mens work jerseys are bulkier than womans, i add a woolen vest over my cardigans, leaves the arms not as bulky. Plus wool doesn't make noise.
You would not like it in Ireland so Tony. I have not been out anywhere since last Friday. We have about 8 to 10 inches of snow so can't move. Just staying in and warm with the stove blazing.
Columbo must be shiting himself with your detective skills. Local shop sharpens and replace chainsaw blade for £15. Have a look about, saves a lot of hassle.
Tony, can't you fasten your microphone to your scarf, and when you put your gloves on, blow into them first, it keeps your hands warm, save putting cold gloves on. Take care.❤
