This is the most convincing argument I’ve heard on the topic of music and Islam. Surely sitting back listening to Beethoven’s ‘Adagio’ helps ground the soul and improves focus on life

I'm honestly not sure. I am a newish Muslim, and I don't want to be led astray. I love classical music, but have been told that all music can lead to being forgetful of prayer and Allah. Just the other day, I threw away my instrument (I played the tuba for 19 years) because I was led to believe that playing it means I incur sin. Honestly, the thought of never listening to Mozart or Beethoven again makes me extremely sad. May Allah make it easy for me ( if I'm really not suppose to even listen to classical music), Ameen.

I'm afraid you're easily convinced. I don't mean to be disrespectful, nor do I believe music is necessarily haram, but this was hardly a legitimate treatment of the Shari'ah ruling on music. To even call it an argument is questionable.

@ I’m honestly not sure. Some say the hadiths about music are not all strong, but it’s safe to assume that it’s definitely not permissible to listen to music containing haram topics. All the hadiths about music mention examples of music being used for evil purposes and unfortunately that has stuck with the majority of the Ummah. I’m sorry to say that I’m a part of that. I don’t know the consequences, so I try to stay away from music 😢

Music is not actually that bad, people ruined the music when it comes to economy, satanism, sex, drugs, violence, explicit lyrics, opposite religions and more bad things. That's why music is considered haram in Islam. I hate how do people ruin the music with some ungreatful ingredients. As a Muslim I will always agree that music is always haram.

Thank you for touching on this in this way. I think people forgot what music even means; it is any kind of sing-song or any kind of rhythmic beating of a table or anything of the sort. Any musical thing can be considered music. Did you ever hum? That could be music. Did you ever let out a tune through your voice? Music. Did you ever clap your hands in some kind of a beat? That is music. Why people are so afraid of music is beyond me. There is good, beautiful music such as the very famous and beloved "tala'al badru Alayna" all the way to Twinkle Twinkle little star, and all the way to some very bad, inappropriate rock songs and the like. Why are people only thinking of the bad, inappropriate songs? They don't encompass the entire world of musical art.

As Salaam O Alaikum guys. Honestly, all the most reputable scholars out there say that it is Haraam. From Mufti Menk, Sheikh Assim Al Hakeem etc etc and they provide strong evidences (from the Quran and Sunnah) backing up their statements. Therefore, I believe the safer option is to consider it haraam and not indulge in it. This is coming from a music lover btw. I play the bass and was in several bands for many years (local bands) and even opened for a famous international act. I love music and I know and beleive that it is haraam and have managed to cut down on it significantly Alhamdulillah. The speaker may be sincere but sincerity doesn't always mean you are right. Ustadh, I was of the impression al-Azhar encouraged a madhab-centric model to understanding Islam. Accordingly, am I correct in believing the dominant position in the four schools of thought is the impermissibility of music? Why so? - and when is it ok to stray from the Madhahib? Would appreciate your clarification.

salam. just wondering Dr.. if it's the lyrics only, if it's ok to listen to mozart so is it ok also to listen to hard rock metal instrumental? because it also inspires, like it gives someone hype and energy to wake up for fajr.. and is "singing" the Qur'an the same as reciting the Qur'an with beautiful voice or by beautifying the voice...?

May Allah guide this speaker and his teachers at Al-Azhar. Music is impermissible. There is a difference between musical instruments and poetry. Poetry contains lyrics and is independent of musical instruments

Bad judgement, if you view it only trough lyrics. There are many genres , such as trance with only electronic music, which some people use on drugs. The less music the better for everyone. Music interferes with neurotransmitters in body, especially dopamine, and especially in brain. On the other hand, as far as I know, there's a rule in Islam, that what ever is harmful in large quantities is not allowed in small quantitiy.

Did they allow it? Where does the shariah allow music..did the 4 imams allow it and say it is halal??

The Prophet p.b.u.h allowed it in some context. One of it is during Eid when his wife Aisha is listening to a slavewoman singing and dancing, and Abu Bakr enter the house, upon seeing this, scolded her daughter. The Prophet stopped him, and say every people have their celebration days, and we Muslims have eid, so it's not wrong as means of celebration. Another hadith is when the Prophet p.b.u.h says the duff is permissible for women to play. There's other hadiths as well.
The position of music being permissible is agreed by the ulema. One of whom is Yusuf Al Qardhawi. It's not mere opinion from this ustadh. Wallahu Aalam.
