I live outside of Pagosa Springs, Co. in a valley between mountains, and Buckskin is located downtown. They came out one time to retrieve a large track hoe that had turned completely over onto its side when the walls of the ditch it was digging collapsed on a very steep incline. He (Buckskin's driver) told the operator of the track hoe to strap himself into the seat though it was on its side, and then accelerate as soon as he got it upright with the winch cable. Then they pulled it uptight onto its tracks with the winch, and with help from the operator, they pulled it right up the hill and onto the dirt road. Amazing! . A few years later my neighbor was towing a large 5th wheel RV behind his dualie pickup back to his home, and he turned too late and overshot the dirt road leading to his driveway. The whole rig went off the dirt road and down the hill until he was finally able to stop it, though it was in an extremely precarious position, upright but leaning dangerously sideways downhill on the same incline I just mentioned. It looked like any movement forward or backward would set it rolling down the hill or tumbling sideways down the hill. The neighbor came to me and asked if I could get the rig back on the road with my 40 hp tractor. No way could that work, but I called Buckskin and the driver had no problem straightening it all out and getting the truck/RV back onto the dirt road safely. Some sort of extreme geometry, I guess. No problem. I was so amazed at the driver's skills that I went straight to my home, a short walk away, and called Buckskin's office and told them that I had just witnessed a remarkable thing. These people are artists of the highest level!!!

Holy ouch, never experienced Mountain Driving out West when I was an OTR Driver, way back when, I’m glad now! Geez.Drove a car up and down Big Bear mountain? California, my parents came out to visit me in the early 80’s, up and down the Mountain pass, they were scared to death, hairpin turns and a cliff on the side of the highway, they never experienced that b4, I could smell my breaks burning up, she had my Father drive, dunno why, I was doing good. Scary in a car, let alone a big rig.
I remember when Wolf Creek pass was a narrow 2 lane highway. It was horrible. Now it’s an interstate in comparison with the way it used to be. We used to live in Pagosa Springs. We’re thinking about moving back after retirement.
Years ago, old Rt.22 west in Pennsylvania used to go down the side of a mountain (part of the Allegheny Mountains) from Cresson, PA to Duncansville, PA (and near the famous Horseshoe railroad curve). Trucks were constantly losing their brakes or just plain speeding down the mountain and often were unable to stop at the bottom. I don't know how many people died in total over the years when out of control trucks ran over cars or ran into trees or other obstructions at the bottom in Duncansville, but it was a lot. It finally got to the point where they had to pass a law that all trucks must come to a complete stop in Cresson at the top, shift into low gear and creep down the mountain. At some point they added an escape ramp part way down as well. Those changes helped but it remained dangerous. That stretch of highway has now been completely bypassed by an interstate highway.
My daddy was teaching me to drive a truck in the 70,s he let me drive off of the Grapevine, CABBAGE, TEHACHAPI, and different places, but never off of WOLF CREEK PASS, thank goodness we did not run out that way many times.

I've been an OTR for 16 years and never been down wolf creek pass. I've done donners Pass, The grapevine I-5, the dragon tale I-40 going thru Knoxville and Carolina.
I have been over Wolf Creek Pass 30 or 40 times. When I started driving back in the 70s a lot of trucks didn't have Jake brakes. Mine did NOT! You have the rest of your life to get to the bottom even if it is 1st gear. 45 years and still TRUCKING
There have been a hundred or more trucks go over the side there since the pass opened. If they did not clean most of the wreckage up it would look like a dump.
I remember driving that 2 lane Hiway. It was really scary at night. I haven’t been back home in many years, but I’m sure like the rest of the roads, there has been a lot of change.
About a week before seeing this video I saw a dash cam video from a truck going up Wolf Creek Pass at this same spot when possibly this truck was crashing over the side.
Family of truckers here. I love you guys and respect your diligent work. Where is this wolf pass located? The landscape is absolutely gorgeous!!prayers to the lost drivers, looks like they flew to heaven!
THE FIRST THING I WAS TAUGHT WHEN DRIVING A TRUCK IS DON’T GO DOWN THE HILL ANY FASTER THAN YOU CAN GO UP IT. IF YOU BREAK THAT RULE YOU MORE THAN LIKELY WILL EXPERIENCE A RUNAWAY TRUCK EVENTUALLY. IF YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT WITHIN THE FIRST TWO YEARS DRIVING A TRUCK YOU BETTER QUIT BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT MAKE IT THE LONG RUN. DILIGENCE IS REQUIRED!
Helicopter comment 1). Truck 100 times too heavy to pick up with Heli. And technically impossible. (Google video of helicopter logging, observe difficulty and skill required) 2. Why Risk 2 million $ machine to recover $100K machine, that is now worth $ 1,000 scrap metal and kill a second (or 3,4 persons). Math not there. 3. reason for removing it primarily saves the environment from toxic leaks. (Gas, Oil, Batteries etc etc) And restores the view somewhat. 4. Doing it as safely as it can be done under the circumstances. I lived in Colorado. Lot of places the cars (or trucks) are still there. It was TOO risky. 5. People do incredible dangerous and risky jobs everyday., I just never see or even KNOW about them. Drone is killer to bring that in. 6. When i start whining about my cell service, I youtube the guy that climbs up a 500' bean pole to change a fuse when my bars drop. 7. State makes truck Insurance company PAY for toxic cleanup too,

Now that I’ve seen the wider angle shot I don’t think this was a suicide like people in the other videos mentioned. The turn is so long the truck probably just understeered so badly the trucker couldn’t have made the turn, and had to decide whether to hit the barrier and go off the cliff, or go right and hope it’s a road that goes on for a ways.
