I have to disagree with the final point made, that if you weren't on the DOOM wave you just missed it and can't appreciate it (if that was what he was saying). Maybe I"m a weird case because I got into hip hop through 90s east coast hip hop, but the first time I listened to Madvillainy was 2014 and it had the mind blowing effect that Myke is describing. I wasn't part of that particular moment in time where everyone was realizing together how dope this album was, but it still was a profound moment for me personally. And it changed my musical tastes for the better I think.
Skyedogg it's not that you can't appreciate the music if you didn't listen to it when it came out, its that you lose the history of its reception amongst the hip hop community. You lose in the memories that a lot of people share when thinking about the album. We are all going to remember what was going on when DAMN came out and took the world by storm. Since you listened to this album in 2014, ten years after it came out, then you lose out on that.
I love how varied all of you are, how Feefo is more the mainstream listener, Myke is more the experimental listener, Beezy is more the producer focused, and Kinge is, I guess, a bit of all three. And we can't forget Modest Media who throws in his two cents too! I think these differences make for a very entertaining listen, whether yall agree or disagree, or all or nothing! Great reviews, damn it!
Never forget hearing all caps for the first time on the boondocks. Shit opened the door to underground rap music for me. As far as influence, you hear him in new rappers like Earl Sweatshirt, Bishop Nehru, Capital Steez, Chester Wattson, and even in Joey Bada$$ earlier style. On top of that, dude has one of the best discographies in Hip-Hop. Definitely deserves a spot as one of the best MCs to ever pick up a mic.
I saw the lyric breakdown on Accordion and I realized that this guy was a Lyricist! When I listened to the whole album, I had to stop and sit down to truly understand the greatest I was listening to. This is every MC'S instructor when it comes to flow patterns and literary devices. Just an amazing album that is the epidime of lyricism. That's why I think it is a classic.
Best hiphop album off all time, finally! I get where Feefo is coming from, but this is an album that gets better everytime you hear up to the 100th and 200th play, the replayability is amazing.
My favourite thing is when people who love madvillainy get together and appreciate the amazing moments of the album. For example the starting line of accordion, so thoughtful.
He gotta stop with his cop-out, "I didn't grow up with it, so I can't connect". It's such BS. People younger than him will tell you many of the classic albums they've reviewed are classics.
Living off borrowed time the clock tick faster. Dick Dastardly and Muttly with sick laughter. A sun to a knife fight and they came to cut the mix master. -MF Doom
The instrumental for great day is one of the most creatively sampled hip hop beats I’ve ever heard. I listened to it when I tripped acid once and it blew my fucking mind because I heard it so differently
To be honest that first Viktor Vaughn Album is my favorite out of all his albums and like all his joints but that Viktor Vaughn album was just dark, gritty, and extra funky.
I mean listen to him. Using terms like "Bumps in the whip" constantly should tell you where his priorities are when it comes to music. He wants something to vibe or shake his head to. MF Doom and such aren't really bump in the whip music, it's more for heavy hip hop fans who can actually appreciate every aspect of it from production, lyrics, flows, etc.
I don't know if it was already said, but another thing I wish was spoken more on why this is ultimately a classic is that in this day there are such a significant amount of known rappers and producers that are easily heavily influenced by doom and madlib as a result of this project (Joey badass, Tyler the Creator, mos def, Earl sweatshirt, knxwledge, kanye west and so on etc..) the effects of this project really set in place a spot for music like this to begin to be more widely accepted based on who it ultimately influenced in mainstream and underground in my opinion
This album needs to be brought up with every "what is a classic" discussion. It didn't change the sound the hip hop for the next 6 years, yet the style of madlib and MF DOOM's flow influenced rappers of the next generation.
Living in South Africa, when this album dropped at that time, if you were an underground hip hop fan and you didn’t have this album, it was like walking around with no underwear 🩲😅🤷🏾♂️. EVERYBODY had this album. It’s really interesting to come across people like Feefo, y’all really missed out! This album is too personal, for a lot of us#RIPDOOM
I got into hip-hop with J.cole and Kendrick. I first listened to MF DOOM last year and i will bump his shit in the car all the time, i feel like his shit like Rapp Snitch Knishes, Doomsday, All caps, Rhymes like Dimes bumps in the car heavy.
This album took me a half a dozen listens for it to fully click for me, but when it did I was in awe of the absolute mastery of the craft by both Madlib and DOOM
Dr. Octageonceologyst, Deltron 3030, and God Loves Ugly should be on the list for classics down the line... Maybe The Unseen if we want to see more of the underground classics be reviewed.
What a gem of an album man, it's still one of the genres most creative and abstract albums. This review seems timely as well since the world heard the news about DOOM'S son. So R.I.P. to the young king and much love to DOOM and his family. I can't imagine losing your brother let alone your own seed.
I'm a patron so I have seen this video before but seeing it again after the passing of the GOD MF DOOM. It brings chills thanks for letting the public see this. RIP MF DOOM
Listening to this review brings you back to those days. So many memories of how we reacted to this album at the time. Not to mention Geedorah, Vik, MM & Dangerdoom, legendary run by DOOM.
The crazy thing to me about the album getting leaked is that Rhinestone Cowboy references it. It’s the coolest thing ever: “Goony goo goo loony koo-koo like Gary Gnu of New Zoo Review But who knew **the mask had a loose screw?** Hell, could hardly tell Had to **tighten it up** Like the Drells and Archie Bell It speaks well of the hyper bass **Wasn't even tweaked and it leaked into cyberspace** Couldn't wait for the snipes to place At least a track list in bold print typeface” This thing was BORN to be a classic!!!!
This album was my favorite album I listened to in 2016. I tried to listen to a bunch of what people define as classics last year, and Kate Bush's hounds of love and This were the two best. MADVILLIANY is my favorite classic I've heard yet.
I work at an Applebee’s, and I finally gave up just listening to this by myself on my headphones, so I put it on in the restaurant on the speakerand it caught the attention of the gm (a 60+ year old) quite of a few times with passing lyrics and 4 people asked who it was so they could look him up.... good day
Listening to this, I’d call this the Hip-Hop manual: this is how you produce, and this is how you rap. . To me, that’s what make it a classic and what sets it apart from the other albums. . .
This album will never get old. The late great MF DOOM(RIP) and Madlib came together at the right time. I hope they release the follow up but it looks like it’s not going to happen. I hope there are some new Special Herbs albums to.
I want to thank ya for putting this out for the public. It's dope to see how excited ya get when talking about his verses and the songs from this iconic album. Thanks again
Being an Atlanta native I can really appreciate this review. I remember buying Mm Food off of hearing Deep Fried Friends randomly on a message where people were putting people on to stuff. When I went to buy it I saw the Madvillian cover and I immediately was intrigued being a huge Dr Doom fan. After buying Mm Food I turned right background and bought Madvillian and never turned back. The Dr Doom correlation (Ghostface/Ironman being ultra dope already), the beats, lyrics and delivery, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn. It filled a void when i was growing out of commercial music. I had to have everything he had out. I'll say this, every friend I put Doom on to liked it. It's like it catered to a side of your musical taste that you didn't know you had. Doom isn't the only one to do this, but is the only one to do it how he mastered it. Perfectly imperfect.
#PatreonSquad That Nas "I Am" drum loop at the beginning lol. Madvillainy is probably top 3 albums of all time, any genre for me. So creative, so ahead of its time, so esoteric and dope. Truly a high water hip-hop mark. Thanks for this review y'all.
A lot of people say it u didn't here this at that time you can't appreciate it. I'm 17 and I first listened to it last year and I love it. The production and the way DOOM rhymes is just incredible.

One thing I love about Madvillainy is that there aren't really any choruses. Doom just spits for like 2-3 minutes and then you're on the next song
That’s exactly why I love it. It defies every expectation.
The way Rap music is supposed to BE! Spitting knowledge without commercials 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
@@creative_soul-recolo there's nothing wrong with Choruses in rap.
@@mamba4817 when done right, they are useful to the song. Otherwise, they just end up hampering the music
It reminds me of a great punk rock album. Like Minutemen Double Nickel on the Dime. Just all goods, no fat, no messing around.
it's always dope as hell seeing beezy get hype over an album
I pledged today just because I knew when I saw the thumbnail for this video we were gonna get a hype Beezy.
The only competition Madvillain had in 04 were The College Dropout and Mm Food
DOOM's only competition is himself pretty much.
