Anita Baker sported that style (and soulful contralto) first, not a shade on Toni, but props to originator AB

Yes, co-written and co-produced by Babyface. Toni's 2nd single and her first crossover smash (#7 Pop and #2 R&B) which started a long string of hits peaking with the stunning "Un-break My Heart (#1 for 11 weeks in 1996), one of the biggest hits of all-time by a solo artist.

This song was the first single of her debut self-titled album. The self-titled was a mix of up-tempo songs like ''Another Sad Love Song'' and ''I Belong to You'' mixed with beautiful ballads like ''Breathe Again'' and ''You Mean The World to Me''. After two successfuls singles of his sountrack Boomerang, this song was released has the first single of her debut solo album. I always love this song since i hear in youtube back in 2009-2010. This song was her first top 10 entry in the US charts, reaching in n.7 in 1993. The song was a turning point and a lead out to the huge success of the next single of the debut album, ''Breathe Again'', her first international hit and her first top 5 single in US.

"Love Shoulda Brought You Home" was her first single (coming via the "Boomerang" soundtrack). It peaked at #33 Pop and #4 R&B. The above single from her debut album gave her Top Ten Pop success and there was no stopping her from there.

The late 80s and early 90s featured SOOO many great male and female vocalists. If you're into some of Toni B.'s stuff, go listen to some selections from Keith Sweat ("Merry-go-round" is one of his best in my opinion) to see how the guys could throw it down as well. Also, check out "We're Not Makin' Love No More" by Dru Hill..classic!

There were 2 versions of this video. The international color version is the one most folks who grew up in the 90’s are familiar with. It’s what they played on VH1, MTV, and BET (once the song started taking off).
The BTS scoop on how this song came to be: Toni auditioned as a group with her sisters. She was chosen as a solo artist from the bunch ( she used her sisters as backup once she got going). Once signed, she was asked to cut a demo for the song “Love shoulda brought you home” for the Boomerang soundtrack- which was sent to Anita Baker for her consideration. Anita was pregnant at the time so she declined recording the song, but she insisted that the girl they used on the demo should record it. The producers reluctantly took Anita’s advice and allowed an unproven Toni to record the track. The song caught fire when people heard it in the movie and started requesting it like crazy at radio stations.
“Don’t wanna love you” by Shanice (there’s a complicated story about this artist and this song. I’ll fill you in whenever you react to her) was set to be the 4th single from the soundtrack but given the demand, a video was hastily put together and “LSBYH” was released as Toni’s first solo single.
Not only did the song blow up, the demand for a Toni album was sky high. The record company set out to meet the demand and her debut album was hurriedly put together. Many of the songs on the album were intended for or written with Anita Baker in mind so the album was 🔥as you can imagine. She went on to release 6 (one double sided) singles from her self titled debut album. This was the first single from the album.
Just about every album review at the time highlighted the song “Best friend” as a standout track on the album. If released, I think it could’ve been the raw emotional anthem that “Not gon’ cry”was for Mary J Blige. Toni didn’t like the subject matter so it was never released. She co-wrote the song, but if my memory serves me correctly, she said it would’ve been too emotionally difficult to sing if it were released. It’s definitely a quality track that’s worth checking out.
The first time most people saw or heard of Toni Braxton was when she appeared in a duet with Babyface for the song “Give U my heart.”She also appeared in the video-which was the first single from the immensely successful Boomerang soundtrack.
If you’ve never heard of whistle note hitting Shanice, check out “Loving you” “I love your smile” “Silent Prayer” and “Turn down the lights.” Shanice was primed to rival Mariah Carey as one of the biggest superstars of the 90’s but her career took an unfortunate left turn that she never recovered from.

@@EmpressReacts I almost forgot that there was a third version of this video. It’s the remix version. That’s the one most people will recognize. I actually think you will like that version of the song better too. It’s a very subtle difference but I think it makes a difference in the vibe of the song. The “heard it on the radio last night” break from the remix is what I always remember first when I think of that song.
