- In this edition of Instant Analysis, USCFootball.com reporters Jack Smith and Shotgun Spratling recap USC's 24-17 loss to Minnesota in Minneapolis. Once again, the Trojans allowed a 4th and goal conversion for a late touchdown and couldn't drive the field to win in the end. USC now stands at 3-2 after the loss and will welcome Penn State to the Coliseum next week.
Getting really tired of hearing it came down to one play. It wasn’t even the turnovers. It’s the O-line!!!!! It’s an absolute train wreck. Especially the pass protection. Moss is running for his life all the time, the tackles getting smoked constantly which leads to the turnovers.

Interesting fact, Riley has a total of 32 games coached at USC presently with only three more wins than Helton’s first 32 games. Add millions of dollars to Riley and USC is at a major loss thus far.
Worst OL play I’ve ever seen by a SC team. Congrats Riley. Even Clay’s OL’s weren’t this bad.

We lost due to the same issue we have seen since week 1. Slow start, offense continue to drive the ball up and down the field into the opponents territory and self destruct with penties, turnovers, and drop balls.

Branch is losing the battle with self, that's never a pretty scene. The kid has also lost serious speed, too heavy, changed 'V'-itamins? his burst seems to have moved away.

We clinched an invite to the Holiday Bowl in October.
Offensive no-show - led by Miller Moss, who wasn't aided by a drop and a miss by Branch and Hudson, respectively - coincided with Defense's first Complete lapse (it had been sliding for weeks, culminating tonight: missed tackles, even by stalwarts - arm tackles, diving at ankles, over-pursuit, etc. - conjured uncanny ghosts of 2022-23).
Defense still did plenty for us to win!
riley's side stunk it up again and again.
The OL is terrible. Our QB is been hurried continuously and he's not as mobile as Caleb Williams.
That was clearly a TD. His entire body was over the goal line.

Trojans made several mistakes, but the overturning the ruling on the field and giving Minnesota the TD, gave away the game. Fight on✌️

Game was given away long before that moment. With 7 minutes on the clock great teams hunker down and move for the kill. riley Ballerini'd his way through those 7 minutes.

No offense, painful mistakes, officials have been against us all year but shouldn’t matter. We are not prepared to win games. O line is not good enough and Lincoln needs to stop pretending they are. Protect with 6 or 7 and give our athletes a chance. Lincoln is the biggest reason we are 3-2
Swing Monheim to left, replace Noa with 76, put Raymond in 76's spot, put Gino at center. Hell, Kalolo with his catlike feet would shine at left.
Our JC transfer has shed some weight, bring him closer to the starters gate.
One play away…how about all the turnovers and all the running yards given up and get blasted off the line

This loss just like Mich is on Riley. His play calling was horrible late. The run was working and he went away from it. Why call a pass play a long pass play at that. When your oline was struggling. Also the team came out flat again. That’s on Riley
I said this while watching the LSU game that teams are going to blitz us all year because Miller, while being a pretty good passer from the pocket, doesn’t always feel the rush and isn’t athletic enough to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs. While the line will take the heat, coach Riley has to counter by using more double tight end sets on third and long and remove one of the wide receivers. It seems no one is consistently getting enough separation anyways. So it falls on the head coach to tweak his offense a bit to counter all the pressure packages Moss will be facing. I said this before the season: will coach Riley commit to playing Big 10 style football, meaning consistently running the ball 35-45 times per game or will he continue to play old PAC-12 style of spread offense. He’s changed defensively but hasn’t changed offensively. As the weather changes, there needs to be a premium on running the ball. Yesterday was a lost opportunity.

The 15 yard un-sportsman like penalty on Easton Mascarenas-Arnold on the final USC punt that moved the ball from the 10 yard line to the 25 yard line is critical and unbelievable that he lifted the player in the air and slammed him to the ground. Minnesota scored the winning touchdown with help from that penalty. Then on the first play from the 25 yard line, Minnesota moved it to the 50 yard line! Stupid stupid stupid penalty.
He should find himself on the bench for the first quarter vs Penn State, Lynn should not tolerate STUPIDITY. Don't do it coach or others will follow.
There is a professor at SC who knows a little about football... Maybe check him out!

USC isn’t as good as we initially thought. Lincoln Riley needs to upgrade the talent in the offseason. I’m tired of hearing his “one play away” excuse-his teams shouldn’t be in those situations to begin with. The team doesn’t look prepared for the physicality of B1G play, and players keep getting injured. Minnesota isn’t a hostile environment, so there’s no excuse for not coming away with a win. USC needs to add more travel time
The “adjustment they have to make” is obviously to get better on the OL.

USC's Offense averages 43 points in the Coliseum. On The Road its 22.66 points. Thats a 3 TD (20.33) Drop off when away from the Coli. 🤔 Thats definitely a Lincoln Riley problem.

It’s going to take time for USC and other former pac 12 to adapt they just need more depth and it’s a learning season they got the right coaches defensive is way better then last year. But it’s a process once we keep building they will get better

I agree with everything Shotgun said. I really like this team. I think the coaching has to be better and they need to impress upon the kids that they are better than their opponents, they need to play like they want it and take the heart out of their opponents. With losses like this, it is mental, not physical. That's why the mistakes are coming. The mental part. They need a good sports psychologist. 😲
Maybe we have to face the fact that USC is just another west coast college. No more, no less than Fresno State, Utah, San Diego state UNLV ect.
we’re just not a very good team. i thought the first halves of michigan and wisconsin might’ve been a fluke but it’s time to accept that we’re just not as elite as we thought we were after week 1. defense is much improved from last year but offense is very mediocre and just flat.

I'm starting to lean toward the "Riley is soft" camp. I hate to say it. What the hell are they doing in practice? These mistakes are what happen when you're not preparing for games but just going through the motions. You can practice plays all you want and run drills all you want but if you're not going 1s on 1s at all then you're just not preparing for a violent game. The defense got away from tackling the legs too. Too many tackles at the waist only slowing the runner down, not stopping them. Helton had a lame excuse for being soft but Riley? Inexcusable!!!!!!!

Sorry but from the TV before any of the reviews he looked in. Doesn't matter now. Should not gotten down to one play. That pic when we were driving, was awful and that to me was the biggest play, because we were about to put them away.
SC needs to get bigger, stronger, and faster. Need more speed at Linebacker, Need to get the collectives together and get a pass rusher in the off-season, Receivers need to use their body to shield the DB'S, (IE Dwayne Jarrett. ), SC is in the BIg conference. They have to play Bigger!!

18 teams that span the whole country. A big part of a team's success under this format is unfortunately gonna be in the hands of the scheduling personnel. I been following the Big Ten for years and suspected but didn't really know if your point applied to the West Coast teams. I do know that teams from the midwest have always struggled when they go the west coast. In fact, if this game was at USC, you might get a different result. I took Minnesota and the points in this one. USC is good, but not as good as advertised. The LSU win kinda has them inflated. And Minnesota is not great, but not as bad as the folks in this comment section seem to think.
