Now Genghis Khan was riding horses at three years old (some say before he could walk) and at ten a man stole a horse so Genghis Khan chased the man down and slew him at ten years old. The men watching him do this were so impressed that they decided to follow Genghis Khan when he was only ten years old. About those easier ways to seduce. Do you need any followers here on You Tube.

    The character of Valeria I feel is the way a strong female should be portrayed. In todays climate, script writers seem to feel that a female characters strength relies on either ridiculing / dismissing men or having to overcome "The Patriarchy". Valeria shows that the real strength of a character is in how they interact with others, and allowing yourself to share your vulnerabilities as well as your strengths. She knew what she was capable of, and did it incredibly well, she didn't feel the need to prove her worth to anyone.

  • @myTERAexperience

    Also the fact this was shot with real weapons, amazing, but dangerous... the actress playing Valeria literally had her finger cut off during the scene where she beheaded the guy. They stopped filming and rushed to the hospital having it reattached, they went back, and she finished the scene. She's literally a badass.

    The skeleton in the tomb was an Atlantean general or king….also a giant….his sword could be considered a gift from Crom.

    • @JK-sc8th
      @JK-sc8th 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I read somewhere that the skeleton was supposed to be Kull the Conqueror, who was Atlantean and died thousands of years before Conan. If so, it ties together Robert E. Howard's two creations, Conan and Kull. Literally a passing of the sword from one creation to another.

    • @kiillabytez

      In the novel, the skeleton came to life and Conan had to defeat the undead king as a test to see if Conan was worthy of his blessing. Crom was guiding Conan the whole film, if it wasn't apparent.

    The movie’s metaphor of the Riddle of Steel isn’t commonly solved. The forged sword isn’t strong, as Conan breaks his father’s sword in the hands of Thulsa Doom’s goons. Flesh isn’t strong, as Conan proves by killing Thulsa Doom and so many others that their servants’ loyalty can’t protect them.
    At the end, it is Conan’s integrity and determination that is stronger than steel or flesh (hence the quote at the beginning of the film).

    It is no mistake that this film opens with an Nistzschean quote about what does not kill us makes us stronger. There's so much allegory and metaphor used throughout this tail and a lot of substrata of deeper meanings and philosophical questions that are flirted with throughout the narrative. For all intents and purposes Conan's life is not unlike the forging of his father's sword being pounded and shaped in fire, Caustic and each subsequent strike of the hammer hardening the blade and hardening Conan's resolve. When that sword is quenched in the snow bank and the blade contains the passion and craftsmanship and Artistry and history of his people it is not unlike the story The Wizard is telling us of Conan's life and the overwhelming odds that shaped and hardened him. When you consider the literary subject matter of this movie is practically the prototype for sword-and-sorcery as it would become known subsequently after Robert E Howard's death in the 19 30s... I find it remarkable that there is so much love and attention to detail that was poured into this seemingly simple tale of Revenge and endurance in the face of overwhelming odds. That the Conan stories would Inspire so much love in these filmmakers who did it all with practical effects in real time, and brought the world of hybria to life so many years before all things geek became mainstream pop culture this film was an underdog back then and it still holds up today. I think at its core it is about human feelings and relations... and well some of the characters are more archetype then individual and fully flushed out characterizations, they serve nobly as the linchpins that tie the humanity of the story together. That Bond of love and loyalty between these people in a Savage world that does not care if they live or die is still heartwarming to me. For all the epic battles for all the gore and hints of Arcane sorcery hiding in the Darkness waiting to pray on the human heart good still triumphs. Not good in the vanilla, cliche Knights and Shining Armor Renaissance Faire shenanigans that is so prevalent in tabletop RPGs currently but good as a strength of character and spirit. The pantheon of gods all intermingling and as you nailed it the perception of what the gods represent as a reflection of humanity in their intentions is ever-present and even in the midst of an pulp cheese storyline. They allocate time for the characters should actually discuss the different fields as it could change to their day-to-day lives... and you see that they find a common ground even through their differences. Chrome, odin, lilith, the four winds.. all are present in the high borian Mythos because it is supposedly predates the world that would become different continents eventually. I could go on and on and I've already blathered way too long, but I did want to say that I found your reaction and your thoughts along the way truly insightful, and the things you appreciated about this film even with its shortcomings here and there.. were really wonderful to see. By and large reaction videos don't do much for me as I just don't usually find a great deal of intriguing depth Within other people's thoughts on things that I've grown up loving for the entirety of my life such as fantasy, music Etc but for some reason I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this. Cheers. M.

    L. Sprague de Camp's novelization of this film is a good read... Robert E. Howard, the creator and original writer of Conan claimed that the only and best way to write a Conan story was to imagine that Conan stood next to him and was dictating the story to the writer... In D&D, most interpretations of Conan would be a multi-class of Barbarian, Fighter, and Rogue.

    John Milius really captured the whole feel and authenticity of a mythical Earth, between the sinking of Atlantis and the dawn of Modern History, the Hyborean Age. The Giant Skeleton in the Tomb was inferred to be the King of Atlantis, and the sword Conan took from his grip was the only one in the World to be made of Atlantean steel, which is why at the End, Conan was able to cut through his Father's sword, wielded by Thorgrim. The King seemed to bow, acknowledgement that a worthy successor had come to wield a Royal Sword, and Conan bowed back.So many scenes I like from this, the background music at the Temple of Set during the sacrifice (minus the female choir), was an excerpt from a genuine piece of medieval music, forget its name?
    Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan and Sandahl Bergman (Valeria-but we never heard her name spoken once in the movie), definitely had a chemistry, and together with Gerry Lopez (the Mongol, Subotai), all convinced me they were super skilled in sword fighting, thanks to the intense training the actors went through.
    I thought James Earl Jones was miscast as Thulsa Doom, he just didn't project enough gravitas and menace for me, as the Villain. Did you spot Set Designer Ron Cobb in a small cameo as the Black Lotus dealer?
    And Basil Poledouris composed such a Powerful and Emotive score, totally fits the "Feel" of the movie, and the Age it was set in, its one of my favourites. Glad you enjoyed it 😊

    It always bothered me in the theatrical release how Conan was able to just appear at the top of the mountain at the end without encountering any resistance. Then I saw the deleted scenes where the princess shows Conan a hidden way to the top the mountain to kill Thulsa Doom and even helps distract the few guards they encounter allowing Conan to kill them without raising any alarms. She then willing left with Conan to return to her father's Kingdom proving that she has been fully 'deprogrammed'. Dunno why they didn't keep that in the film.

      Will is an excellent answer the the riddle of steel as it pertains to Conan himself. Another possibility is love, not in its cheesy sense, but in terms of the bonds between Conan and his companions - whether it be his comrade Subotai who saves him from crucifixion, or his lover Valeria who twice saves him from death, even coming back "from the pit of hell" to fight at his side.

    Conan wouldn’t have returned the Princess to her father, even if they had filmed that. There’s an unfinished scene where the king’s guards murder him, as they too had secretly joined the snake cult. They couldn’t get the blood packs to work correctly, so they just abandoned the scene. In any case, Conan brought the princess home to discover that she was now the queen.

    Things get super muddled with Conan's mythology, partly because Robert E Howard wanted some flexibility.. there are some Norse like elements mixed in with the name of a Celtic god Crom worshipped by Conan's people the Cimmerians who were an IRL Celtic people. Fun trivia Conan was a very popular name in Brittany at least four of the ruling Dukes had the name.... and since fictional Conan later goes on to rule Aquilonia (IRL that is the name of the Western Kingdom, but am fuzzy on that at the moment), which is located in what is our France.. it has always given me a nerd giggle.

    It was the driving force.
    It's been said by many that neither Conans father nor Thulsa Doom were correct with their answers for the riddle of steel.
    I think it's implied that the answer is the will of the warrior. The synergy of both flesh and steel.

    Hi I havent seen you since CLASH OF THE TITANS
    You know your historic mythology it seems, I would say the themes of CONAN THE BARBARIAN are- survival and revenge, plus the connection between the two, of course. this is definitely a VIKING film & NOT so much a savage fantasy (which is more the themes of the comics & novels) BUT taken as a stand alone film, this works brilliantly, here we have a melding of- Medieval, Mongolian & Arab culture, very well put together.
    The Princess was never central to the story, we don't even see her until half way in (unlike in routine fairy tales) therefore we didnt need any visual closure to her story aspect, instead we have an epilogue scene of King Conan sat upon his throne.
    the Directing of this film, is near perfect for the material it is, there are plenty of story layers, but they come in symbolism (something most first time viewers will fail to notice probably) the Sword play, hmm it looked fine to my eye, had it have been in something like MASK OF ZORRO where it's all light weight Aluminium swords and bombastic fight scenes it probably wouldnt have worked, you could tell they didnt want everything to look too perfect, if 10,000 yrs ago they even had swords they would be heavy especially belonging to Kings, therefore fights would look crude but powerful, which is what we have here.
    Did you like Basil Polidouris great music score? who did an equally good a job on ROBOCOP

  • @mojothemigo
    @mojothemigo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I THINK I read that Conan's dad figured out a great way to make swords and Thulsa-Doom gave him an ultimatum of working for him or be killed. Don't know how much of that is true, you would be right about having Conan's dad at your side making more swords would be optimal and would make sense as T.D. is treated as wise as he is evil
