i 1000% respect the whole "buying it because it appeals to me" rather than because it's valuable, i personally collect toy and scale model cars, mostly hot wheels and matchbox, and some of the collector stuff can really get up there. luckily, it kinda appeals to me to collect the stuff no one else wanted, especially if it's really cool!
like, not a lot of hot wheels collectors are particularly jumping up and down at the chance to get a wood-clad atari-inspired gmc motorhome, or a dodge caravan with colored stripe sidewall, for example. my favs are the oddball promotional cars, where a manufacturer will pay hot wheels to make their car into a toy. just seems funny to me to see an oldsmobile aurora, saturn ion, or honda odyssey, within the same realm as hot rods that resemble dinosaurs
