I usually don't comment but this saved me a call to an electrician! $$$. I had already switched out the circuit breaker and couldn't figure out why the power wouldn't come back on. Finally found the GFCI. I want to say Thanks!
Thank you Eric. After working 12 hours got home to find half of the house with no power. Reset everything, check all the breaker and nothing. Went to bed, working again next day and got home to solve the problem. Research the web for two hours, checking breakers, lines and lines until I found your video. Voila, it was the GFIC in the bathroom. Thank you again.
My friend I can't thank u enough I had the same issue my warranty for the new house just expired I called the electrical company they told me huge charge just for diagnostic. I did what u said it was gfi plug tripped off in basement washroom I turned it back on. Boom the effected lights are working. So my friends thanks again.
THANKS FOR THIS POSTING!! We lost power to several plugs in the kitchen. The breakers (mostly poorly labeled) checked electrically OK. Thanks to this post I went GFI hunting, and sure enough in the DINING ROOM under a curtain was a GFI plug which had tripped. Didn't even know it was there, as it had been chugging along for 20 years until sometime during the night.
OMG-- saved me! I reset my kitchen and it fixed my bathroom! I work for a company that does electrical and I know what they charge to even come out and look! My morning was ruined until I saw this-- THANK YOU!
You're a life saver for posting this my daughter pressed a button on the outlet by mistake and I didn't think anything of it and my garage door stop working you just saved a phone call to the electrician!! Thanks so much!!
Hey man, thanks a lot. My girlfriend and I just bought our first house, been in about 4 months and the shower light and closet light quit with no tripped breakers. Sure enough, there’s a GFI outlet hiding under the bathroom counter and flipping that fixed it all. Thanks again!
Thank you! My daughter’s entire room was pitch black. I asked her if she’s pressed the GFI (adjacent bathroom) and my son confirmed all breakers were fine. I went over to the GFI and it needed to be pressed harder. Everything works again and your video helped. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the moment of clarity! Half of my living room outlets and all the back deck lights were out. Watched your video and remembered the GFCI outlet on the back deck. Reset it and everything is back on. 👍
To locate a power outage in multiple rooms while the breaker is still in the on position, first plug in something you will be able to hear into one of the dead outlets. Hair dryers work well for this. Go around and jiggle some of the other wall plugs on that circuit. When you come to the receptacle with the loose stab-lock connection, you will hear your hair dryer power up. You will discover a loose wire in the stab-lock hole in that the outlet you jiggled. Reconnect the wires to a new receptacle using the SCREWS, not the stab-lock holes. It's ALSO HIGHLY unusual that your other outlets are powered from a GFI receptacle. Only certain plugs require to be GFI protected. Not entire lighting circuits. I've been a licensed electrician since 1971. Also, best to pigtail your wires together before attaching them to the plugs. That way, the plug is not being used as the splicer.
Typically, the GFI protected outlets are next to water sources, correct? Why would my basement have one in the closet close to the ground? To prevent issues if my basement floods?
James Dent Hello I have a question. I currently have no power in my garage. I think I had a short circuit because smoke was coming out of some wires leading to a power outlet in the garage but it’s not the usual plug i live in an old house and the plug that went out is a big 3 hole plug/outlet that I never use. There is black residue around that outlet, it’s obviously burnt. How can I get power back in my garage? Thanks in advance
Better yet, change all the old receptacles and switches in the house with new ones. Of course, use the screw terminals instead of back-stabs. That will solve your problem AND you'll have all new outlets, so you will prevent the same problem from re-occurring with other outlets.
Hey thanks man. You helped me out with the oddly placed GFI outlet reset. Didn’t even think to check the outside outlets, which ‘“seemed” like they’d have nothing to do with the suddenly not working lights in a completely different part of the house. That kind of hook up is either really lame, or too advanced for my currentskill level.
Just saved my butt too. My tripped outlet was covered behind my Bluetooth speaker and had forgotten all about it. Too bad I spent 2 hours troubleshooting and had purchased a multimeter and new breakers. Lol. I’ll return the breakers. Thanks!!
I know the last comment was about a year ago, but Awesome my guy, thanks! I've been searching all day trying to figure out wtf is going on in my house. First video I watch. Boom! My laundry room GFCI.
I jus got home and had no power in my garage. My beer fridge was completely defrosted so I checked all the breakers n everything looked fine so I jumped on youtube and found this video. My GFI had tripped on an outlet behind my toolbox which I actually forgot was even there. lol Eric thanks for making it buddy. It really helped me out
Thank you. You saved my sanity. I tried and couldn't find out why my sun room lights would not go on. Gfci outlet in there. Reset it, and bam let there be light.
Awesome video thanks for solving my problem after watching many many videos on TH-cam did not get my problem solved but I came around your video and oh man yes there was a GFI was tripped thanks again I appreciate all your help appreciate all the videos you’re making anyway thanks again
Nice guys to be helping out, everyone. Here is the problem, my Murphy 2 pole 60 amp breaker doesn't trip but all the power in the entire apartment shuts off, and everything comes back on again, by itself. This happens every day, 3 or 4 times a day. What could be the problem?
Thank you so much for this video. I thought at first it was the GFCI so I try to check all the plugs there was a plug behind the microwave and it had one of those really big plugs from you know with the big size plus that was in behind my microwave and though I looked I really didn't see it very well so after cutting off outside breaker box taken inside I really thought I was gonna have to call electrician so I decided to watch your video and it made me realize that maybe I need to go back and hunt and this time I pulled the microwave out a little further and pulled the plug out and just as I pulled the plug out I could see that it was pop so I just press that GFCI in and it worked. Thank you
I started having your exact experience! Only after they installed a new "thingy" whatever runs your A/C and Heat - you know what that big square thingy is - anyways I loose POWER the same way you did - only way I can "reset" is to turn the thing from Auto to ON! I notice the power issues happen when it kicks on and off - I think whoever installed it did something cause i haven;'t changed my habits since living here
Awesome tip. It was driving me nuts. It never occurred to me that one GFI would kill the whole circuit -- but it makes total sense when you think about it. Can't believe I never encountered this before. Nonetheless, the video saved me calling the electrician.
thanks for the info. But damn, we didn't need a full tour of your house and all your outlets for you to get to the point. It took 3 mins for you to get to the solution. Thanks again.
Eric Marler Didn’t mind the tour. Had same problem... but how does a gfi trip when nothing is being ran off that circuit? As far as video length, doesn’t you tube require a certain length?
The"tinkerer" obviously had the feed to your room wired to the "load" side of the GFI,which any electrician worth a carp can easily remedy![most electricians love to get calls like this...easy money!
Just wanted to say thank you so much you saved my girlfriend $4000 that’s with the electrician quoted me I couldn’t figure it out I’m a plumber by trade but I’m not too much of an arrogant bastard to ask for help your video nailed it I fixed all her power after we blew it about two weeks ago thank you so much wish I could buy you a beer or a whole keg of it
Be careful resetting gfci’s. They are designed to detect problems in a circuit. If it trips more then once you could have an actual issue. Also I don’t know where you live but where I am in Canada it’s against code to have plugs low to the ground and in closets. Also against code to have lighting circuits fed off of receptacles. Seems like the person who owned the house before you did some bad work. Might be a good idea to have an electrical inspector pass it. Otherwise you could have a house fire on your hands in the future.
Similar to this man finding a hidden outlet, i found a lightswitch that i never knew what it was for. Apparently the outlet is controlled by that switch 😅
Thank you very much almost just spent $50 on jew breakers but way 8n the back bathroom outlet the ONLY outlet in the house with one of them was indeed tripped lol
I had a switch that would get stuck so I tried to force it on but no luck. I called my electrician friend and he told me to pull it the opposite direction, wait a minute and then pull back on and then it worked.
Sorry for the very late response, but do you know those electrical outlets that are by water sources that have a button on them? For instance, the outlets in your bathroom near your sinks? That's what I'm talking about.
this will not always work. you could have a shot in an outlet that is not cgfi. finding that outlet is a pain. electrician told me they are usually outside because the heat and cold messes with the wires causing a short.
I had similar problem. Eight outlets in kitchen and breakfast area were out of power. Most outlets are not GFCI. I saw one GFCI and reset it but power still out. I then even replaced the breaker but it made no difference. After watching your video, I decided to look for all the GFCI outlets and found another one and reset it. That fixed the problem! Thanks so much, Eric. I thought a GFCI outlet only protects that outlet and that doesn't seem to be the case. Somehow these two GFCI outlets are daisy chained to all 8 outlets. Does anyone know how they are connected?
James Dent noted below that most GFCI outlets are split off of the main circuit. Typically, you'll see wires breaking off from the main circuit to the outlet so that it doesn't cause anything that is after that outlet to turn off as well. I'm going to be honest. I'm not 100% sure why the GFCI outlets are being thrown in my house. At this point, they are in my basement and I don't use that power anyway.
hey buddy thanks for the video i had got same problems and i fix it mian was in one of the bed room just one plug in was not working and i lost 3 bed room and bothroom akk in one 15 brecker and i really don't know to chaenge brecker or no once again thank u was really help full

dude...thanks so much, my girl has been so angry with me that I couldn't fix it....She's still angry, but the lights work! you're the man
Sounds like you need a new girlfriend! Nobody has all of the answers..
You're a life saver for posting this my daughter pressed a button on the outlet by mistake and I didn't think anything of it and my garage door stop working you just saved a phone call to the electrician!! Thanks so much!!
Good to hear.
Thank you. Saved me a call to an electrician. Appreciate you posting this.
Thanks for your video. I traced down and fixed the problem with my 10 year old daughter. Both of us learned something today!
Hey man, thanks a lot. My girlfriend and I just bought our first house, been in about 4 months and the shower light and closet light quit with no tripped breakers. Sure enough, there’s a GFI outlet hiding under the bathroom counter and flipping that fixed it all. Thanks again!
After testing all the breakers I was stumped. Thanks for this vid!!! 👍🏼👍🏼 fridge back on.
Thank you! My daughter’s entire room was pitch black. I asked her if she’s pressed the GFI (adjacent bathroom) and my son confirmed all breakers were fine. I went over to the GFI and it needed to be pressed harder. Everything works again and your video helped. Thanks a lot.
Had no expectations when watched the video, but, did the trick! Thanks..
Thanks for the moment of clarity! Half of my living room outlets and all the back deck lights were out. Watched your video and remembered the GFCI outlet on the back deck. Reset it and everything is back on. 👍

Eric Marler is yours basement central heat and air if not they probably put it down there because of moisture
James Dent I have a question I have hot wires all leading into a outlet but it does not work

That was a life saver, not to mention $100 to an electrician for pushing the reset on a gfi. Thanks a lot.
Just saved my butt too. My tripped outlet was covered behind my Bluetooth speaker and had forgotten all about it. Too bad I spent 2 hours troubleshooting and had purchased a multimeter and new breakers. Lol. I’ll return the breakers. Thanks!!
Worked like a charm. Saved me a ton of money.
Thank you so much for this info! You saved my husband and I a lot of aggravation!
Glad you explained in detail... same things I did except for the GFI.
Thank you!
I know the last comment was about a year ago, but Awesome my guy, thanks! I've been searching all day trying to figure out wtf is going on in my house. First video I watch. Boom! My laundry room GFCI.
My 2 month olds room had no power. I knew about the test gfis but forgot in the heat of the moment. Thanks man!

Thanks - I couldn,t figure out why there was no power to my new outlets until I seen your Video.
Thank you. You saved my sanity. I tried and couldn't find out why my sun room lights would not go on. Gfci outlet in there. Reset it, and bam let there be light.
.
you are a god damn life saver i spent forever looking at everything else BUT not that
Thank you very much. Your video helped to fix my problem by resetting the gfi outlet.
I luv these new GFCI's that don't indicate if it's actually tripped.
My house has a centralized GFCI switch. It's in the fuse box and so it's really useful instead of playing "hunt the socket"
Awesome video thanks for solving my problem after watching many many videos on TH-cam did not get my problem solved but I came around your video and oh man yes there was a GFI was tripped thanks again I appreciate all your help appreciate all the videos you’re making anyway thanks again
You sir are a life saver....
Bro you are the man. I have been banging my head over this. Thanks for putting this video up.
Awh... thanx so much for posting. Was changing breakers around and pulling ceiling fan apart and bingo, you nailed it. Was the GFCI. :)

Good to hear! Easy fix, right?
thanks for the info. But damn, we didn't need a full tour of your house and all your outlets for you to get to the point. It took 3 mins for you to get to the solution. Thanks again.
I realize that now lol. This video needs to be redone. It could only be 20 seconds.
IKR!?! Blah blah blah... find the GFI.
Eric Marler Didn’t mind the tour. Had same problem... but how does a gfi trip when nothing is being ran off that circuit? As far as video length, doesn’t you tube require a certain length?
Thank you! After watching this I found my tripped GFI breaker lite....my camera's are back up....Thank you for posting this!
OMG....that is EXACTLY what my problem was. thank you thank you thank you. your video what the first I watched before calling an electrician!
Yo thank u for this man!
Tfs..gee I would of never thought that. I checked the breaker and nothing. So now I will check gfi.
I’m having the same issue and can’t find any GfI outlets. Great video thank you 🙏
Me too Give us some on this one ? Thanks

What can you do with a thermometer
You saved me about 100 bucks just by watching your video, thanks
Exactly what happened, GFCI tripped. Thanks man.
This just saved me, the gfi on the other side of the house was tripped 🤦🏻♂️
Tried it. It worked. Next time I see ya, lunch is on me.
good video, but too bad I don't have any GFCI's to check. Guess I'll have to check my breaker next.
Similar to this man finding a hidden outlet, i found a lightswitch that i never knew what it was for. Apparently the outlet is controlled by that switch 😅
thNks! just save hundred bucks!
Thank you very much almost just spent $50 on jew breakers but way 8n the back bathroom outlet the ONLY outlet in the house with one of them was indeed tripped lol

Thank you so so much!! This was my problem too!!! Can’t believe it worked
Thank u sir dam GFI was in garage behind toolbox😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing.
What is a gfi adaptor? Was waiting for you to show and explain and show us the actual problem!
Sorry for the very late response, but do you know those electrical outlets that are by water sources that have a button on them? For instance, the outlets in your bathroom near your sinks? That's what I'm talking about.
You remind me of Dean Ambrose
I get that alot.

The dude before you was probably growing weed in that closet
I wish he would've left some
All; SKIP THIS!
Save 3 minutes and 33 seconds of your life. Look everywhere for GFIs.
You’re welcome.
Thanks brother, you help me save an , electrician visit.
omg just fixed my problem thank you
Helpful. Thanks.

My house is only 7 years old. Literally had it built 7 years ago only homeowner. Should i be having this problem already after just 7 years?
Thanks man. Just had a big storm. Currently hunting for my own mystery gfi. What are the odds that dude was growing weed in your closet lol?
Thanks, you saved me an electrician service call.
Thanks
Thank you! Thank you! This worked!
Ghost in your closet!!!
Thanks! Solved my problem. :)
Sounds like you've got a grow room for the ganja 😒👌💨
It worked!
Thanks bro
Are bathroom light down stairs wasn't working ... There was a gfi in the bathroom but as we where checking all gfi in the house it was the one in the garage
