Just brought the new 48 hayter with split roller also has Honda engine like the 41 only the 56 has a Briggs 190 engine. Happy with mine at the moment 👍
I’ve just bought the 56 domestic Hayter Harrier and it does a marvellous job. I’m not a contractor just for my garden. It’s is like a hoover got a 5 year warranty too.
Good review for this honda, as a purely domestic user, i would have loved a honda hrx, but the price is way out of my range, 1300 euro. after watching a good few reviews of different mowers, i finally went with a weibang wb537scv 3 in 1, the first thing i noticed was how well built it is, shaft drive, no belt, for just over half the price of the honda, it weighs nearly 50kg, but it is so well balanced and easy to turn, professionals are giving it great reviews. That is what swung it for me.
I’m currently in the process of deciding on buying a new mower, hence decided to preview what people say on YT. Thanks for your great review of the Honda (one on my list for consideration) I appreciate your practical user insights and ‘niggles’, as you rightly say they may be small, but can become annoying over time and after prolonged use. The leaves ‘snow ploughing’ tendency would only become apparent during autumn and is valuable pre-knowledge for me as I have several large oak trees nearby that inevitably find their way onto my lawn.
Hello Lee I started out over 20 years ago contracting ,and I initially went with Mountfield mowers but I just thought they were built for domestic use ,and certainly couldn't cope for professional use.i then upgraded to hayter mowers was optimistic but one let me down with engine problems kept cutting out ,and the other just gave up completely was so disappointing after hearing good reports from other people. So third time lucky went with honda and never looked back,I love them and wouldn't swap them for anything else.fabulous engine and mighty reliable and make a lovely job.
I agree,in thirty years in garden maitenance, ive used hayters honda, even tried a kubota, hand mower ,all have pros and cons ,but ended up back with the hayter 56,its the best all rounder ,drive can be problem, but mowers will suffer drive problems ,even shaft drive ,which are costlly to fix ,
I have a Hayter Harrier 48 219T from 1996 and its built like a battleship and still going strong, nothing deters it, long grass, leaves, sticks, it cuts it all and keeps rolling. I’ve tried modern Husqvarnas, Stihl’s, Ego and even Hondas and they are toys by comparison!
I have a Hayter and a Honda, I bought the Honda because I cant get on with the Hayter. If the grass is dry and not too thick, the Hayter does a nice job. But if its wet or long, forget it. They both get clogged, BUT the Honda is built for mulching as well so it tends not to spit too much grass out when clogged, whereas the Hayter gets clogged and spits the grass everywhere and refuses to cut. I have the Harrier 48 Autodrive ES VS InStart, took the bag off to do a lawn and still got clogged, it does have a split roller. On the plus side, the{EDIT dandle
Great review, very interesting! I'm a domestic user so my mower is only used a couple of hours a week but I like things to work properly! I bought a shaft drive 448 lawnflite pro in 2004 which had the original (made in Japan?) Honda engine - this has been brilliant and still starts with a single gentle pull. It did use to clog when the grass was wet. Unfortunately the drive now jumps a bit despite being adjusted to the max and with a new gearbox costing £400 plus fitting It was time for a new mower. (I can see the drive issue would be a big ££ problem for you pros using the machine all the time!) I researched and ended up buying a Weibang Legacy 48 pro BBC. This cuts well and is very solidly built. The Kawasaki engine starts first pull. However it is VERY heavy at 66kg versus 42kg for the Honda tested here. Also it has a long wheel base so tends to scalp if set low. I'm going to give it to my son !! So I have been looking again for a new mower. Narrowed it down to the Honda HRX 476 QX or the Hayter Harrier 48 BBC. Then my 2 local dealers both said they do not sell the Hayter 48 BBC because the BBC system on the Hayter is rubbish. They said to get the 48 ES VS - which looks like a neat system. Then I read reviews on the Honda and they are very mixed, sometimes criticising build quality, reliability and performance etc. So now my brain hurts ! I do like having a BBC (Roto-stop) so the Honda looks like the best option? Unless I just get another Lawnflite pro and hope the Subaru engine is ok? Like Chrome book says - there is no perfect mower. Any advice would be appreciated
Geoffrey Pullan Hi Geoffrey...sorry don't think I can give you any advice .... after 30 years gardening... MY head still hurts 🤣🤣🤣 when the person brings out the perfect mower they will be an instant billionaire 😁😁 thanks for watching bud👍
Great review as always Lee, started up my gardening business this year and went with the 426 Hrx roller, and yes, I agreed with all of those points, cuts and collects nicely, and yes have nearly disembowelled myself on the handles more than once as well, but got rid of it because it was so slow. Swapped it for the Hayter 41 Pro, so far so good!! Keep up the good work mate
I have just bought the HR537HYE which has the new 200cc engine. It collects leaves well and better still if the front is adjusted up a notch. The Versamow variable mulch is really useful and effective. However, no roller on this model.
I love these videos. The Hayter 48. Not 46. At 2:45 you mentioned the biggest problem I find with hondas. Have you got your Honda engine revved up? The governor spring adjusted to rev more. The Hayter 41 pro is great. Engine. Collection. Stripe. Spilt roller. Cut quality. The 48 pro is a great machine but last time I looked they weld the rollers together. You can cut them down the middle. Hayter might not agree. But I have seen it done. The 56 pro is great. Split roller and in my honest opinion the best cut quality. I have used hondas with new blades and Hayters and the Hayter does the best cut. However. The 48/56 pros do clog up on damp lawns. When they are new and clean etc they do well. Once they start getting clogged it’s a bit of a nightmare to be honest. They have fins at the front underneath that help with the leaves. Don’t plough like Honda. I would personally go with the 41 pro as the engine is strong. 4.5hp. Spilt roller and great performance. However it will take longer to get jobs done obviously compared to a 19” mower. And the stripes will go funny until it’s mowed the lawn a few times. Might be worth blowing it all over to roughen it up first to help print the stripes. Hope that helps you Lee. Take care
Gregs Mowing hi Greg. Yes mate ive moved the spring to the nearest hole . Yes those fins on the front of the hayter actually worked!!.. might join the hayter army soon .👍
Having used both the Honda 476 and the Hayter 48, I do prefer the Hayter. The Honda is a little too slow, only has 5 cutting heights and the bag is difficult to empty. Having said that, the Honda's roller is made of metal - unlike the Hayter, which has a split plastic roller, that breaks after a while and is a bastard to replace and fit.
Great honest review. I've never used petrol mower and I'm thinking about buying one to get into gardening as a side gig. I am looking into the second hand market and lots of people said you can't go wrong with a Honda...but apparently you can. Can anyone recommend anything around the £250 mark? I know I've got lots to learn about mowers, their repairs and servicing, but I could really do with some encouragement. Thanks All.
Cracking honest review. I have a basic Mountfield which seems to suit my needs.. I have to lift it out of my vehicle! Trouble is.. It drops wet grass all over as it is being wheeled.. seems to get trapped between the underside base and the bar that adjusts all 4 wheels at once. I use a Hayter at a customers house and it is soooo reliable. Just heavy!
Good thoughtful review. Good guy too .... I have a Hayter Autodrive Electric Start, but fancy an HRX426QX. I have spent loads on new rollers for the Hayter @ £50 a go. Wet sticking grass causes them to break..... Not sure what to do now....
I can only talk about the old 48(2017) hayter but they have the same problems with not picking up and blocking up . I was told from hayter dealer that the new 48 is basically the new 41 plus 7 so they have used everything from the 41 but just made it bigger so id go for the 41 or 56 on that if you went to a hayter .
@@LHLgardenservices arh right thought all the new hayters did .and yes can not agree more and I've said it a few times no mower is perfect and everyone will find niggles with at least one of them
My hayter blocks up in the discharge vent all the time. It doesn't collect grass properly either there are as many lines of grass as stripes. The cut on yours is much better
Well I will dare to argue with you 😆 I have had a mcculloch 16 in petrol mower basic model I expect . It has a briggs Stratton engine and it has never let me down in 30 years it cost us 99 quid ,shop floor model lol ,maybe I've just been lucky , but I dread when it goes over the lawnmower 🌈 bridge as the newer models are just not the same . So fingers crossed 🤞 it dosent give up just yet . BTW never had a service either . Lol OK I'm not doing what you are Lee , but I'd say that was pretty good going .
ive got a 48 pro hayter, bought it 2 years ago and experienced loads of problems, but got them sorted out under warranty, honda engine split roller, fantastic cut, ime also looking to buy a new mower, for the oncomming season, so ime looking at all the reviews on different mowers, but the hayter is just at the front buy the odd point, but my options are still open.
Thanks - Great review! I'm looking at the smaller HRX426 or Hayter Harrier 41 - Domestic models. Even though I'm a Honda fan - i'm going to choose Hayter on this occasion! Cheers
Hi Lee do you think as a gardener it looks more professional to use a mower with a roller for the end result. When do you stop mowing the lawns for the year? Thanks Simon
Great video pal I’d go with the hayter , iv got the new hayter 41 pro with the Honda engine and I’m more than happy with it, it’s very good in the wet and it picks up the leaves very well, it is a smaller cut but it’s that fast you don’t notice it, hope this helps 👍
Gregs Mowing Your right there mate I’m more than happy with the hayter , sometimes iv got two mowers in the van and I always seem to go and get the hayter out of the two 👍
Hi Lee iv got the 48 and that has a split roller I think the cut is on par with the Honda but if never had a Honda and dnt think ill ever get one lol so can't really say much on that but it's hayter or mountfeild pro all the way for me... talking really well in front of the camera keep it up mate 👍👍👍
Why would you not just buy a honda pro roller, far superior to a hayter pro. The build quality is on a different level, the honda hrh series are built to last
Hi lee I was wondering where is the best place for me to get garden machinery lawnmowers streamers things like that as I like to go to the shop and not order stuff on line reason being if I have any problems I can go straight back to the shop but I really don’t have a clue where to go? If you could help me out I would really appreciate it thanks and keep up the good work your vids are really helpful I have learnt so many little tips from you so thanks once again 👍🏼
I'm looking at a new roller mower for next year but so many to choose from. I do like the idea of the new Hayter harrier pro 41 which comes with Honda motor. But everyone says the Honda are most reliable? Can I ask how old the Honda is in this video and whether they have made any improvements on the gripes you had?
What’s your opinion on Stiga mowers ? I have lawns that are uphill and uneven ground with difficult access so I have tried a Petrol hover (Allen pro which is heavy and cumbersome but very powerful) a Fiskers push pull manual ( good cut but dead loss in tight areas only good in straight lines) Danarm brushcutter ( functional but not very aesthetic finish) Honda izy self propelled heavy to lift and I’m not getting any younger. What I need is a lightweight Petrol mower with big wheels and a good range of height adjustment if you can suggest anything I’d very much appreciate
Mate buy a Viking I run 5 of them and they are solid, fast and light! Plus they cut wet grass and pick everything up!! Probably costs about the same also!!
I had a Viking 448 tiny slow mower, but you are right, it picked everything up never spat out and let me know when getting full and it really did fill the box.
I use mb650 and mb 655 they can keep up with work demands a bit better!! Also i use a mb4rtp mulcher they are great but it's a get it done mower....doest leave a great finish!
Neaver had prob with Honda using one 20 yr old same model without roller only ever needed general wearing parts plus a carb only thing I don’t like is the catch at the handle if u wearing flapping pockets
Did you get the HAyter Pro 56. I've been really disssapointed with the B&S engine on it. It's gutless and awful with wet grass. Hayter Pro 48 with Honda is great though.
Chris Evans garden services jones Jones Hi Chris...yes I agree...Ive got no problem with Briggs I think they are sound... I just rate Honda that bit more. 👍👍
That blade is the useless vented version that reduces noise. It also reduces suction. Swap it for a new solid one off eBay and it'll collect far better. I've got a 2004 model and it does the job.
You dont have to press anything to get it started 🤔🤔....if you mean start the blade running then yes...press the button in and then push the lever forward 👍👍
his wont start at all and there's no spark, i just wandered if they was a safety switch on the leaver or something. i did try it with the kill switch wire removed and still no spark, tried with another coil and plug and still no spark . its got me beat unless both coils are shot ?
Did you get the hayter in the end? The pro has the Honda engine. I'm thinking of getting a harrier 41. My garden is only small but you can't deny the hayter looks good if there is such a thing!
You are so right and it was Completely my own fault but l wish I’d of ripped my pants with that sharp bit you mentioned on the hondas handles , on one of my turns l scratched a twenty plate Range Rover , there went the profit for the week lol 😂
Hondas are well made but are hopeless at catching wet grass i speed the engine to max and use a pastic catcher with better air flow which helps also honds are over priced
theres no perfect mower! for me i would say if you want a honda mower that pick up great in all weathers buy a pro lawnflite! it does have gearbox issues etesia pick up great in the wet but newer models have wheel problems the weibang pro mowers pick and cut great and are very reliable but heavy the hayter pro cut great looks great but does not pick in the wet
Chrome book Ha ha ha well thanks bud you've made my head spin even more now🤣🤣🤣.....had a lawnflight.. heavy and I didn't like it. Heard the etesia are good so may look for dealer close by.You would think after all these years someone would make the all rounder 🤞🤞
get rid of it a gear box is 560 pounds over john deer gear boxs 90 pounds that why we try a honda but the gear box gave in in less than 2 years the pick up is shit over john deer and hayter due to the with of the hole but the honda is great cut but slow walk which why it cuts better
Gregs Mowing how we doing Greg I'm not so sure man trust me deere have there own faults for 1 on my john deeres I'd prefer a double cut blade as it would work far better with the turbo star fan system iv been looking at hayters and for me
I don't like the angle of the bag as there is going to be build up I'd like a higher lift twin cut blade to really pack the bag well my 3 john deere mowers fill the bag like a bale but the hayter does win on hight of cut as there are 25mm and hayter 13mm
Emerald Bren cheers mate been watching ye all here for some time here in cork Ireland the grass is the same colour haha but the problem still remains the same there is no mower on the market nearly 100% good enough for our cutting seasons
Emerald Bren what iv started to do is my oldest john deere 52s it has no blade clutch or anything so it's easier to try stuff out on i upgraded the engine and iv started to try blades from other makers in the hope I'll come across the perfect match but I will say I'd highly recommend a john deere turbo star mower
No Honda all the way I like hayter but there box is to small the Honda runs for ever I've go a Honda and a hayter the batter does not leave a good finish and the Honda is a better price them the hayter
Just brought the new 48 hayter with split roller also has Honda engine like the 41 only the 56 has a Briggs 190 engine. Happy with mine at the moment 👍

Ive got a Hayter 56 pro and the only 2 grumbles ive got is the pure weight of it and the shoot that leads to the bag needs to be alot bigger.
When I had hayters they used to be open the whole width of the back
I have used both, I find the Haytor does a better job but is heavy and harder to use, The Honda is great in good conditions
Its a matter of horses for courses. as supplied the Honda is a good grass cutter check with the dealer for different blades for different jobs.
👍
I have just bought the HR537HYE which has the new 200cc engine. It collects leaves well and better still if the front is adjusted up a notch. The Versamow variable mulch is really useful and effective. However, no roller on this model.

Don't know I think the Briggs and Stratton quantum 5hp and 5.5hp can be just as good if not better ..
👌👌
Best mowers for real long grass waist height been asked to cut any ideas cheers mate
So what did you get in the end? I'm thinking about getting the Hayter 56 pro or the one down... any thoughts?
I like ATCO and Husqvarnas. The best made mower ive ever seen is my Husqvarna mulching mower
What mower would you buy now lee
Mate buy a Viking I run 5 of them and they are solid, fast and light! Plus they cut wet grass and pick everything up!! Probably costs about the same also!!
James Parker hi thanks for watching...yeah definitely food for thought🙄🙄
I had a Viking 448 tiny slow mower, but you are right, it picked everything up never spat out and let me know when getting full and it really did fill the box.
I use mb650 and mb 655 they can keep up with work demands a bit better!! Also i use a mb4rtp mulcher they are great but it's a get it done mower....doest leave a great finish!
Viking are now Orange and are Stihl .
great review - thanks
Cheers 👍👍
Neaver had prob with Honda using one 20 yr old same model without roller only ever needed general wearing parts plus a carb only thing I don’t like is the catch at the handle if u wearing flapping pockets
Did you get the HAyter Pro 56. I've been really disssapointed with the B&S engine on it. It's gutless and awful with wet grass. Hayter Pro 48 with Honda is great though.
No Chris never did 👍
I have this Honda usually for small gardens but I use ha Honda hrd536 on a daily basis
Briggs and Stratton engines are very strong and Briggs been going for years and years
Chris Evans garden services jones Jones Hi Chris...yes I agree...Ive got no problem with Briggs I think they are sound... I just rate Honda that bit more. 👍👍
That blade is the useless vented version that reduces noise. It also reduces suction. Swap it for a new solid one off eBay and it'll collect far better. I've got a 2004 model and it does the job.
If I’m to buy again when it packs in not worth fixing I’d like to try the weibang
seems a well built mower but TOO heavy for my liking 👍👍
hi do you have to push the yellow button in to start it along with the lever as a neighbor has one and cannot start it ?
You dont have to press anything to get it started 🤔🤔....if you mean start the blade running then yes...press the button in and then push the lever forward 👍👍
his wont start at all and there's no spark, i just wandered if they was a safety switch on the leaver or something. i did try it with the kill switch wire removed and still no spark, tried with another coil and plug and still no spark . its got me beat unless both coils are shot ?
@@wichywoo 😯😯😯
Did you get the hayter in the end? The pro has the Honda engine. I'm thinking of getting a harrier 41. My garden is only small but you can't deny the hayter looks good if there is such a thing!
No..never went for a hayter 😊👍
since they have changed the frives on the hayters ive found there not reliable
The Hayter 41 has a plastic roller. The Honda's is steel.
You are so right and it was Completely my own fault but l wish I’d of ripped my pants with that sharp bit you mentioned on the hondas handles , on one of my turns l scratched a twenty plate Range Rover , there went the profit for the week lol 😂
😲😲😲...ooh I feel your pain Carl 🙈
I use both Hayters and Hondas and the hayter is the far supirior machine
👍👍😎
NIPP in garden Service glad you liked it Nige 👍
#hayterarmy
Try a john deere mate I run deeres
Noel Cahill Hayter is a better choice
Hayters gonna hayte.
No Honda all the way I like hayter but there box is to small the Honda runs for ever I've go a Honda and a hayter the batter does not leave a good finish and the Honda is a better price them the hayter
You don’t need a roller mower to do stripes
Chris Evans garden services jones Jones It definitely helps though.😂😂
You will like the new hayter 48 pro then
😡🥵😍
The 476 is a excellent mower. This chap is complaining this mower is built to last
"Built to last" has got NOTHING to do with the points I raise
U do have realies this is a old lawnmower so they mite off change it
Try a Honda pro next time
i dont like the Hondas at all. i have a little 100 quid lawnking which is bob on
👍👍
